Added 2023-04-23 19:40:33 +0000 UTC
The battle begins again, only this time it's not a world we win. It's a universe.
KHAN!!!!!!!!!!!!! I was shocked to see him in Space Seed and what an epic villain he is! Magnetic, complex, intelligent-- I don't know if we see more of him in the series but I am now pumped to see Wrath of Khan!!! I enjoyed both eps but MAN was it cool meeting Khan :) Next time will be S1E28 The City on the Edge of Forever + S02E01 Amok Time. Can't wait!!

Yeah I was floored by their remaking of it. Truly was an excellent episode and a warning to thinking that Star Trek's Federation "can't we all just get along" approach that in some respects was very over due....BNW's reimagined Gorn are also a good and terrifying case for this and in my opinion something that got lost in TNG and DS9. Voyager resurfaced it but not always at a level that would have made it more compelling.

If you're curious about the new Trek series Strange New Worlds, the season 1 finale, episode 10 "Quality of Mercy" ties in with Balance of Terror. They did a REALLY good job with it.

Dropping Space Seed makes no sense if the intent is to watch the films.

I really think just 10 episodes (really 9, since you are counting one two part episode as a two separate episodes) isn't really enough to get the full feel of a famous series with almost 80 episodes. You don't get the introduction of the Klingons (need "Errand of Mercy" for that, plus possibly "Private Little War"). You don't get as many of the social commentary episodes (Best one for that is "Let That Be Your Last Battlefield). You should have an episode with a surprise viewpoint regarding an alien ("Devil in the Dark"). Two that have pop culture references ("Arena" (Gorn) and "Miri" ("Bonk, bonk on the head!")). and a precursor to the first movie ("Changeling").

"I want to learn more about the Vulcans." Stay tuned for "Amok Time"!

The director of the second Star Trek film (the film that became Wrath of Khan) watched all 78 ST:TOS episodes before he decided on the plot for this film. He realized that "Space Seed" left an open plot point: what became of Khan? Thus, the film.

The Vulcan lifespan is in the vicinity of 200-300 years.

Very much looking forward to your reaction to "City on the Edge of Forever" and "Amok Time", which were written by two of the greatest SF short-story authors of the 20th century, Harlan Ellison and Theodore Sturgeon, respectively.

I get that, I love Errand of Mercy, but you have to admit, Trouble with Tribbles is a good representative as well. I personally would have probably dropped Space Seed and its a great episode.

I have to admit I was sad Trouble with Tribbles won out over Errand of Mercy.

Khan called Marla his 'Superior Woman' that's flattering coming from a super hybrid alpha male with superiority issues,Marla McGuivers fell for the leader of the pack, now she must be stronger than she ever imagined for the hardships awaiting them on Seti Alpha V...what a great ending to an episode,I want to know what happened on Seti Alpha V in the years following 'Space Seed'♡

And just throwing my two cents in, although "Space Seed" may have won your poll and is a great episode, "City on the Edge of Forever" is far and away the most popular choice in almost every poll like this I have ever read and I have been a fan since the 60s.

Actually Jen, back then McCoy's line about 2 million planets and a million, million galaxies would have been a decent estimate in 1966. The knowledge we have gained since then in astronomy tells us there are between 40 and 100 Million earth like planets, and the latest estimates are between 100 and 200 billion galaxies.

"Balance of Terror" was based on a WW2 movie, "The Enemy Below" (1957), about a similar tactical battle between the captain of an American destroyer (Robert Mitchum) and a German U-boat captain (Kurt Jurgens).

Oooh, Jen! I can wait for you to watch S1:E28 The City on the Edge of Forever. It's one of my favorites, And yes, Ricardo Montalban does indeed reprise his role as Khan in Star Trek II: The Wrath Of Khan. He is an amazing villain!!

Balance of Terror is a critical episode up until today as it set the story for the Romulan empire. They are basically super secretive and underhanded. They aare definitely and enemy of the Federation.

Just a heads-up that we recommended she watch some TOS episodes after she expressed interest in watching the original films... Logic suggests that if she was only interested in TOS, she would be watching ALL of them, not just certain episodes.

Yes, she wanted to watch the original films but we told her that she would appreciate them more if she watched some episodes of TOS first.

Not sure if your plan is just to watch the 'trilogy' of Star Trek II, III, and IV, but I think from some of your comments thus far you'd probably appreciate Star Trek: The Motion Picture - it's admittedly not everyone's favourite Trek movie, but it's gained more of an appreciation as the years have gone by (you could argue it's the film that's closest in spirit to the series), and (since you've mentioned you like the music) it has an incredible score (that's just as iconic as the theme for TOS). If you do decide to watch it, make sure to watch the Director's Cut as it is far superior to the theatrical cut (even more so the recent remastered version) - the original release was barely finished before the premiere (seriously - delays to the special effects meant the 'final' cut was assembled and flown directly to the premiere, without time for proper colour grading)

I was going to mention that you should have recognized Ricardo Montalban from first The Naked Gun movie, but then I realized that you haven't seen that one yet. He was a very famous actor (most famous as "Mr. Roarke" who ran Fantasy Island). He tended to play characters who were generally very sophisticated, since his diction really comes across as being from someone with a high classed upbringing. And yes, he does reprise the role in the movie, and he's even better in the movie than he was in the TV episode.
BTW, you mentioned seeing the future from the perspective of the 70s, but this is actually from farther back. This episode was from 1967,

Wow, enjoyed this reaction and rewatch as well. I am a huge Trek and Star Wars fan so revisiting these show is a really pleasure. You aren't going to regret taking the time to understand Star Trek more when you finally get to the films.
Also, When you get to the Star Trek: The Next Generation films, I advise you take another poll on which 80's/90's episodes you should watch first.
Kudos!

Balance of Terror made the Top 10 list for good reason -- it's got great character moments and solid action.
To be fair though, it is a retelling of 2 movies which preceeded it by 8-9 years: The Enemy Below (1957) and Run Silent, Run Deep (1958). BoT heavily borrows main plot points from both movies. Definitely worth a watch if for no other reason than to see the source material in context.

Gold uniforms: Command
Red uniforms: Security and Engineering
Blue uniforms: Science and medical
I wouldn't presume to tell you, Jen, which department you'd be in but absolutely use that to pick the one you think would best suit you 🙂
So the history with the Vulcans and Romulans is that a few thousand years ago the Vulcans overcame their warlike tendencies by becoming very pacifist and logical. They suppress their emotions and live in way where they base their decisions on logic. Hence the line about Spock saving Stiles so that he could return to duty rather than over any sense of comraderie, the joke being that deep down Spock does indeed feel that but he's trying to cover it up. The Romulans on the other hand do still feel emotion, since they broke off from the Vulcans at about the time of their peaceful realignment. Devious, conniving, and still very warlike they are in a lot of ways polar opposites of the Vulcans.
I really love Balance of Terror, watching Kirk and the Romulan commander going move for move against each other in a way that's very reminiscent of the cold war fiction of the time, submarine captains hunting each other etc Just really great stuff.
Yes, Vulcans live much longer than humans. Up to as long as 300 at the outside but usually averaging a bit less than that.

I'm so glad you're watching episodes of Star Trek TOS and hope you continue with the TOS movies. Either way, after your finish with the TV episodes you've got planned I recommend a movie called Please Stand By. There are many that don't care for that movie, but I think it would be right up your alley. People like me that have a special place for Star Trek because it helped to get through some tough periods of life really connect to that film.
