The live long and prosper sign was introduced to the series by Leonard Nimoy. He was Jewish, and the sign is one of the Jewish symbols for the name of God. The story goes that he was at Temple as a child and everyone was supposed to close their eyes because the Rabbi was showing the holy symbol and no one was supposed to look at it because it was too holy. Nimoy peeked, and what he saw was the Rabbi holding his hand with the two sets of fingers together. The rest is sci-fi history. 1 Reply
