S05E25 The Inner Light S05E26 Time's Arrow Part 1
Finally made it to the episode I've heard is in nearly everyone's Top TNG eps and I LOVED IT! It kinda broke my heart tho 😢 and I wonder what, if any, consequence it will have for Picard in the future. Then I saw Data's dismembered head for the 2nd time in what turned out to be kind of a Guinan episode as well! Looking forward to Part 2 next week when we start season 6! Engage! 🖖

Great reaction! I love Time's Arrow. I understand why The Inner Light is popular, but it's just not my type of thing personally.

Watching your reaction to TNG's The Inner Light just hit me—I never realized Kataan and its fate are so similar to Superman's home world Krypton's, before he was sent to Earth! I've seen this episode like a dozen of times, but that connection never hit me until now. Lol. It's not my absolute top favorite TNG episode (I enjoy Time's Arrow more), but it's still an incredible one—especially Picard playing the flute. I love Superman just as much as Star Trek, so the parallel makes me appreciate it even more.
I'm so glad you love this episode! I'm catching up on all your TNG reactions, and again I've been loving your takes on other movies and shows too—that's why I subscribed and joined your Patreon. I really hope you still dive into DS9 after TNG and of course tackle the TNG movies! I can't wait to see your reaction to the season 6 finale and a few other favorites from the 6th and 7th (final) season. Right now, I'm just about to watch your reaction to the season 5 finale! Lol.

The Inner Light is a top five episode for me and I consider it the most emotional TNG episode.
So Picard now joins Bill as a noted flute player...

I have to watch the other part yet (I've seen it, but a long time ago), but I believe the paradox in this one is the Bootstrap Paradox. It's a classic paradox that most time travel stories fall under, and it's easy to fall into.
To paraphrase another Trek character: if you're trying to make sense of time travel, I can only give this advice: Don't.

I like that some of the artifacts they find stay with the show. Picard still has the Mintakan tapestry in his quarters from Who Watches the Waters.

When Picard is served soup, Jen said that she likes soup and I just started laughing because an old joke from years ago was about how when you watch enough Star Trek, the one food you notice is common among EVERY alien civilization is SOUP 😂

"Seize the time... Live now. Make now always the most precious time. Now will never come again."
-–Kamin (Picard) in Star Trek: TNG "The Inner Light" (1992).
While I am not as infatuated with The Inner Light as some are, it is a top 15 episode for me. I don't feel bad for Picard. It's not sad for him to live that full life. Enriched Picard as a person. Had good experiences with his wife, kids, grandkids, and community friends. Learned to play the flute -- was special for him. A beauty of experiencing that full life is it only occupied 25 minutes of his present life -- Picard still has another full life (his actual life) to complete.
That was a cool tie-dye looking shirt that Picard (Kamin) was wearing early in the episode. I like your metaphor of the probe operating as a time capsule. You would think the technology of the planet couldn't do a simulation for Picard's experience. Whether Picard's experience was a simulation or real doesn't really matter. Can't get too logical with The Inner Light. After all, this is an alien species that can't travel off their planet or leave their star system, but somehow has the ability to scan the shields of the Enterprise and penetrate them.
As for Time’s Arrow 1, Samuel Clemens (pen name Mark Twain) has an annoying voice. Makes the episode less pleasant for me. Though I do like the episode.
Guinan is hundreds of years old and hadn't met any of the crew yet when she lived (existed) in the 19th century. I won't comment on any time paradoxes (if any).

Yeah, I think it was like a dream for Picard, but Kamin was a real person and it was his memories that were given to Picard. Picard not having any knowledge of these people and the memories being first person, his mind interpreted them as his own, so to him it feels like his own memories.

I think it was much like a dream. Time doesn't pass the same in dreams, so he could gain a lifetime of memories from a 25 minute dream state.
For me the final scene was an absolute masterpiece for two specific moments. When Riker hands Picard the box and Picard opens it, he glances up at Riker and Riker immediately understands and excuses himself. It's a small moment, but to me it says a lot about how well they know each other. No words needed.
Second, when Picard clutches the flute to his chest like it's the most precious thing in his life - and it may be. With that the enorimity of what has happened and that on some level is was REAL sinks in for both Picard and the audience.

The Inner Light episode is so good. Despite not having children in real life fate gifted him with a wonderful wife and wonderful children. This is truly a Picard episode.

Aren't these great? I have COVID brain, and watching you with star trek is wonderful to just relax and enjoy.
The Inner Light - Yeah, the questions you were asking are the same ones we ask ourselves. I always thought that after 30 years of being away from the Enterprise, what has he forgotten? I mean, I take a week of vacation, and I struggle remembering how to write code, let alone remember what I was working on. The settlers on Kataan (IYKYK) probably had some way to keep those memories intact - but they could do that and not relocate their people to another planet? Just weird, and lots of questions. But WOW! the feels on this one. Picard with wife, Picard with kids. Will he ever find love? If you lose love, was it really love? Is it better to have loved and lost than never to have loved at all? Yeah, great episode.
Time's Arrow, Pt 1 - Mystery!! Time Travel!! Data Dies!! :) All great stuff. I wont say much about this, and just wait for next weekend.
Thank you again, Jen!

I very much like The Inner Light but I am not infatuated as others can seem to be. I like that it's different. I like the concept of the historical aspect. I like the interesting heartwarming story with Picard. I like that the experience affects Picard as a person.
Brian and Lee make valid points. See very little of the crew. Also, the bulk of the episode is not contemporary. The duration in the current time is only like 25 minutes.
To me, episodes being contemporary and involving more than exclusively Picard (even though Picard is my favorite character) would be better candidates for No. 1 best episode of the entire series. It's a top 10 or top 15 episode for me.

The Inner Light makes me cry every time when he realises "It's me!" I think it is a powerful episode because it is Picard's chance to live a different kind of life that, as is hinted elsewhere in the franchise, he otherwise doesn't have time for. But as it is an emotional episode rather than a hard science fiction episode, it won't be to everybody's tastes.

That episode reminded me of Quantum Leap. Picard leaps into a body that's not his own, trying to set right what once went wrong. It would be pretty wild to fall asleep for 25 minutes, and wake up believing you'd lived 50 years of an entirely different life. Like when you wake up from a really vivid dream and it takes you a while to remember who and where you are.

Time Arrow Part 1. Good ep and great reaction, I'd forgotten most of it.
Btw, the character of the elderly white haired gentleman, Mr. Clemens, from the 19th Century is famed author Mark Twain.
23:15 Data's fab French accent. 😂
31:45 Data's dodgy acting when pretending picking up the anvil single-handedly "over exerted" him. 😂

In 1993, ‘The Inner Light’ won the prestigious Hugo Award for the best science fiction presentation. The three other Star Trek episodes to win this coveted award include Original Series episodes ‘The Menagerie,’ and ‘The City on the Edge of Forever’ and the TNG series finale ‘All Good Things.’

It wasn't the most boring, but just an ok episode to me. I understand what they were going for, but never understood how it was in so many top faves for so many people. If it was more of an illusion that his time on the Enterprise was a fever dream as Jen suggested would have been more interesting to me. I think he would have to go thru a lot of therapy to get back in to being JLP, but of course Troi wasn't in this one again lol.

I do not understand the love for The Inner Light. It is one of the most boring episodes ever. It is an episode with Picard living someone else's life and the other characters are barely even in it. Why do I want to see that? I do not get it.

Fun fact: The title "The Inner Light" was taken from the Beatles song of the same name. Mainly a George Harrison song with Indian musicians and some harmonizing vocals by Lennon and McCartney. The lyrics were inspired by the Tao text, "Tao Te-Ching": ""Without going out of my door, I can know all things on Earth. Without going out of my window, I can know the ways of heaven... Arrive without traveling, See all without looking, Do all without doing" - - - - - As for Time's Arrow, I don't think you recognized who the old man with the mustache was. Samuel Clemens, aka Mark Twain, famous author, whose most famous work was The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn.
