🖖Star Trek DS9 S01E06 Full Length Reaction

S01E06 Captive Pursuit

I'm gonna give DS9 the win this week as I really enjoyed this ep centered on O'Brien (who I have officially given a nickname!) and his great ability to make friends with anyone! So cool to see him getting more screen time! Make it so! 🖖

🖖Star Trek DS9 S01E06 Full Length Reaction

Comments

You're starting to have fun with DS9, it's most evident in this episode. And it gets better, better than TNG in some ways.

Rob Nichols

The reason DS9's theme is somber and melancholy is because DS9, the station, is a former Cardassian gulag in which Bajoran slaves died by the hundreds processing the ore that the Cardassians stole from their planet.

Nicholas Webb

Play a flute, and was in marching band. We won state every year from 1977 to 1980. I soooo love DS9s song.

Manny

Sounds beautiful

Anthony Picard

There is a steady tempo in the season 1 theme song, it’s just not an audible beat. You are correct that rubato means flexible tempo

Anthony Picard

That’s a GREAT short film!

Anthony Picard

The theme song for Star Trek: Deep Space Nine (DS9) is meant to convey the show's tone, which is majestic, somber, and unhurried. The theme's tone reflects the station's "station"ary nature, as opposed to the more upbeat tone of Star Trek: The Next Generation.

Just another Red Shirt

This was one of my favorites of these early season 1 episodes. Still wasn't quite sure where we were going with the series, but focusing on O'Brien was nice after TNG. Plus it starts giving us a closer look at Quark and Odo. And believe it or not, Quark turns out to be a great character. Maybe my favorite on the series, as he gets more depth in the future, but stays a Ferengi. DS9 makes the species work better than TNG ever did.

Joe Concepts

I think maybe that should be your thing for this particular theme song -- instead of singing along (which was fun in TNG), change it up for this one and stand at attention and salute or something 😂😂

Matt F

imo, it's a slow burn, but I learned to sing along eventually (maybe I sing it like, meow meow meow meow, meeeoww meowmeowmeow) or sometimes I whistle 🤣 it's very complex and mournful, but ascendant-- rising from the ashes, imo

Loki Incredible

The woman that plays the newly hired and harassed dabo girl Sarda, is the older sister of Jamie Lee Curtis. JLC having VERY recently been cast in a very small Trek role herself, 25 years later. Thank Michelle Yeoh, I think 🤔

Loki Incredible

I think the theme will probably grow on you as you become more attached to the characters.

Noel

This episode reminds me why I love sisko. That stare down was so good.

Kevin Morris

Jon, Don't worry, just count to four. Then three more.

Paul Sophocleous

I absolutely love DS9's theme. But nothing tops TNG's theme (or The Motion Picture's, since it's basically the same theme). That music is Star Trek for me, the way it feels so iconic, epic and optimistic. Honestly, though, I adore every Star Trek theme, from TOS to Strange New Worlds, even Enterprise's. Yeah, I know many fans hate on that one, but not me. It's different, sure, but it hits me in a way that just works. You've still got a bit of a journey before you get to Enterprise, though. And I love when you hum TNG's theme! Again it's so iconic. I'm sure you'll be able to hum DS9's too once it really grows on you. For now, no pressure. I really can't wait for you to hear Enterprise's theme; I'm curious how you'll feel about it even Voyager's. This DS9 episode is such a good one from season one, especially with Chief O'Brien. To be honest, I'd forgotten most of it until revisiting it with your reaction. It's been a while since I did a full DS9 watch-through. And about the Prime Directive—sometimes I'm all for it, other times I don't agree with it. In this episode, I completely understood O'Brien's choice to help Tosk, even if it bent the rules and got him into trouble with Sisko. It's just so him. Oh, and I loved that scene with O'Brien and Quark. Lol

The Star Treker (aka Michael)

Jen's reactions to Odo remind me of Lucille Bluth's reactions to Gene Parmesan. :)

Justin Bartlett

The theme is strange, but very beautiful when you learn it. For the first few seasons, there isn't a consistent tempo (I think that's called rubato?) through a lot of it that you can tap your foot to which maybe leads to you having a hard time picking it up. In later seasons, they add a bit of drums, and it's easier to follow. It'll get in your blood soon enough, no worries.

Damon Corrigan

Thanks, barkeep!

Jack O

I actually don’t think that episode is that bad. It has a good premise and concept. Yeah the song is annoying but it’s nowhere near worst

Phil Ken Sebben

Unfortunately, we have my most hated episode coming up. I declared I'd never watch it again. We'll see if I break that vow for Jen. It will come along soon.

Jon Hoover

The actor who plays Tosk, Scott MacDonald, appears several more times throughout Trek. He appears later in DS9 as another character, he pops up in Voyager, and he plays a major role in Enterprise season 3.

Paul Sophocleous

I haven’t seen anyone comment this, but the DS9 theme sounds similar to Aaron Copland’s Fanfare for the Common Man.

Kirk Schwenckman

Yeah, the DS9 theme is more of a mood and atmosphere. It doesn't have a catchy melody like TNG.

Joe Blankenship

I'm with you on giving DS9 the win this week. A strong season 1 episode with O'Brien getting the spotlight.

Zapp Rowsdower

I wonder if there’s beer on the Sun

Phil Ken Sebben

The opening theme kind of remind me of Under Siege 2's opening theme. It definitely has a military motif.

Carlos Perez

Also, the horn give me a military drama vibe, which fits with the history of Bajor fighting off the Cardassians, and the Federation getting involved.

Zapp Rowsdower

I like the sound of that 🖖

Ian

I did a quick Google search to see if anybody made one of those. Unfortunately, no, but I did find Search for Spock. I want to get one. So funny

Zapp Rowsdower

some of my favorite DS9 episodes are O'Brien episodes, whispers & Hard Time come to mind. In the Pale Moonlight is probably my favorite episode although not an O'Brien episode.

Brian Sartini

Nevermind where's Wally or Waldo depending where you're from instead now we have where's odo 😀

Ian

Welcome 🖖 you need not worry Jen had said previously if she needs to take a break from trek she would but I think having a mix of two shows at the same time will keep things fresh for her , Jen's a smart cookie 👍

Ian

haha Odo 4, Jen 0. lets see when you spot him first before he changes! also, what you call "sad" and "melancholic", for me is more "calm greatness" or "calm heroic"? cant describe it better. in my brain, I always picture sisko looking at his crew and the station and see the friendship and the "heroic deeds" they had together. and how much the station changed in the end. but ofc thats coming from someone who watched this show when it aired and like a dozen times more. everyone new to it simply doesnt have that connection yet, but I am sure you will in the end!

Alecco

This really is one of the most standout episodes of season one it’s a pretty good one. As far as the theme song goes, it really portrays the loneliness and the isolation of being as far away from the rest of the Federation as they are.

Phil Ken Sebben

Hegets much more depth, though, in DS9…as does someone else come season 4

Michael Tuffin

I just joined your Patreon this week for the DS9 content, since it's by far my favorite "Star Trek". Excited to see all your thoughts about this show as it unfolds! That said: I do hope that if you ever find yourself not digging the series - or just needing a break - I hope you won't feel pressured to continue just for our sake. We're here to watch you enjoy stuff, so continue for as long as you're genuinely enjoying yourself!

James Douglas Burton

I like O'Brien. One of my favorite characters in TNG before he left.

Clay F

To me the DS9 theme has similarities to John Williams 1984 Olympics theme. You should check it out, Jen!

John DiGiantomasso

Quark's Bar is the Cheers of the Trek universe. A bar where everyone knows your name... one of the ongoing in gags of the series is the Character of Morn who's at the bar a lot. Morn rearranged is Norm! Like Norm Peterson in Cheers... They enjoy writing scenes where the maim characters are talking to Morn... but Morn never actually gets any lines in the show.

Just Paul!

to me the theme always reminds me of like a sun cresting over a mountain, then the camera panning over the various animals and plants in a valley greeting the morning. but i'm a bit of an odd ball.

William Rosmer

Omg, Ambassador O'Brien!!! :D I love it

Sarah

On the theme, I can see the melancholic, I don't think it's necessarily the thing I'd say immediately, contemplative or introspective is what I'd say - but the thing I hear above everything else is it sounds quite hopeful to me. I think you said in the pilot militaristic and there's definitely an undertone of that too. IIRC it does actually change, so it'll be interesting to see where you think it goes. One of the things that's interesting about the theme is the conspicuous lack of percussion.

Martin Nicholls

Its crazy that O'Brien started out as like a featured extra on TNG and then got fleshed out into a full character who we get to see tortured endlessly.

Ashley

Thanks, Jen. You don't know how I look forward to these!

Kevin Sommerfield

I like it! It just makes me want to listen, not sing!

Jen M

Don’t beat yourself up on the theme. To be fair, it’s more a slow fanfare than action theme like TNG or even TOS. For what it’s worth, it took me years to warm up to it. But now it’s easily hummable. You’ll get there too.

Julian San

Captive Pursuit is one of my favorite S1 episodes, along with Emissary, Dax, Vortex, Progress, Duet and the S1 finale In the Hands of the Prophets.

Tom Evans

Any O'Brien heavy episode is a good episode. And holy moly, there are some POWERFUL O'Brien (sorry, I mean "OB" hehe) episodes in DS9. Thanks Jen, can't wait for more!

Squeesher

I don’t think I’ve watched this episode in twenty years but WE ARE TOSK comes immediately back to me!

Ryan Fisher

Oh less go! Saturday viewing

Brett Whittaker

Normally I am all for the Saturday drops. But you have the most uncanny knack, J, for finding these random Friday uploads on the days my usual plans fall though. This couldn't have worked out better.

Preaching to the Horse's Mouth

OH-BRIEN! 😆
