Personally I'm of the opinion that Ging is a horrible father. The one good decision that he made as a parent to Gon was leaving him with Mito. Sooner or later he must've known that Gon would want to reach out to him but he never dropped in to the island for a visit in between assignments or even just left a contact number in case either of them wanted to talk to him. Nope the only way for Gon to meet Ging was to take a rigorous exam that was famous for leaving those who failed it either mentally broken, physically crippled or dead. Then there was learning Nen which was also extremely dangerous and a requirement to play greed island, which Ging deliberately set up a convicted murderer/nen master to be the boss Gon had to defeat without holding back at all. Even after all that he still pulled a "gotcha" and sent him someplace else cuz he beat the game in a way he didn't want. Sorry but all that sounds like a guy who does NOT want to be found.
