As Good As It Gets (1997) Full Length Reaction

Ok this movie is SO GOOD. Brilliantly written and acted! Definitely not a run-of-the-mill romantic comedy but it's so friggin charming. The characters are so flawed and complex but you're really rooting for them! I really loved this one!!

From Amazon (general trivia): "At the 1998 Oscar ceremony, when his name was announced as the winner of the Best Actor award, Jach Nicholson ascended to the podium by carefully stepping over the cracks between the tiles on the stage, in imitation of his character, Melvin Udall. Nicholson dedicated his Oscar to his A Few Good Men (1992) co-star J.T. Walsh who had died shortly before the Academy Awards in 1998. Hard not to like this movie. Nom for Best Picture Oscar. Oscars may not mean anything to many, but I think are on point here. You mentioned you liked the writing. Nom for Best Writing Oscar. Nicholson won Best Actor Oscar. Helen Hunt won Best Actress Oscar. I have been a fan of Helen Hunt since her Mad About You days. I like Greg Kinnear (nom for Best Supporting Actor Oscar). Oh yeah, Hans Zimmer nom for Best Music Oscar. Jack Nicholson is awesome in "Easy Rider" (1969).

One of my favorites. And so few reactors react to it. Such s shame. Thanks Jen

Jojo

A big +1 for Silver Linings Playbook (2012) (Jennifer Lawrence won Best Actress Oscar).

Clay F

Glad you liked this one Jen. A nice departure from the previous week. Favorite for me because everything and everyone is toned down from the Hollywood glitz. My other personal fave is "Dan in Real Life". Not Helen Hunt or Jack Nicholson, but a surprisingly engaging set with Steve Carell and wonderful supporting cast.

Mike Fox

I Loved this one. Can we add to the Dirty Harry Collection? πŸ₯Έ

Jeremy Vickers

I hope you can react to Anger Management (2003) a great comedy with Jack Nicholson and Adam Sandler (I added this one on the list)

Alexis Vorian

Yes, both Skeet Ulrich and Jamie Kennedy star in Scream πŸ˜„. Also, the Cafe 24 manager is played by Shane Black, who wrote Lethal Weapon among many others! Also, Jackie is played by Lisa Simpson herself, Yeardley Smith

Carlos Perez

Glad you enjoyed this one, Jen. it's been a favorite of mine since I saw it twice during it's theatrical run. Proof you can make a movie about life without a lot of extraneous stuff happening.

Telly Coolong

I forgot to say in my previous comment, did you recognise the actor / specialist doctor who Melvin sent? Harold Ramis from Ghostbusters and director of Groundhog Day, Analyse This, etc. R.I.P. Big guy. ❀️ Shout out for Analyze This (1999). It's very funny.. Mafia / psychiatry comedy.

Wonderful reaction , a very touching and heartfelt movie this one , that magnificent thumbnail speaks for itself 🐢πŸ₯° had never seen this until now and probably wouldn't have if you hadn't chose it Jen so thankyou once again for opening my eyes to another belter of a movie you always pick fantastic movies that's why you're so great πŸ”₯ cheers Jen πŸ™Œ

Ian

This is an absolute favourite of mine. Superb writing and performances across the board. Unconventional and hilariously complex.

Daryl

Two great suggestions!

Daryl

"Yes, I do know what you are saying since I can hear you." [snicker][snicker]

Andrew Roach

One of the best movies ever made

Scott

We're The Millers is excellent! Highly recommended. "Know what I'm sayin'?"

Jason Scade

Thank for reacting to one of my favourite movies. πŸ‡¦πŸ‡Ί

Byron

for me, one of nicholson's top 5 performances ever. you love to hate him and also feel with him. and helen hunt is one of my 90s crushes <3 great actress!

Alecco

One of my favorite movies. Good times, noodle salad.

Shawn C

Another great and different romance is Silver Linings Playbook. Also not related but another great movie I don't see anywhere is We're The Millers, a raunchy but heartfelt comedy that did really good at the box office and was popular "Know what I'm Say'n?"

Andrew Roach

My other favorite comedic line to the bartender "No offense, but a moron pushing the last legal drug."

Andrew Roach

I wasn't going to watch this and then I thought, I absolutely need to see her reaction to Verdell. He' s a good boy. lol. Great reaction.

TigerMyth

I wonder how they liked them apples. (Def fair win though)

Jason Scade

Very happy that you enjoyed this movie! I love watching people react to the character of Melvin Udall, especially knowing what's coming. The "you make me want to be a better man" always gets me. I think it will come as no surprise to know that Jack Nicholson & Helen Hunt won Best Actor/Actress respectively for their performances. It was nominated for Best Writing but lost out to Good Will Hunting (which I think is fair).

Alexis

That was as good as it gets, Jen. Wonderful job! πŸ’œπŸ˜‚ 🐢 I'm so happy you loved it. This is probably my fave rom-com, it's perfectly structured, it's so offbeat and I find it very touching, it makes me cry and laugh at the same time. Also it's hugely rewatchable (it actually gets better on repeats). What a difference in performances of character Jack gives in this vs The Shining. Helen Hunt is beautiful. β™₯ 17:48 She dodged a bullet. 27:45 Poor dog, running about terrified in the monster's apartment. 27:15 "Maybe the dog can teach him to love." Fab call, Jen. 51:40 Never noticed before that was Julie Benz. 😍 1:00:50 "Well lucky you, you're here for rock bottom. You absolute horror of a human being." Phew, scathing (and deserved). 1:16:42 "Last word freak." Jack calls the art dealer, making Jack the last word freak. πŸ˜… 1:23:50 Simon explaning about his assault and "I almost died." and Jack butts in (unaware of the conversation's nature) with "Let's finish the small talk in the car." πŸ™„πŸ˜… 1:25:10 Jack's road tape starts with Y.M.C.A. blasting. πŸ˜… 1:29:00 Simon's story re his parent's estrangement is brutal. :( As was the attack on him. But it's wonderful that something good comes from it. 1:57:00 Simon-- "Thank you, Melvin. You overwhelm me. I love you." Melvin-- "I tell you, buddy. I'd be the luckiest guy alive if that did it for me." :') β™₯ He makes progress. 2:11:00 What a compliment. 2:12:59 Jen-- "He walked on the cracks!" Love heals. On promo posters for As Good as It Gets the image of Jack holding up Verdell is similar to some of the promo posters for One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest, where Jack tries to lift the very heavy marble drinking fountain. I've often wondered if this was done on purpose. About Schmidt (2002) Jack Nicholson / dramady / touching character study. Matchstick Men (2002 / crime / dramady) Nic Cage plays a deeply flawed professional conman with bad OCD, brought on by his dreadful lifestyle choices. Dir by Ridley Scott. Touching. About Time (2013) Offbeat rom-com involves time travel. Very quirky and British, touching. What Women Want (2000) Helen Hunt, Mel Gibson / rom-com. Ya, a great movie done suberbly. But it's a movie I never want to see again. Too tragic and too close to home. Sad really. Love the puppy.

edgecenter

β€œSell crazy someplace else. We're all stocked up here.” one of my favorite lines delivered ever.
