My wife of 17 years died without warning 6 days ago, your Star Trek content is one of the few things bringing me any joy at the moment.
Thank you for that.

It's not parisitism; it's symbiosis. The symbiont is losing as much of its autonomy as you are. You influence it as much as it influences you.

It might create a diplomatic incident, considering how many times they say that General Tandro is a martyr to the current government. It's hard to say how many people his son actually represents who want to see his killer punished.
But you're right: what the hell does Bajor care about justice for some allies of the Cardassians? It's a good point.

This could've been such a tedious episode, but the Bajoran judge's sassiness and your constant quips about her taking naps during each break really made it entertaining. Thank you Jen! :D

Ah yes thanks, she played the assistant, not the judge. Very memorable lady though!

But why allow the extradition? Bajor's only real concern here is whether Dax is a danger to Bajoran society (e.g. a secret murderer waiting to strike again) - assuming they don't think she is a threat, they might as well not allow the extradition. The foreign policy implications should be minor for them, the Klaestron are not exactly their friends, and really this is just one guy with a vendetta, not something the Klaestron government would create a diplomatic incident over.

I agree about the music - I don't think it is militaristic, I'd instead describe it as majestic, regal, and wondrous.

I didn't realize it til today that the guy that plays Quark is also the principal on Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

Not a fan of this Trill business. You're sticking a big nasty worm in your gut and surrendering your autonomy. Who the hell would want that?

Not a spoiler, but the opening credits change, too. Just like in TNG where the first few seasons had the Enterprise near Saturn, that later evolved to a more exotic ringed planet. DS9 gets a spiffy uograde, too.
One thing that changes in the credits is the name of the actor playing Dr. Julian Bashir. He has used a variety of stage names in his career. Did you know he was the nephew of Malcolm McDowell - star of A Clockwork Orange AND the Star Trek: Generations movie???

Good point. Yet, could refer to other jurisdictions as non-binding but informative.

The biggest issues legally was this was being held in a Bajoran Court and they have never dealt with this before. I mean hell, they're still in tribunal mode recovering from the Occupation. They just didn't have the precidents to help inform them.

Typical lifespan for a Trill Symbiont is measured by centuries. Dax's current age of 300 is young/just middle aged IIRC.

I can understand that. And it's a pretty subtle reveal. 🙂

I'm also unsure how long a Symbiont lives, it may be mentioned at some point. I know eventually they desire to return to the spawning pools to procreate, so perhaps that's when they finally die. Regardless, they'd live for many hundreds of years - maybe a dozen lifetimes?

The Symbiont's brainwaves would certainly change between hosts - as they are the ones who store the memories of previous hosts to share them with the current host. Every new host changes the symbiont as much as the host is changed by the symbiont. Its why the symbionts want to be joined - to learn and experience the world in a way they never could in their latent form.

I wasn't sure I got it right. Sometimes I don't say things out loud if I'm not 100% sure if I'm right. I've been insulted too many times.

Such a good episode. It reminds me of "Measure of a man" in TNG. Anyone who disses the first or second season of a trek show seems to undervalue the foundational work they lay for the more "exciting" stuff later on.

I didn't really remember this episode but had a feel for it. I agree would think there would be more legal precedent out there in how to deal with this situation. I also thought it was striking the description of Jadzia as young independent woman earning those degrees and contributing to society BEFORE she became Jadzia Dax. Yet, legally or morally (and in which jurisdictions), what assumption of risk did Jadzia assume when becoming Jadzia Dax?
I like the intro music. Majestic. Love the brass.

The theme ... for me ... isn't about attention, it's about coming home to DS9 after being away for too long.

Yes, the Theme Song will change at season 4. And if you don't want to get spoilered close your eyes during the theme Song in Season 4 Episode 1. But that's the future. Enjoy the first seasons of DS9.

Good episode! Honestly, I barely remembered what happened in this DS9 episode with Jadzia Dax, so I'm glad I got to revisit it along with your reaction. There are definitely some episodes that are a bit fuzzy for me, but plenty that I remember really well.
I haven't rewatched TOS, TAS, DS9, Voyager, or Enterprise nearly as many times as I've watched TNG all the way through. As for the newer Star Trek shows—Discovery, Picard, Lower Decks, Prodigy, and Strange New Worlds (which is on its third season now and premieres this summer—I cannot wait!)—I've only watched them all the way through once so far. Well, except for a few episodes I've already rewatched, but I'll definitely be revisiting all of them again at some point. Lol.
Funny how two of the guest stars in this episode were also in TNG—totally forgot they showed up in DS9! And yeah, Curzon/Jadzia Dax has such an interesting backstory. I can't wait for you to learn more about the Trill and their homeworld in future episodes—you're in for some great stuff!

The theme is better on rewatches, this is an important episode since everyone works together to help a Starfleet officer

Excellent guest stars in this episode. I haven't seen Fionnula Flanagan in much other than How The West Was Won and The Others, but she's always good value.
But... did Jen miss that the identity of the traitor was revealed? I was expecting some kind of reaction. 😅

The judge played the wife Rishon in the season 3 episode of TNG Survivors. She wasn't as feisty then, just liked to serve tea lol.....I cracked up each time u mentioned the judge needing a nap LOL

Honestly, if the penalty wasn't death, it might be harder to justify preventing extradition. Other than general objections to the death penalty, it's only really objectionable because Jadzia would have to be killed to kill the Dax symbiont. The same is true of any punishment, but if the Klaestron courts were inclined to finding an appropriate punishment for a Trill inside a new host, it'd be a lot less dire to allow her to go stand trial.
Also, while it would have been useful to know what the Trill do in this situation, this hearing was operating under Bajoran law, so the precedents from any other culture wouldn't apply. They would just be a point of interest, because presumably the Bajorans have their own answers to complex questions of personhood, even if they've never had them for Trill specifically.

One thing I always found odd about this episode that no one ever bothered to ask the Trill how this would be handled on their home world. Surely something like this has happened before among Trill, and there is research and legislation for that. (Without getting into spoiler territory, the answer to this question can at least be inferred at a later point, but I think this early in the series the writers hadn't fully figured out how the joined Trill would work themselves, so they leave the question kinda unanswered for now.)

We do eventually learn about all the previous Dax hosts, but at this point, the only one mentioned by name is Curzon.

Yeah, she played Jim Carrey's assistant in Liar Liar. And she was in...Mrs. Doubtfire too. That lady had a hot streak in her career at that time, good on 'er! She was really good.

They will stand at attention but there is no salute, Starfleet has never had salutes as far as I can remember. I think that says a lot about the nature of Starfleet as being not specifically a military institution, but is an exploratory one at its core, but still having a hierarchical command structure

I always found this a very interesting episode, exploring the implications of the Trill beyond what was briefly covered in TNG. One thing I wonder if you missed here - the actual crime and who was responsible - Enina Tandro mentioned it very briefly to Dax at the end, it sounds like her husband was going to defect or something like that but the enemy killed him instead - and Enina and Dax agreed to cover up the truth. It's an interesting kind of anticlimax!
Something else I wondered - is that judge the same judge from Liar Liar? She looks very familiar!
