Backdraft (1991) Full Length Reaction

Fire is a living thing. It breathes, it eats, and it hates.

This one was so good! πŸ”₯πŸ”₯πŸ”₯πŸ”₯ Kurt Russell was awesome (twice!), great music, so many explosions and so much fire! I wasn't cheering for explosions this time, but I was in awe of the villainous fire threatening all the firemen. Loved it! Any other Ron Howard movies I should check out?

Backdraft (1991) Full Length Reaction

Comments

If you recall, Scott Glenn (Axe in Backdraft) was the commander of the USS Dallas in The Hunt for Red October. Scott Glenn had a minor role in Apocalypse Now in which he was a lieutenant in Vietnam who states in letter to his wife: "Sell the house. Sell the car. Sell the kids. Find someone else. Forget it. I'm never coming back. Forget it." Recommended Ron Howard directed movies: -FROST/NIXON (2008). Stunning movie. Rotten Tomatoes (RT) = 93%. -RUSH (2013). Incredible acting by Chris Hemsworth.

Great reaction, I loved it. A backdraft can occur when a compartment fire has little or no ventilation. Due to this, little or no oxygen can flow into the compartment. Then, because fires reduce oxygen, the oxygen concentration decreases. When the oxygen concentration becomes too low to support combustion, some or all of the combustion switches to pyrolysis. However, the hydrocarbons and smoke (primarily particulate matter) remain at a temperature hot enough to auto-ignite. If oxygen is then re-introduced to the compartment, e.g. by opening a door or window to a closed room, while the gasses are still hot enough to auto-ignite, combustion will restart, often abruptly or even explosively, as the gasses are heated by the combustion and expand rapidly because of the rapidly increasing temperature, combined with the energy released from combustion. This was followed by Backdraft 2 (2019).

when they filmed the funeral procession those were real firemen who volunteered to be in the movie

Please check out Thirteen Lives (2022) Ron Howard directing an amazing true story!

Matt C

Oh, yeah! Those are some classic good ones too.

Some other great Kurt Russell movies. Stargate, although he plays secondary to James Spader. Tango and Cash for Stallone/Russell fun cheesy 80s action. The Best of Times for Kurt Russell and Robin Williams comedy/drama. Always loved that one.

Omg that sounds super scary

Jen M

Yeah, I love Scott Glenn!

Richie Cabral

I believe I have mentioned "The Right Stuff" a couple times. I love that movie, and Scott Glenn was great in it.

Shortly after this movie they had a Backdraft show at Universal Studios, and it was amazing how they could control the fire and make the audience feel like they were in a burning building.

Sean Bean: I die in everything. Kurt Russell: Hold my beer.

Vwlss Nvwls

Gotta love Jen watching a movie about fire, and every two minutes saying "I hope nothing explodes." :D

Off hand I can't think of anything that Ron Howard has directed which wasn't great, but Apollo 13 is a must-see for sure.

So, lucky for you I'm a big John Wayne fan! I won't bore you with all that now, but in his era, John Wayne was an icon that basically was the representation of the ultimate American hero tough guy, so depending on how you feel about that, people either loved or hated him for it, but when they say it's John Wayne time, it's basically a way of saying you're going to have to be the lone hero that has to tough it out kind of thing.

Richie Cabral

Firemen do it with big hoses.

Vwlss Nvwls

Such a great movie. Makes me tear up every time

Yeah, all of them. Just kidding. I've already suggested "Parenthood", "Apollo 13" but I suggested you see "The Right Stuff" first, I can't remember if you already did "Willow", "A Beautiful Mind", The Da Vinci Code trilogy,...
