The Haunting of Hill House Ep 8-10 Full Length

Well we made it and finally got some answers to the spooky mysteries of Hill House. Great series overall, I really enjoyed it! Great acting, great writing, shot beautifully, I really really liked it.

Watching these last eps, episode 8 in particular was great with that amazing jump scare and Theo's soul crushing monologue.

Looking back over it all I think my favourite part was the episode 5 reveal of Nell as the Bent Neck Lady, that really just got in my head and stayed with me. I am still thinking about it.

I was very surprised we got a happy ending. I have since read that they debated having the very last scene with the creepy red room window in the background so we would be left wondering if the kids were in fact still in the house and never escaped, but they decided it was too cruel.

Also read that there were meant to be several episodes giving back story on the house being built and the Hill family and I do think that would've been good to see!

Overall, really really liked this show. Let me know what you guys think!

Thanks for getting spooky with me guys! :)

*scream warning for these eps*

The part that always hits me hardest in the feels is when Mr. Dudley brings his wife back to the house so that she can die there and be with their children forever. Presumably he returns at some point, too. If you do get the chance, you should re-watch it. Not just for seeing the story through new eyes, but to see if you can find the many, many background ghosts that were there watching the story with us.

Aside from the technical/filmmaking excellence, the reason I love this show is because it's not just a ghost story designed to thrill and titillate. . It absolutely doesn't mean there was nothing supernatural going on in the story - but the supernatural effects of the house both contribute to and help resolve the trauma that the family experiences. The comparison of the house to the world - big, dumb and hungry creatures - is definitely not accidental or casual. It's the beauitful thing about this story, what makes it a work of art. There are so many lessons we can learn about life, parenthood, grief, guilt, building walls, and how we can let past mistakes manacle us, preventing our growth. The fact that it can do all that while still being genuinely scary is just brilliant. There's so much that could be said about this show, but it also likely doesn't need to be said - it's enough to watch it (and perhaps rewatch it). Something that you pick up in a rewatch is the occasional references to the "rooms" the children mention. And you see the younger Hugh is like - what? - but the conversation gets interrupted or moves on. It was a little amusing when you said "we haven't even seen inside the red room yet" - and then you found out that we have, many times... :) Thanks for putting yourself through this one Jen, hope in the end it was worth all the stress!
