The Time Machine (1960) Full Length Reaction

Another super cool classic sci-fi! You guys know I love time travel so this was, of course, right up my alley. I'm still thinking about which 3 things I would take to the future with me.... what about you?

The Time Machine (1960) Full Length Reaction

Comments

Great reactions, Jen! This is one of my very favorite movies. Very few reactors react to it, but even so, I come back to it a couple of times a year, so it’s always a great time when someone choses to react to it. I first saw it when I was 7 years old (in 1962). A local Boys Club somehow had gotten a 12 mm print and showed it on a movie night. I was most impacted by the movie’s depiction of the atomic war in 1966. Probably because of the Cuban Missile Crisis and all the civilian drills and preparations surrounding it. There was just something about the lava / magma coming up from the ground that fueled my uneasiness. The scene that most made me squirm was when he was going forward and the dead Morlock was decomposing. Watching it tonight, I just made a connection between this movie and “Logan’s Run” (1976). Everybody was young. After reaching a certain age, the older people were killed. Mostly blonde people (although there were some redhead and black-haired people in “Logan’s Run”), mostly Caucasians (no people of color), people were clothed in primarily three colors (green, reds / pinks, yellows). Maybe the makers of “Logan’s Run” “borrowed” some of the visual style of “The Time Machine”? An interesting spoiler about another movie Rod Taylor (“George”) starred in. In the movie, “World Without End” (1956), in the far-flung future, the human race bifurcated into those living above ground and those living below ground. Although in that one, the humans below ground were technologically, socially, and physically normal, while those who lived on the surface mutated into animalistic, tribal, physically grotesque beings. I hope you choose to do more "oldies" movies. There's a veritable treasure trove of 50s, 60s and 70s Science Fiction (and just overall Drama) to delve into.

For those of you who like older movies like this, I added "The Thief of Bagdad" (1940) to Jen's Patreon Movie Requests page. https://www.jenmurrayxo.com/ Give it a like! I'm sure Jen would love it.

I liked "Night of the Hunter" quite a bit when I saw it as a kid. Not that I'm THAT old or anything, I saw it on TV as a kid. Technically, I'd call these "classics" and not so much "obscure" because they are famous movies, they've just been out for a long time so they're not in heavy rotation and they're classics because they stand the test of time pretty well.

Thadman

Buckaroo Banzai is definitely one I'd pick out of this lot to watch again with Jen's reaction. Time Bandits is also a classic fun one!

Over50Gamer

Oh JHFC 🤣

Over50Gamer

I'd never seen this before and I really liked it. Thanks for watching more obscure movies. The fifties is a little bit of a blind spot for me when it comes to cinema; only recently have I began watching all the classics from that era. One I really loved is called "Night of the Hunter", which is nothing like this movie at all, but I'd highly recommend it if you want something more dramatic.

Noremac

There are so many Weena innuendos here, because I have the sense of humor of a 13 year old boy.

Mastervodo

Please, please watch "the day the earth stood still" Please

Anton Hagelmeier

Upon finishing my watch, I think I was too harsh the first time I saw it. I enjoyed this version alot more than before.

Kristin D

When I heard the name Eloi, it occurred to me where else I've heard that name. There was a Prog Rock band from Germany called Eloy. Their biography says they took it from The Time Machine, but altered the spelling. I have their 6h album, "Ocean", which is very cool.

The plaque on the time machine console reads “Manufactured by H. George Wells”. Nice addition! Great reaction to a past favorite! I remember seeing this in my youth after I had read the book years before as a teenager. Hadn’t seen it in years, so this brought back memories of when my friends and I used to get together and watch VHS copies of early sci-fi movies. Good times! 😃 More movies similar to this one, some related by time travel, some not so much: * Somewhere in Time (1980) * Time After Time (1979) * Time Bandits (1981) * First Men in the Moon (1964) * Journey to the Center of the Earth (1959) * The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension (1984) * Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow (2004) Then of course there’s always the remake: * The Time Machine (2002) - not as close to the novel as this (not that this is either), but a good story nonetheless.

youre just too earnest i have no clue when you are 'lying'

Great watch along, it's one of my favourite, and I always liked to watch at Christmas time. A fun little fact that always made me smile, one of the four gentlemen was played by Whit Bissell who 6 years after thus movie went on to become a regular member of the Cult tv show The Time Tunnel.

RebRox65

I forgot when the movie was filmed and I was trying to figure out what historical events tied to the nuclear sirens. Initially, I thought it was just a test and then BOOM. Finally I remembered the movie was filmed before that 60s date so it was the future. Derp.

TigerMyth

I love that the movie pushes us to ask a different question in each act: * Is time travel really possible? * Can we stop from killing ourselves? * Eloi or Morlock, which would you rather be? The first is philosophical, the second cultural, and the third is deeply personal, but all with equally profound repercussions. Also the movie took some shortcuts from the book, where he spent several months teaching the Eloi some basic language & writing skills. But I think there's still never been a better portrayal of time travel than watching it all play out in front of you from the comforts of a Victorian chair.

Dan Halstead

I agree about Time After Time. Jen should watch it...and this is one of my favorite movies ever. 😁

This was my favorite classic sci-fi movie of all time when growing up and still love it. But, I do love time travel stories, but I also love old sci-fi and fantasy stories from two centuries ago (Jules Verne, H. G. Wells, Edgar Rice Burroughs, etc.) I have such admiration for those types of stories. I don't know what three books I'd take because 1. I'm not a scientist and therefore I'd be less knowledgeable as to what I SHOULD take 2. I don't read a lot of books as it is and definitely no non-fiction, so my potential mental library is painfully small. It's more like 2 bookshelves populated solely with fiction (mostly horror).😅 I wish I was more well-read. Wish that I got the reading bug instilled in me as a kid.

Thadman

Ya I understand that

Jen M

I'd never seen this before, and haven't read the book. A lot to like about the movie, but one thing bothers me quite a bit and I imagine the book does a better job... How is it that the Morlocks appear to be little more than primal animals on screen, yet they have the capability to raise HUMANS as "cattle". They can manufacture textiles and clothing. And the clothes they make the Eloi are much nicer than the clothes they make for themselves to wear??? Plus, they cultivate fantastic looking produce, and yet do not eat it themselves. They set the dining tables perfectly, clean of dirt and dust. The narrative suggests these are sophisticated beings throughout the film. That is in stark contrast to how they are portrayed once revealed. It left me thinking to myself, how could these beings have orchestrated this world? Make it make sense.

Jeremy

That was really good. like you Jen I thought the music was great 🔥 3 books the lord of the rings trilogy in one book format , the hitchhikers guide to the galaxy and a storm of swords . As I say I really enjoyed this reaction but personally I prefer the remake from 2002 , both are enjoyable though and yet have differences In parts of the story . Anyways suns out I'm going to go plant some seeds 😀 cheers Jen

Ian

i would love to watch your reaction to, To Sir With Love, 1967. a schoolteacher in a tough school in England.

Another great watch along, of one of my favorite movies ever. I love Russell Garcia's score, it's one of the first CDs I bought back when CDs were still a new thing. Visual effects were by Gene Warren and Wah Chang. Warren did miniature effects for several films and TV shows, and his son did effects for the first two Terminator films. Chang built several props for Star Trek TOS, he designed and built the communicators and tricorders, and the Gorn suit. David Filby is played by Alan Young, best known as Wilbur from the TV show Mister Ed. Now you have to see Time After Time, a mash up of Wells and another figure from history.

Rob Nichols

I think you aren't grasping that he too is traveling through time. There isn't a duplicate George continuing to live his life. He disappeared on the night he is going through time. His friend probably kept the house in order for him to come back but eventually, they decided he was gone for good. It isn't when he died. It is just when they stopped paying for his house to be cleaned and powered. He essentially created a future timeline where he disappeared the night of the test.

TigerMyth

I've always been very impressed with David Duncan's screenplay for this movie. While it hits many of the "beats" from H.G. Wells' book, it weaves a different and very interesting story around the original storyline. The book was written around 1900, so had none of the bits about WWI and WWII. And believed that the lasting invention from the era was to be matches, which is why they figure so prominently in the story. This is one of my all-time favorite movies from the early 1960s. And also throwing in my vote for Journey to the Center of the Earth, also from this era.

Stevtrek

Jen! I love that you've gotten me to watch this movie again. I haven't seen it since... I don't know when, but I must've been in my pre-teens. Now that I'm in my 50's, I can appreciate what might be the message in this story. Summarily, in his journeys through the near future (and then in the records of the rings) he mostly sees war and humankind on the edge of destroying itself. Far off into the future, he sees humankind evolving (devolving) into two subspecies. The Eloi who is soft, unknowedgeable and docile, and the Morlocks who are savage, but only work to raise the Eloi for meat and don't have much reason to fight or make any progress in themselves. So, we see that humans, while our wars are self-destructive, ironically progress in knowledge and defense through our struggles. The Eloi had to learn to fight only when it's necessary for their survival, hence one of the Eloi realizing this and fighting back to help save George. I don't know if I'm making sense or if I'm really far off base; there's a number of other messages I can see in it. EDIT: thinking about the Eloi more, they lost a crucial component: empathy. Empathy gives us the incentive to care and, if necessary, fight for each other. Back to my love of time travel / alternate reality stories, i think that's why I love Doctor Who so much. (Another one of the shows I grew up with)

Over50Gamer

I can watch and enjoy the remake, but this version is leaps and bounds better. And the age of the film never feels weird to me. It all feels right.

Vwlss Nvwls

Obviously not 😂 Twas just a joke

Jen M

jen i hope you are not actually wondering if britain got nuked and consumed by lava

rubberkidney

yea the time travel effect was awesome

rubberkidney

I've waited years for this one, watching as soon as it's finished in the editor (I like to combine these with the movie to play as one file.)

Rob Nichols

The reimaging of this from 2002 is good too. The Music is beautiful, the story is a little different.

Kristin D

I'm so glad to hear this! My husband and I really enjoy the remake, I think Jen would too. I like the motivation for the time travel better in the newer version. Plus Simon Wells, Wells' great-grandson, used bits and pieces from early writings, things that Wells didn't decide to put into the published story.

Kristin D

Time Bandits 1981 is a great time travel film I'd highly recommend 🕛🕙🕘🕗🕕

Matt

i really like the newer version of this too, also there is a great radio play out there

rubberkidney

'THE WAR OF THE WORLDS' 1953...More of H.G.Wells and ground breaking effects,Spielberg and Lucas got inspired by these vintage sci-fi movies 🎬 Cool facts:The Eloi met for dinner in what was once the 'Emerald City' set from 'The Wizard of Oz'.....

Celeste McAllister🇨🇱

This is going to be a GREAT time! You would like the remake too I think. And Journey to the Center of the Earth from the 1960's. What's strange, speaking of the score, yes I jumped ahead a little, is that my local record store has two almost mint copies of the soundtrack on vinyl right now.

Geoff S.

Really looking forward to watching this tomorrow 🙂 time travel and Jen is always a winning combination 🔥 very stylish thumbnail this one I love it

Ian

Jen + Time Travel movies = An epic reaction 🔥
