They tried to hard to make her like Bones instead of creating a character of her own. Even down to the hating the transporter and old country doctor comment. When she was written to challenge Picard she was on fire.

Is there anything more enjoyable than watching Jen bop to the TNG then. 🖖

New Patron here and I started on this episode to close the gap from youtube, and then ride into season 3. This one is a 4-pack but it's really a 2-pack since there were two good episodes and two lesser ones. Not a bad ratio for a season 2 set.
Diana Muldaur (Pulaski) is a great actress but she was never given good material to work with --- always over obvious and silly lines and plots. Her comment to Picard in Peak Performance when Picard said he was preparing for a battle simulation but stuck having to nursemaid an android was excellent ... "the burdens of command" and her delivery was a hint of what she could have been as a McCoy like foil to Picard. I guess there wasn't room for a character like that since we also have Guinan and I wouldn't give having Guinan up for anything. Glad to have Beverly back.
Onwards to Season 3. Thanks for your reactions!

Prior to watching your reactions, I had forgotten that Lisa (Anne Ramsay) of Mad About You was in TNG.

I still like Shades of Gray. Maybe it's different now that Star Trek is so accessible. When it originally aired I thought it was cool to see all those things again as TNG wasn't in reruns and there wasn't a good way to watch it unless you happened to record it. I still enjoy when it comes up in a re-watch. I think the premise of the episode - a microbe taking over Riker's nervous system and the solution being stimulating brain chemicals to combat them through memories was kind of neat.

I'll let you off with not saying 'commercial break' but if you ever don't say 'space' at the start of an episode i'll be emotionally damaged!

I had forgotten how much I like Manhunt and The Emissary. Your enjoyment of Lwaxana and Picard is quite infectious.
And what's more - I think your take on Worf's attitude towards Klingon culture vs that of other Klingons who grew up in their culture is spot on!

I really like Suzie Plakson (who played K'Ehleyr). She's played a number of roles in the franchise and she's great in all of them.

Betazoids like Deanna and Lwaxana have black irises which make their eyes look suuuuper dark. There's a Betazoid character in Voyager who sports the same eyes. Could you imagine how unsettling it would be if a character looked like that who was a psychopath or something?

I'll have to +1 someone else's suggestion on watching DS9 after TNG based on the kind of stuff you've enjoyed so far in TNG!
They perfected the balance between longer story arcs and more self contained episodes.

I forgot about the clip show. I am not sure I ever watched it again after it first aired. Oh..... I know you have a busy schedule but you need to add The Bear to the list. I just started watching it and you could burn through both seasons in no time. It is a very good show to react to. Lots of emotion and fast paced drama. Really tense. Oh again... i hope you got your Paramount Plus cut for forcing me to get ParPlus to follow along with Trek. I had a few days off and burned through all of season 2 reactions.

Indeed! And this particular episode IIRC includes the only time when Lwaxana talks to the computer, meaning Majel talks to herself 😄

Congrats on getting through the worst episode of TNG. It's all uphill from here...except for season 7, there's some clunkers there too.

Actually didn't mind the final episode it's always fun seeing Jen's joy for the characters and show no matter the episode. Ngl when I didn't hear commercial break during the first episode I feared they were a thing of the past I'm happy they returned the next episode 🥳 I've enjoyed every episode season 1 and 2 I'm easily pleased 😀 look forward now to season 3 🙌🍿🖖

You can skip the YouTube edit for Shades of Gray. Nothing important happened there (as far as the rest of the series goes).

I see these first 2 seasons as establishing ones - world building, if you will. This would never, ever happen today, but even though the stories are often meandering and contain multiple sub-standard plot lines, we get to spend time with our crew and become invested with them. Then the following seasons have all the more impact.

I'm with you on clip shows. Seems that every single T.V. series has them for filler. Only a handful of clip shows are worth watching because the episode would introduce either a new recurring antagonist or protagonist.

Second this. DS9 debuted in TNG's 6th season between episodes 11 and 12. People will say that it might be too much or confusing, but they played back to back when they were aired so Jen would be fine.

Hi Jen! Lwaxana Troi's character is played by Majel Barrett-Roddenberry she's the wife of Gene Roddenberry the creator of Star Trek. She also does the computer voice in TNG and other Star Trek tv shows.

Season 2 done. Yay! for the quad episode drop to get through it. On to Season 3.
Manhunt - a pretty good Luaxanna episode. They are always good for a diversion, and I love Mr. Homm.
The Emmisary is my final Top Ten episode. Suzy Plakson is amazing, and it's our first real Worf episode, getting some more dirt on him and a backstory and some honest exposure to his character, not to mention species.
Peak Performance is actually pretty good too. What I noticed this time around is that Worf is starting to get a few more moments. I liked it as well.
Shades of Gray, yeah its a clip episode. ick. It is nice to see Tasha Yar and Doctor Beverly Crusher in those clips again, though. We missed those two in season 2.
Season 3 - straight up, it is HARD to come up with a top 10 episode list. There are only 2 or 3 just absolute clunkers in season 3, and while I have my favorites, the rest of the episodes all have something charming and contributory to the show. Any of the remaining could be in or out of someone else's top 10. So hyped for it. Let's gooooo....

Yeah I think the writer's strike, plus going overbudget on the Borg episode meant it was a shorter season, and they needed to save money. As clip shows go, it's not the worst ever - and hey, sometimes it's nice to be reminded of some great moments. But I doubt it's anyone's favorite episode...

2 Episodes a week makes sense (or whatever pace lets you absorb the show and enjoy it) - but it's a treat to get four! I agree that Emissary and Peak Performance were really good episodes - they don't seem talked about so much from what I can see - but I like them! Worf is a great character. I loved the Kheylar character too.

Unfortunately I just can't keep up with that schedule. It takes a lot of extra time to render and upload longer videos, at the expense of editing other things

Bunch of episodes, with a bunch of notable extras and guest stars, Suzie Plakson of course with some great comic chops here in her 2nd TNG appearance, this time with future Mad About You co-star Anne Ramsay in HER 2nd TNG appearance as ensign Clancy (red-shirting it this time). And yes, that was the neighbour from Office Space at Tactical, sporting what I must assume is a tactical perm.
Then in Peak Performance taking the Tactical station is Glenn Morshower, who shows up a lot in various things playing law enforcement or military commanders.

In next season’s clip show, Troi regains consciousness at precisely 42 minutes and 30 seconds, after she experiences a scary flashback to Riker’s clip show.
Seriously though, nothing important happened in Shades of Gray. I doubt YouTube will miss it except for four commenters who will be thoroughly excoriated in the replies.

Sn 2 Ep 19, "Manhunt": This one shows glimpses of how the crew (and the actors) are becoming a more of a family, especially the scene in Picard's ready room with Riker and Troi on the sofa. That kind of familiar humor with each other is what you have to look forward to, and why TNG fans prefer season 3 onward.

Paramount forced the clip show because the show had spent a lot of money that season.

Love seeing four episodes this week so we can get to season three. And this collection has several Trek staples: space politics, science mystery, holodeck fun, low quality filler, and of course, unashamed horniness. Just missing a good philosophical/morality metaphor episode. Can't wait for season 3.

Season 3 is where it gets good. Plus, when it comes to the remastering, the quality will skyrocket again, as Season 3 was back in the hands of CBS Digital, who also did season 1, and 5-7. Seasons 2 and 4 were outsourced. Season 4 faired a good bit better than season 2.

Jen, did you recognize the Klingon woman from ep 20, K'Ehlar? She's actress Suzie Plakson, and she last appeared in TNG as Lt. Selar, MD, who was the nurse to old Dr. Ira Graves (the AI specialist that downloaded his brain into Data in s2e16).

The shortened 2nd season (22 instead of 26 episodes), and the final episode being a clip-show, is due to the writers' strike of 1988. And yeah, it's the worst.
