๐Ÿ—ณ๏ธ Poll: Star Trek TOS

Help me choose a selection (likely Top 10) episodes of Star Trek: The Original Series!

Later this month I'll be watching Wrath of Khan (1982) and possibly more of the older movies before finishing the newer movies ๐Ÿ‘

๐Ÿ—ณ๏ธ Poll: Star Trek TOS

Comments

Very curious to hear how the poll came out! Also, I'd love to see your reactions to those episodes.

Ken Schneyer

excited to cast my first vote in a JMR poll!

Jeff Preiss

I understand where youโ€™re coming from โ€ฆ Herbert ๐Ÿ‘€

David Olden

I'm not sure I agree with it's "importance." Given she's watching a limited number (which will likely include the episode you are saying references itยน), I'm not sure it's worth watching that one just for that reason. Come to think of it ๐Ÿค”, the line that references it not only explains what it is (and in clear non-jargon language), but gives us more information about what it references. I hope I wasn't too vague. Trying to be non-spoilery๐Ÿคซ. Be well! ๐Ÿ™‹๐Ÿผโ€โ™‚๏ธ ฮ‡ฮ‡โ€ขโ—โœบโ—โ€ขฮ‡ฮ‡ ยน โ”€ Is it's location D-7? ๐Ÿคท๐Ÿผโ€โ™‚๏ธ Weeeeeee! ๐Ÿคธ๐Ÿผโ€โ™‚๏ธ

Well, I simply HAD to vote on the Star Trek poll! So, I jumped on board the patreon thing. Looking forward to this! I am curious. . .am I the only one to suggest Season 3's "Way to Eden?" ๐Ÿคญ It's certainly never on my "Best of Trek" lists, but I personally find it a delight! I can't say why, as that'd be spoiling ๐Ÿคซ. Thanks sooooo much for doing this Jen! And I totally think doing a handful of favs and not entire show is perfect! ๐Ÿ™‹๐Ÿผโ€โ™‚๏ธ

Thomas

When will the results be announced?

To Wa

Don't forget Errand of Mercy. Important for future backstory.

RJ MacReady

You should post your thoughts as you watch through these TOS episodes.

Jen M

Great idea Jen! I voted for the following for my Top Five: 1. Balance of Terror (Introduces Romulans) 2. Amok Time (explains Vulcans) 3. Trouble with Tribbles (brings in Klingons and is overall fun) 4. Space Seed (introduces Khan) 5. Mirror, Mirror (develops characters and their interaction) There were 5 others I chose for personal preference, like "City On the Edge Of Forever", because I think it's the best episode ever aired of the Original Series, and "The Menagerie", which introduces Captain Pike.

Sean Novack

Just when I think Jen has achieved her final form, she goes all Trek on us... ๐Ÿ‰

ArsTropica

The first episode you MUST watch is... S1E03 - Where No Man Has Gone Before Episodes were aired out of thier intended order. That is the first episode that should be watched in order. The sets and uniforms are a bit different from what they will be for the rest of the series. If S1E00 - The Cage makes the winning list, it should be watched LAST. It is the unaired pilot and was not released to the public until about 20 years after the show ended.

David Brown

Hi there! Just joined for the future ST full lengths! The good thing about Star Trek is, it has seen diffrent eras of film making. And while it allways has been credited as being progressive, every part of the franchise is child of it's time. So you have a wide varitey of stile and content. I myself look forward to reactions of the newer contributions to the franchise (2017 and forward) as they are covered not that frequently. That said the latest series Strange New Worlds has a pilot I am positiv you can show to anyone to say: this is Star Trek!

cosmic wave

both are great episodes. She needs to make it 15 because I would add a couple more as well. The Tholian Web and Space Seed would be my next two with Errand of Mercy and Shore Leave not far behind.

Richard Powers Hardt

Not 'Space Seed'?

Andrew Skow

I agree with Eric, Space Seed is definitely a must if you intend to watch the second Star Trek movie, The Wrath of Khan. (It was the first movie role for Kirstie Alley) I'm hesitant to recommend any other particular episode as they all have their own magic. A more devoted Trekker should really be advising.

Kristopher Wood

I don't know the original episodes enough to specifically recommend certain ones, but before you watch Star Trek II I'd watch the original episode with Kahn that provides the backstory which sets up the movie. I'm sure someone here knows which episode.

Eric Denney

You forgot Errand of Mercy.

RJ MacReady

Jen, I not repeat what I've already said here before, there's a reason star trek has survived for decades it so damm good, and its like joining a very exclusive family, its a highly addictive show and very character driven and a very, very BIG Caven to jump down, and it takes a life time to watch, personally I can see you getting extremely hooked universe just like myself, I look forward to your reaction to our new starfleet cadet.

RebRox65

Those 2 would have been in my top 12!

David Crabtree

Ah, I voted. I wouldn't remember them by title so I looked up descriptions, a lot of them seem pretty good. I like the science fiction adventure episodes and the mind bending ones. But you know the show became loved because of the characters. They're probably all worth watching as time capsule of early television. After watching a few, you could probably watch episodes randomly and it would probably work well. People making a list of what should be watched is probably too strict - there is no undoing decades of time having passed and times changing along with society and technology. Cannot roll back 50 years of time to re-experience everything like the first time. What if someone who has never seen the show watches it all (on their own) and then they make a list, wouldn't that be something? Also a list based on having connection to movies seem like a disservice to The Original Series. Let me watch a random episode now.

Mannygogou

I voted for exactly the same episodes. (with the menagerie & tribbles because I figured out that we could choose more than 10)

ArsTropica

I just voted on the poll: my top 10 are (in no particular order: 1) Space Seed 2) The Doomsday Machine 3) The Enterprise Incident. 4) The Tholian Web. 5) Mirror, Mirror 6) Amok Time 7) A Taste of Armageddon 8) Balance of Terror 9) The City of the Edge of Forever. 10) The Enemy Within.

David Crabtree

Make sure you vote for those on the poll ๐Ÿ‘

Jen M

Episodes of the original series you must watch, in order, Where No Man Has Gone Before (2nd pilot) The Menagerie Balance of Terror City on the Edge of Forever Mirror, Mirror The Doomsday Machine Journey to Babel The Trouble With Tribbles The Enterprise Incident The Empath

Richard Powers Hardt

I love that you're watching a handful of Star Trek TOS! The pacing of those episodes is definitely from its era, but the storytelling is excellent! For Wrath of Khan, I would actually recommend watching that, Star Trek 3, and Star Trek 4, consecutively, as all 3 movies provide one story arc. Just a recommendation, though. I am thoroughly looking forward to your Wrath of Khan reaction! My introduction to Star Trek as a kid was the original films and Star Trek: The Next Generation. I actually saw the original movies before ever going back and watching TOS.

David Crabtree

Oh man, I was one of them jumping up and down to check out the TOS movies. Please don't think that was an endorsement of the TV series. I'm not down on TOS fans; it was the seed that gave us so much more. It's just the movies and the series are radically different creatures.

Andrew Skow

Hi Jen,I have suggestions for ST:TOS, S1 E22 space Seed you have on your list so..S1 E1 'The Man Trap' S1 E28 'The City on the edge of Forever' S2 E6 'The Doomsday Machine' 'S2 E15 'The Trouble with Tribbles' S3 E23 'All our Yesterdays'..looking forward to you watching TOS Jennyโ™ก

Celeste McAllister

This is true, I just really like it so can't help but mention it, haha.

RocktSurgeon

I'm very excited for this, not enough folks do reactions to the older ST stuff, TOS, TNG, the associated movies etc. Just so you're aware ST 2,3,and 4 are kind of a package deal with some overarching story stuff that stretches between them. Can't wait, keep up the great work. Cheers

Preaching to the Horse's Mouth

"The Menagerie" is must-watch, so you should NOT watch the un-aired pilot, "The Cage". I mean, you can watch it afterwards, if you're curious about the non-Shatner pilot, but its a different crew and most of it was re-purposed for use in "The Menagerie" . Also I'm disappointed you're going to be skipping the first movie. But, I know a lot of fans push that because they feel it is boring. The movie just doesn't have the same impact for people that didn't grow up on the original series and then have to wait a decade for its appearance on the big screen.

Thomas Yanez

If you like The Wrath of Kahn, consider Star Trek II, III, and IV as a trilogy and plan to see them all. Skip Star Trek V Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country is the final movie with the original crew. It's a good story on it's own and also a way to farewell the crew.

John

I *HIGHLY* recommend watching TOS Episode "Balance of Terror" and following it up with Star Trek: Strange New Worlds 1x10 "A Quality of Mercy." It would make a great double feature to see them back to back. The two stories are linked in a way that becomes obvious early on and it's a wonderful triubte to both TOS as well as an amazing showcase for the new series Strange New Worlds.

John

All essential episodes for learning the core ST lore. Helps a great deal if you want to take it further than the original 6 movies. Even then it helps understand the original 6 movies a lot more.

RJ MacReady

As some people have already commented, Space Seed is essential viewing if you're going to watch Wrath of Khan, the movie's a literal sequel to the episode. As for the episodes I picked...Balance of Terror(Romulan introduction),Arena(Gorn and classic goofy fighting),Space Seed(Khan),Errand of Mercy(Klingon introduction),The City on the Edge of Forever(Classic),Amok Time(Spock/Vulcan goodies),The Doomsday Machine(classic),Mirror,Mirror(Mirror universe fun),The Trouble with the Tribbles(classic hilarity), Journey to Babel(great alien politics & Spock drama). This is mostly my essentials for TOS though I do usually include The Tholian Web and Day of the Dove. LLAP ๐Ÿ––

CapricanToaster

From someone whoโ€™s never seen the original series, I would suggest you watch some of the original episodes of the series before you see The Wrath of Khan (1982). Also definitely get back to the J.J. Abrams movies and continue with Into Darkness. But yes, watch Wrath of Khan first.

Joe M

The Trouble with Tribbles.

Greg S.

I have cast my votes! I'm excited to see you embark upon this exploration through the Star Trek universe! ๐Ÿ––๐Ÿ˜€

John

Also Wrath of khan is Kirstie Ally's first main movie role.

Joeking

All of the above are worthy, one of my favourites is Bread and Circuses, due to the interaction of Spock and McCoy. Also the Naked Time gives you insight into Mr Sulu, and an underused Irish fella who only appeared in two episodes.

Joeking

The OG Star Trek is the best Star Trek in my opinion. As far as the tv series goes, the hardest part for younger people to get past is the special effects. But, if you can put that aside, I think you'll really like it. The movies, though still old school by todays standards, have much better effects than the show. But, the stories and the chemistry between the main actors is what sets them apart. I personally would start with "Star Trek: The Motion Picture" after the tv series. But, "Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan" is the best Star Trek film ever made, for sure.

Riggo 82

Space seed in particular especially if you want to know the history of Khan.

Joeking

Very happy to see you interested in the original show and their movies. I cast my votes to help you gain some understanding of the movies and some of the characters.

Todd Preble

Do remember that Menagerie is a two-parter that repurposes footage from The Cage (Star Trekโ€™s first unsold pilot episode). City on the Edge of Forever is just a great story! For Wrath of Khan, the only TOS Ep you need for background is Space Seed, but there are many other excellent standalone TOS eps. Iโ€™ll absolutely be voting! ๐Ÿ––

David Olden

She might want to skip "Generations" and do "The Undiscovered Country" because "Generations" is the first with the "Next Generation" cast.

Dustin Denner

Star Trek II: The Wrath Of Khan, Star Trek III: The Search For Spock, and Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home are all a trilogy within the original cast movies, so I highly recommend watching III and IV after watching The Wrath Of Khan. Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country is the final movie for the original cast and is fantastic (on par with The Wrath Of Khan) so I recommend this one as well. You can completely skip over Star Trek V: The Final Frontier because it is the worst movie in the series (it is a stinker of a movie).

Dustin Denner

I grew up watching this series at the sitters house every day waiting for my mother, so I will attempt to select a top 5 or 10 episodes to watch for the best movie enjoyment. I think the most important thing to fully enjoy the movies is just to get a feel for what each of the main characters is like, especially Kirk, Spock, and McCoy (Bones).

Vwlss Nvwls

You might want to do Star Trek 3 after Wrath of Khan also since it is a continuation of the same story. And doesn't have a real need to be before more new trek but personally I've always really liked Star Trek 4 The Journey Home, and Generations. Episode wise, I voted but Trouble with Tribbles, City on the edge, Mirror Mirror and Let That be your Last Battlefield are some of the best/most iconic so hopefully make it.

RocktSurgeon

So you're going to watch these to get a feel for classic trek before watching the movies? Good thinking. Also consider Movies 4 and 6 (although if you do more than just Khan, you'll also have to watch episode 3 or you'll e lost). both 4 and 6 are very good, although not to the level of Khan.

Travis Starnes

*terrible Yoda impersonation* Soโ€ฆstarting down the path of a Trekkie you are, hmm? Lol jk. 15 ish years ago, I definitely had that sort of tribalism; the Star Wars vs Star Trek one but I grew out of it. ๐Ÿ˜…๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ Itโ€™s so fun seeing you digging all this Sci-Fi and 007. Looking forward to the Wrath of Khan and Star Trek Into Darkness. ๐Ÿ˜

Paulo_Maximus

Space seed, Balance of Terror, Errand of Mercy are must sees!

RJ MacReady

Nice! Make sure you vote for it!!

Jen M

You should watch Space Seed before you watch Wrath of Khan you will need that for context.

Jeremy Vickers

Thank you! I appreciate it :)

Jen M

Iโ€™ll just list a few: The Menagerie pt 1-2, Balance of Terror, Space Seed (crucial!), The City on the Edge of Forever, Let That Be Your Last Battlefield, The Trouble with Tribbles and Journey to Babel. I only had a few minutes and could only look at the episode names so I obviously missed a few but I do remember these being really good or important to the overall story.

Johan Petur Klรผver Dam

Perfect, make sure you vote for them! I'm hoping to watch a good selection to have a better background for Wrath of Khan + modern movies ๐Ÿ‘

Jen M

Menagerie and Space Seed are probably the most important for understanding the modern Trek shows.
