The part of the armor that protects the upper thighs are called tassets, they're generally attached to the faulds, which are a more flexible piece attached to the bottom of a breastplate to protect the hips, usually made from a series of overlapping horizontal plates. The tassets on Lydia are obvious a little exaggerated, as they should be in a cool fantasy setting!
