Lovely reaction, as usual. All of my published scholarship is in the field of constitutive rhetoric, which is to say, the language of persuasion. This episode fascinates me because there are at least *six* different varieties of rhetoric employed by various characters. It's a fantastic program to show students who are considering forms of argument. I once had a conversation with Melinda Snodgrass, the writer of this episode, who said that her original draft had contained an actual romance (maybe even a sexual relationship, I can't remember) between Data and the woman on the planet. She was always unhappy that that subplot was edited out.
