The great writer Elizabeth Bear once told me that Casablanca is a perfect example of a character in conflict with himself. Rick begins the film believing that he wants to be left alone; then he thinks that he wants Ilse; only at the end does he realize he wants to be part of something bigger than himself.

The dialog, the editing, the noir cinematography. The fact that most of the background players are refugees in real life. I love all of it so much. Thank you for letting me visit again.
