The Chess Set is finally here and I'm pretty stoked about it! This is absolutely the biggest project I have done to date but I think it has all been worth it. Now go grab your reading glasses because we're about to get into it!
The entire collection of files can be printed without supports which was one of my main goals for this set, as well as make it as customizable as possible. I wanted it to be as easy as possible to get a good looking group of models regardless of your printer specs or what you wanted to use for your individual pieces. Now for a bit of a breakdown of what it is you have available to you.
First up we can start with the board itself and specifically the outside trim. It has been broken up into 9 sections that all fit nicely together with the added inset parts. I printed mine at a 0.2 layer height so that I could get some decent detail out of the ornamental designs but it not take too long for each piece.
Next up you have the inside of the board and that has been broken up into 3 parts, Corners, Inside, and Side. I printed these at a 0.3 layer height since detail wasn't a concern. Next we have the Trim pieces for some extra splash of colour around the tiles and these were printed at 0.3. Finally we come to the tiles of which you will need 32 of two different colours. I have included a text file that outlines instructions on how you can print the Marble version that I printed or you can use the blank version if that's more your style. There is an exploded view of the board in the above pictures to give you a better understanding on how it all fits together but you shouldn't have too much trouble.
Next up are the pieces! Like I mentioned before you can customize how you build your set and which pieces you want to use for the King, Queen, and so on. You have a folder of "Base Pieces" that contains all of the bottoms to the pieces and come in either a Regular or Damaged version.
Once you have your bottoms printed you will need to figure out what you want to put in them and you have 30 different Pokemon to choose from. The main groupings are a Water set and a Fire set that you can see I built my set around and then another folder with all of the others. I would suggest printing these at a small layer height to get the most detail out of these as possible.
There are inset points on both the bottom parts and tops to help align the top to the bottom but just as a note from my own experience, I ended up snipping the bumps out of the bottom part as resin can have shrinkage after curing and they were causing some issues. When printed in FDM the parts lined up perfectly.
I'm pretty sure that about covers it but if anything comes up feel free to comment here or post in the Discord or Facebook groups. I really hope you all enjoy this one and I can't wait to see how you design your own collection!
Thanks as always everyone.
