Comments

I am behind, but I am catching up on the TNG episodes.

“I think I want to be a Betazoid now.” Humanity would benefit if all of us had a some Betazoid in us.

Thegonagle

Star Trek The Next Generation is pretty much when Star Trek started to become a household staple. Captain Picard is a very direct and diplomatic Captain and alongside his first officer Commander William Riker who's strategic skills definitely make him maybe the best Commander in all of Starfleet. You will enjoy Seasons 1-2 but I will guarantee you will fall in love with STNG in Season 3 and beyond because that is where this series starts to show how good it really is and boy does this series deliver in that in spades. Some of the episodes are emotional some are downright shocking some will leave you with more questions than answers like this episode. But this is the one series that really went where no man has gone before.

Anakin Starkiller

Long time viewer of your channel on YT, happy to be here!

Just Me Chris

I love they have a Klingon on the crew. It's a direct call back to the TOS episode you watched, Errand of Mercy, where they said one day humans and Klingons would one day become freinds.

John

Your reaction to Bones was so precious! I hope you watch many many TNG episodes. It's so worth it.

Kev Longley

for your size comparison, the TOS Enterprise was 23 decks tall. the Enterprise-D is 42 decks from belly to main bridge

ANDREW HEBRON

I love, love, love, your musical observations. They're wonderful. Michael Dorn (Worf) is a pilot in real life. This series became so famous that once, when he was radioing in an emergency to the tower, the air traffic controller said, "Wait, is that Worf??"

Ken Schneyer

I’m assuming you’ve got people who picked all the best episodes. You are in for a real journey!

Chuck Jacobson

Well, this did it. I am now a patreon member. :) I love your content, and I hope you just keep rolling on through the Star Trek universe. Thank you so much, and this was a great reaction.

Damon Corrigan

"Where no MAN, where no ONE has gone before." Also, check out this week's schedule. :)

David Brown

Can I ask an honest question? Why tell her stuff she's going to find out eventually? Why not just let her find out in the course of the show?

Kane Is Able

Thank you. I don't understand these so called fans that act like 1 & 2 can just be skipped. There are some amazing episodes in 1 & 2, and, yes, some that aren't as great.

Kane Is Able

The opening dialogue was obviously changed from "where no man" to ""where no one has gone before." to fit with the times. That's why, in the last movie, Kirk repeated the dialogue but used both, "where no man, no one has gone before."

Kane Is Able

Jen, this is my best piece of advice moving forward. Be careful in the comments section. Star Trek fans love commenting spoilers that you're going to find out. They're passionate, but they love to be the first to tell you something that you don't need to know yet. (For example, I'm surprised no one commented, "You may not be done with the og cast wait for the first episode.") It's my biggest pet peeves in comments section. Seeing you recognize and get so excited about McCoy in the first episode is priceless, and shouldn't be ruined.

Kane Is Able

I'd prefer her to watch whole seasons of TNG. Everybody is too impatient and wants her to just skip everything.

Kane Is Able

Mine is perfect. In America. Are you in a different country?

Kane Is Able

No. They're not. Please stop telling her that and let her decide for herself.

Kane Is Able

Remember none of these actors had any idea of what they were getting into with the fandom. And Picard's (Sir Patrick Stewart ) passion has always been stage acting so there will be a lot of Shakespeare.

TuvixLogic

you slay, Soo happy for this series FYI they get so much better together.

TuvixLogic

You say you are a terrible whistler, I assure you I am worse. I can't make even the slightest of sounds.

Kevin Bartelen

Jen, please don't believe the seasons 1-2 are crap comments. The first 2 seasons were good with many solid episodes. But the next 3 (3-5) were fantastic, and the last two were somewhere in between.

ArsTropica

Like some of the other people have said, seasons 1-2 are mostly not that great. Just watch the crowd-recommended episodes and get to season 3 ASAP ).

M L

Jen I’d love it if you watched the episodes that aren’t in the top 10 off camera and just give us a summary of what you thought of them

Brett Whittaker

The first two seasons of tng are mostly crap. I hope you only watch selected episodes.

Benjamin Gerrald

Goodness these episodes have been majorly cut compared to my very old iTunes versions. Still it's great to see your reactions to this, "my" beloved Star Trek series! So glad the show seems to have made an immediate impact with you and I'm very much looking forward to you watching classics like Yesterday's Enterprise, The Best of Both Worlds, Time's Arrow and many more!

Anthony Peterson

The guy in the red shirt that doesn't say much on the battle bridge at conn is Miles O'Brien. He's a minor character on this show but a main character in DS9 so watch out for him and follow his storyline through this show!

Reed James

Yo I love you on YT but TNG convinced me to join here, have fun!

Steve Penny

This is pretty much the only way I'd consent to watching theses two eps in their entirety again since 1987. It was enjoyable seeing your reaction to these new (to you) characters. I grew to love this show as much as the original but I still cringed in all the same places. I feel confident that you'll grow a fondness for this crew just as strong if not more that you did for Kirk's crew. I hope you make it all the way to "Strange New Worlds". Can't wait for you to see what awaits you there. Oh, and then there's "Deep Space Nine". Dying to see how you react to that. That's a DIFFERENT kind of Trek altogether.

Ortizmo

Keep in mind that as this is the pilot episode, the characters haven't been completely fleshed out (as you're suggesting when talking about Picard softening up a bit). In fact, 3 of the characters (not all main ones) will switch roles as well as uniform colors. The guy who was the "Battle bridge Conn" becomes a recurring character, although I don't think he actually gets a name until the 2nd season. In fact, I'd be willing to bet that he's been in more episodes of Star Trek (across various series) than anyone else. Not to get too much into spoilers, but he ends up as a main character on another Trek series. Roddenberry originally wanted Picard to wear a hair piece because he didn't want a bald captain. However, it looked horrible, so he said "Never mind..." The original Enterprise sort of had a "battle bridge" but it was referred to as the auxiliary control bridge (basically a backup in case the regular bridge became too damaged). The room where Picard talks with Riker is actually a specific room off the bridge (or in this case the battle bridge) that's meant for strategizing (without doing so on the bridge). The captain also has an office right by the bridge referred to as the captain's ready room. When the ship separates, it's more than just the people on the battle bridge who are in the main section. The saucer is largely where the crew quarters are. The bottom section has the engineering section and most of the weapons (the saucer section does have some of those), so there's still a lot of the crew still on board when they separate, it's just that the nonessential personnel can be taken out of harm's way. Most of the ship's power is in the bottom section and without the saucer section, it becomes more maneuverable (less overall mass to deal with) and a slightly smaller target. Just letting you know (not a huge spoiler), since the separation effects footage was rather expensive to make, it isn't done often in the show. They just wanted to show this new feature in the pilot as a "look what this ship can do!" type of thing.

Chris Biebel

The Next Gen movies are brilliant but it'll be worth taking the time to get thru the series, you'll fall in love with the whole new crew i guarantee!

Stuart Biegala

Good point. It's almost a follow-up episode to the pilot.

ArsTropica

Can't wait for you to watch Star Trek Generations movie.

Derek Big D Garcia

Just don't skip the first regular episode after the pilot movie, S01E03 The Naked Now. It doesn't seem to have made the Top 10 List winners, but it has something important to know for context for a couple of episodes that did make the list.

David Brown

That's how I see it too. Even some of the "bad" ones may be important viewing. For example, I don't think Skin of Evil would make it to top 5, probably not even top 10. Yet it is hard to deny its importance.

Gábor Árki

Strangely I searched for it on prime and it wasn't on there so instead watching on Netflix but have to keep pausing every minute or so but nm 👍 sidenote the comunicater I got ya which looks great btw is the next generation one so very fitting 🙌

Ian

Hey guys I've been told the Amazon versions of these episodes sync perfectly if that's helpful

Jen M

This was a very enjoyable reaction. My Blu-ray copy synced perfectly. I always enjoy when Jen is talking about the score. I don't have such a good ear for that and often notice things only after she is pointing them out. I felt a thrill when Jen realized who the "admiral" was. She seems to have a good rapport with the new crew, even though they are still rough around the edges in these first few episodes. I'm curious to see how her opinions will evolve as the show progresses. A fun trivia about Patrick Stewart he often jokes about, that he was not very keen on joining the show. He thought that the contract was too long and restrictive, and he did not want to spend seven years of his life on a sci-fi series. His agent persuaded him to take the role, telling him that he could enjoy some sunny weather in Los Angeles and make some money, and that the show would probably be cancelled soon anyway. Well, here we are 36 years later with 7 seasons of TNG, 4 movies, and 3 seasons of Picard.

Gábor Árki

Yeah the Paramount Plus version is cut way different, which is too bad. I'll look forward to the edited reactions.

Camron

I enjoyed your reaction to this. I watched this with you on my BluRay copies and had no issue with sync'ing with you. I'm glad you've continued your Star Trek venture with the Next Generation.

Todd Preble

Anyone else watching their copy of the episode on UK Paramount Plus have a rough time syncing up the episode? It was a nightmare. The breaks for ads were twice as long(so much so I thought my stream had crashed) and there were even scenes in a completely different order to Jen's version.

Patrick

I was going to point this out as well... if you pay close attention, even in "Farpoint" you see he often hints VERY strongly about what the correct course of action should be by playing into Picard's Federation beliefs. He's an interesting character.

Christopher Boscarino

I love this so much.

Raven Dark

I was quite young when this came out, and quite young when I started watching - too young to remember when exactly. It's been without a doubt the singular most comforting, and perhaps formative thing on television for me. The way the crew interact and approach problems - it's the most aspirational future I've seen portrayed. The character of Picard especially was a hero and a role-model. I felt like this show, more than anything else in the cultural landscape, encouraged my scientific and philosophical curiosity. And what's more - just like in TOS, almost every episode has a moral dilemma. In the end, our crew communicatively and cooperatively find a solution through reason, empathy, openness and curiosity. In short - the humanistic ethics that lie at the heart of what Star Trek is are on full display in TNG just like in TOS - only with a perhaps somewhat more deliberative approach. I would credit Star Trek, and in particular TNG and the character of Picard with playing a not insignificant part in continually encouraging me to pursue my scientific and philosophical interests, and to try and live the values that Trek represents so well. Eventually - I got a graduate degree in philosophy, formal logic, and philosophy of science... which I haven't regretted a day in my life. I can't really put into words how much TNG means to me - and it's so great to see other people getting into Trek, and being on this journey with you is just wonderful. Thank you, Jen! Live long and prosper

Michael Bauer

It's true that the show really finds its footing in the third season - but I do think the first two seasons are somewhat under-appreciated. Season 2's "Measure Of A Man" is definitely among my top 5 Trek episodes of all shows - my top 5 episodes of any show, actually. It is also consistently rated as one of the best TNG episodes. But there are other good ones in those first two seasons - not great in many cases, flawed in a few aspects - but good. There's usually something interesting and very Star Trek about the concepts, even when you can see that they haven't found their voice yet - and of course the first two seasons establish the setting and the characters. A few quite important things happen in those seasons, as well - and important events in the characters' backstories are introduced, which you'd miss otherwise. Even some lackluster episodes introduce elements that define aspects of characters or start developments that come to fruition years later. I just looked over the the S1 episode list - and by my count, there are only about 9 episodes in there which don't introduce some defining aspects of characters / situations / developments which come back later or play a role throughout the show. P.S.: I had forgotten how good John DeLancie is even in the first episode. He's such a joy to behold as Q. Love it :)

Michael Bauer

For anyone interested, a comparison between the DVD and the remastered Blu-ray for Encounter at Farpoint: https://youtu.be/fVK0Y9XBgmA

Gábor Árki

Woohoo! Will catch this after work. Always looking forward to The Next Jen.

Jason Scade

Jen, I hope you are watching the remastered version in HD, although I think streaming platforms do offer only this one nowadays. It makes a huge difference in picture quality and a great story of its own. The series was shot on film, but in order to save money all the editing and visual effects have been finished on videotape. So, the entire series only existed in standard definition, and the first few seasons not even on digital, but analogue video tapes. CBS had to go back to the Paramount vault, find all the daily camera negatives luckily still preserved and in storage, find all the actual shots used for the episodes, scan them in HD, then redo the entire editing, visual effects, and post processing from scratch. Essentially, they had to redo the entire show once again, apart from the actual photography. I disagree with those who advise skipping the first two seasons of TNG and I'm afraid even 10 episodes per season would leave out several important ones. TNG is not entirely episodic, but rather has some continuity and development across its episodes. There are many episodes that refer to or build on previous events, characters, and relationships. These episodes may enhance the understanding and enjoyment of later seasons for a new viewer. Looking at the episode list, I estimate that more than half of the first season is either relevant, depending on which episodes from later seasons are selected, or simply good. This may not matter for someone who has already seen the series and does not like some of them, thus wishes they are just skipped, but it may make a difference for someone who is watching TNG for the first time. PS: just browsing through the list of the synopsis I think 5, 6, 9, 11, 12, 13, 20, 23 are all containing important introductions, backstories, or elements for later storylines and episodes.

Gábor Árki

TNG is probably my favourite show ever, funny though I haven’t watched Farpoint in a really long time and I actually really enjoyed that. The first season they were really trying to find their feet and it really is hit and miss, but really eager to watch along with you Jen!

Brett Whittaker

imo, this cast has had the greatest impact on the franchise as a whole. the og crew with Kirk is legendary but this Next Generation crew bridges them with the rest of the franchise over the decades and up to the present day. so much lore of Star Trek is built around this crew and am excited to see you get into it!!! i hope all the Q episodes win the polls!!! cant wait for more!!!

daniel j brooks

Excited, it's rare to see reactions to TNG :)

Bart Dorsey

Please get by the first two seasons as fast as possible and concentrate on the rest of the series. As far as watching whole seasons leave that for the next series Deep Space 9, my personal favorite of all the series. Glad to hear your version has this as one part, Netflix does this and it is the way to go for those rare episodes that aired as two hour episodes. If they are broken down into two separate episodes a lot, and I mean a lot is cut out to make room for the second part recap and opening credits. Most two parters however aired separately at source and in that case that is the only version. I found this out with the series finale which was a two part episode aired as one, a massive amount was lost in the versions that aired as two parts.

Andrew Roach

As asshole as he is, Q is not a villain

JPDotCom23

Data is the character I'm sticking with! Hard to believe 400 hundred years in the future and still no cure for male hair loss,jk. :)

Celeste McAllister

I can't tell you how happy I am that you are enjoying TNG! My Mother was a huge Star Trek fan so we watched every movie and TV show. This series means a lot to me and I can't wait for you to see what's out there!

Wade Wallenstein

I hear the "don't start until season 3" thing a lot and while there's definitely a preponderance of weaker episodes there are also some straight bangers too. Either way I'm excited for this, the more Trek the better! 🖖

Preaching to the Horse's Mouth

definitely has that pilot episode wonkyness but its still charming. i think i selected the 20 best episodes in season 1 and 2 in the poll. you should just use that as your guide directly! :) also what version are you watching? i was getting naturally desynced watching this had to keep adjusting it to keep it close to where you were at.

rubberkidney

Much of the scripts for season 1 were originally written in the 70's, when they were trying to reboot the series, they were re-written for this series.

JPDotCom23

Lol I'm sure I'll get lots of stuff wrong. I just meant he can compute things quickly

Jen M

"Data's just like a computer." Me: cries a little inside

Christopher Boscarino

I really don't remember that much of those first seasons but I don't recall hating them... it was new Star Trek on TV!!!

Tim Arnold

Why am i nervous

Chris

Yeah but you only know that because you watched it all. I think that's part of the experience. Gotta wade through the bad and weird one-offs that dont move the story at all. I don't want to watch that again personally, but a trekkie has to do it at least once!

Chris

There probably aren't 10 good episodes in the first two seasons. The show basically resets in season 3, which is when it gets good.

Adverb

MAKE IT SO!
