The Living Daylights (1987) Full Length Reaction

Duty has no sweethearts.

Well we've entered a new Bond era and I've got a new crush! I had a lot of fun with this one! Loved Timothy Dalton as Bond, he is very charming and handsome! Lots felt familiar in this (a welcome return to the theme music for a lot more of this one!) but it felt different too! Looking forward to seeing more of handsome Bond :)

Please excuse my coughing, I think I turned the volume down for them all but I may have missed some.

The Living Daylights (1987) Full Length Reaction

Comments

TD is a Shakespearian classic theater trained actor,I found one of his earliest films,'The Lion in Winter' 1968.TD played the teenage king Phillip II of France...

Celeste McAllister

Although I have nothing against Timothy Dalton as an actor, I just never thought he was a good fit as James Bond.

Quick Cameo Note: John Barry is the orchestra conductor in the final concert scene with Kara playing. Nice send off as this is his final score in the series.

David Miller

I do wonder how Jen will feel about LTK... it is one of the darkest in the franchise.

Andy Raffle

They are 2 very different types of film.

ArsTropica

btwn the 2, license wins..

Jen, no comment on Salah as the supposed bad guy?!?! Edit: I saw you questioned it, but thought you'd be more excited.

Timothy Dalton is great but there is a lot of revisionist history. Pierce Brosnan was expected to takeover & he would have been the perfect bridge from Roger Moore but that fell through. People applauded and laughed at the ridiculous Roger Moore stuff. Dalton was a big tonal shift and audiences groaned at things like the cello case bobsled cuz the movie played for the most part straight. It got worse with Licence to Kill which was a low box office earner..audiences were put off by the violence and depressing tone. They are classics now though.

Alberto Blanco

Trivia..That was John Barry conducting the Final orchestra scene.

Alberto Blanco

Dalton-tastic! πŸ˜πŸ‘ So happy you enjoyed this lots, the next one is even better and what a magnificent theme song it has. Hugs for retired Miss Moneypenny. πŸ’œ

Jason Scade

He also mentioned in an interview that he was concerned that if he "cocked it up" it would destroy his career.

I really liked Timothy Dalton's Bond. Roger Moore's era was becoming too campy for my tastes. The Living Daylights came out during the height of the AIDS epidemic and promiscuity with multiple partners was falling out of favor compared to the free love of the swinging 60's. That was a reflection of the times. Something you might miss, the Mujahideen in Afghanistan were freedom fighters fighting against the Russian invasion of Afghanistan. They were US allies then when fighting the Russians. They were the Taliban and al Qaeda by the 21st century when the US went into Afghanistan after 9/11.

John

A-Ha had a pretty creative video for Take On Me. You could branch out and react to a music video!

Only one original Moneypenny and one original Jennypenny. I love how you live your truth. Express your love for Bond and its characters (Miss Moneypenny) and musical scores. We become invested and share your enthusiasm. Thanks for the fun and all the hard work from you and your crew. It takes a team to do anything of lasting value, you've got the best. P.S. I'd say you look beautiful and 95% better from the flu.

Clifton Owens

Interesting factoid. Timothy Dalton was asked to play James Bond after Sean Connery left the series. He turned them down because he felt he was too young for the role.

Chris Gronau

Yes, the soundtrack for this one is great! Unfortunately, it's John Barry's final score for the franchise. The Living Daylights came out around the AIDs epidemic, so having Bond with "multiple partners" was somewhat frowned upon at this time, hence Kara was the only Bond girl in the film. I rather liked the romantic subplot in this one because they actually spent time getting to know each other. So this film in particular has a decent number of female fans. Unfortunately, I think the villain(s) in The Living Daylights are a biiit weak in terms of character.
