Licence to Kill (1989) Full Length Reaction

Effective immediately, your license to kill is revoked.

One more 007 with Handsome Bond! Don't get me wrong I loved Connery and Moore a lot, so much fun, but Dalton might have risen right to the top as Bond for me! Lots to love in this movie-- loved the darker tone, sooo many explosions, the cool way the music was new but also paid homage to the old, great villain, Q in the field, a lair (which blew up!), gadgets, and Timothy just being great. Wish sooo much he had done a few more!! What other movies has Dalton done that I should check out??

A note on the title: The Brit way is 'Licence', NA way is 'License'. Which one is used more?

Loving the way you've so embraced the world of Bond! Your reaction to the manta ray disguise was priceless XD

Throwing in my recommendation for Time Bandits and Brazil, as well as for Life of Brian. I first saw this movie with a group of friends the weekend after my High School graduation in 1975. It was the funniest thing any of us had ever seen and we returned to watch it many times that summer, until we could quote each line of dialog. An episode of Game of Thrones (Season 3 I believe) included a scene in which a soldier defending a city challenges the best fighter from the invading army to a one-on-one battle. He speaks in a foreign language, but the translation is word-for-word the string of insults from the French Soldier in this movie.

The end credits song that you recognized was sung by Patti LaBelle. It was written for the film and kind of ties into dialog near the end. The song was later covered by Celine Dion and that may be where you know it from. It was a hit for her.

I believe four things "conspired" to stop Dalton at only 2 movies: 1 I think his movies did not do as well as hoped at the box office, which directly relates to the next point. 2 I think his movies were ahead of their time. Coming off of the more silly and popular Roger Moore movies audiences were not quite ready for this serious tone yet. 3 There were legal issues and movie rights issues which went to court which is why there was such a long delay before the next Bond movie came out. 4 As noted by another comment Pierce Brosnan, the studios choice for the next Bond after Moore, was now available.

Benicio only has a small role, but Sin City should definitely be on your radar at some point.

you asked what Benicio movies you should watch.....I highly recommend Sicario. Its fantastic.

Andy Bodkin

same actor for Felix Lighter (sp?) in "Live and Let die", so that's fun.

It's interesting how opinions change over time..Example "The Shining" classic film.won Razzies for worst actor, actress and director..now masterpiece. Love Timothy Dalton but when I was 16 when the flicks came out me and my friends thought he was over the top acting..we made fun of him constantly..still liked the flicks..but now he's considered subtle and nuanced.

There was an amazing film done back in 1968 called "The Lion In Winter". It starred Peter O'Toole as King Henry II of England, Katherine Hepburn as Queen Eleanor, Anthony Hopkins (in his first film role) as Prince Richard the Lionheart, John Castle as Prince Geoffrey, Nigel Terry as Prince John, and...Timothy Dalton (in his first film role) as King Phillip II of France.

You asked what Bond saw on the floor of the fish shop/aquarium that told him he was in the right place. He saw the carnation Felix wore as a boutonnière at his wedding....

Chris Gronau

You might like Dalton as Prince Barin in Flash Gordon. He did it in 1980 before the Bond films.

Wow, it turns out I’d never seen this Bond movie before, I had seriously been missing out. Personally I found The Living Daylights was as forgettable as I remember (eh?) and this led to an unfair opinion I had of Dalton’s Bond, but not anymore. This was easily one of the best Bond movies yet, and for me feels like a precursor to Craig. I’ll certainly be remembering this one.

Now that you've finished the 80s Bonds, an interesting note: John Glen directed all of the 80s Bond films and he was especially ruthless to Bond Allies. Luigi in For Your Eyes Only, Vijay in Octopussy, both Tibbett and Chuck Lee in A View to a Kill, Saunders in The Living Daylights, and Sharkey in Licence to Kill. Of the major allies, only Columbo (Pistachios) survived not counting the recurring Felix Leiter... who only loses a leg... And a wife :(.
