Chernobyl Ep 4-5 Full Length Reaction

Well... episode 4 broke me pretty hard... if you know me at all you know I have a soft spot for animals, dogs in particular, so get ready to see me weep 😭

Bit of an extended break between episodes where I was comforted by the very silly + sweet Banjo 😻

Episode 5 was great, it was so fascinating to finally get the minute by minute breakdown of what really happened. I was enthralled.

Really enjoyed this series, if there are more shows based on real events let me know!

Looking forward to watching the next show with you guys, poll ends soon! 😊

⭐ Special thanks to Producers: MattN, Todd Preble, Ed Dunn, Incognito, John Walters, JT, Noby, SwimintheRain, Tim Drake, + those who wish to remain uncredited :)

Chernobyl Ep 4-5 Full Length Reaction

Comments

I did sponsor a couple of people to watch Des this year.

Daryl

Agree. I recommend Des.

Clay F

Ep.4 - Very sombre episode, great reaction. 💜 I know it was very difficult to see the dogs and other animals being shot but, as you know, it was saving them an excruciatingly painful and horrifying death. *hugs*

I give you extra hearts for getting through #4 so well. <3 <3 <3 <3 <3 <3 <3 <3 <3 <3 <3 ;* Even I can't watch that ep without tearing up a little, and watching a creator react makes it worse. This was I think my 5th reaction watch. Plus I've seen twice by myself.

If you wonder why Formin was able to get a job again in the nuclear industry, the Russian people, after learning that the government covered up this flaw and didn't tell the operators about it, saw the three men as scapegoats and martyrs so when he released, public opinion about him was favorable.

"You scientists and your idiot obsession with reason. When the bullet goes through your brain, what does it matter why?" Comrade secret police chief, it matters so that we can stop it from happening again. Facts matter because we can make predictions based on patterns and then we can have houses and roads and medicine and enough food and power plants and elections. Truth matters if you want to build a world to last and not just to make your balls feel big.

Thanks! Good info :)

Would definitely like to watch some of those suggestions!

Jen M

Oh I really want to see a lot of those, The Impossible especially

Jen M

Yes it really felt like more than 5 episodes, they really did so much with the time, very impressive

Jen M

It's crazy it really hasn't even been that long since we discovered nuclear technology

Jen M

Jen, in reference to your question about nuclear power plants supplying their own power, and the role diesel generators play, you can read a nice discussion on that topic on StackExchange (link below). The short answer is: Nuclear power plants near shutdown can either use electricity from the power grid and/or use in-house backup diesel generators to help restore critical functionality when powering up. Note: The diesel generators are only rarely used, if ever. They are used for backup or start-up and plant, and not used in any significant way during normal operation. That is why nuclear power is, in itself, not a contributor to carbon emissions. https://electronics.stackexchange.com/questions/536501/do-power-plants-supply-their-own-electricity

It was very interesting to watch this series for a 2nd time. I'd actually forgotten the moment that Anatoly Dyatlov learned in trial, specifically to what degree he was at fault. Which certainly didn't excuse his blatant dismissal of any level of culpability throughout this portrayal of the event. Paul was exceptional at delivering the performance of someone with a truly objectionable personality. But this moment did explain the route to some of his arrogance. Feeling, although unforgivably as it is, that he would be properly venerated and exonerated. When or even if the truth as he saw it, came to light. But also living in a state of secrecy and propaganda. This led to believing he was the victim of a witch hunt as well. As this was talking place during tail end of the cold war. Rampant tensions would likely have contributed to an unforgiveable state of face saving. It would be interesting for you to see more media centered around this period. You have already watched Charlie Wilson's War. •Tinker Taylor Solider Spy •Crimson Tide •Bridge of Spies •Good Night and Good Luck •Trumbo •The Man Who Knew Too Little (For a silly Billy Murray comedy to add a touch of comedy towards the imbalance.) The Queen's Gambit which has done quite well on the next show poll is set during this period as well. Lastly. As great as Paul's performance is in this show. I wouldn't want you left with that as your current memory of the man. It'll make very little sense, but a small compilation of one of his famous phases from a popular sitcom. https://youtube.com/clip/UgkxL8944shd7Qj9isSqTNSGTqbr4LMl8Dln

Thanks for reacting to this great series Jen. It is a difficult watch and is often distressing but your comments were excellent as always. Despite the contamination of the site — and the inherent risks in operating a reactor with serious design flaws — the Chernobyl nuclear plant continued operation to meet the power needs of Ukraine until its last reactor, reactor 3, was shut down in December 2000. Reactors 2 and 1 were shut down in 1991 and 1996, respectively. Complete decommissioning of the site is expected to be completed by 2028. Some great movies based on actual events include: Black Hawk Down (2001) K-19: The Widowmaker (2002) World Trade Center (2006) The Impossible (2012) Deepwater Horizon (2016) The Finest Hours (2016) Only the Brave (2017) I loved the appearance by Banjo.

Definitely knew these ones would be tough, respect for making it through. The idea with the animals (like the cow) was that they would eat things that hhad been contaminated by the radioactive dust thrown up by the burning reactor. If they escaped the exclusion zone, they could spread the contamination further. That cow would have eaten the grass which would have been coated in dust, which then poison it's milk. A horrible job for the "liquidators" for sure. A lot of credit gets given to those that gave their lives, but I think some of them also gave their souls to protect others, doing that grisly work. For those that were evacuated, they technically could have taken things like clothes etc, stuff that was inside would be unlikely to have any of the dust on them. Only problem was that they weren't told they were never going to come back to Pripyat - supposedly it was a "temporary relocation" only - so most of them only took the bare essentials. Do you remember when Legasov asked for a glass at the bar that was turned upside down? He was trying to avoid a glass that dust might have settled in. It's also the reason the firefighter's clothing is still dangerous, it was coated in radioactive particles from the smoke. The series (deliberately) serves as a metaphor for the willful blindness and arrogance of those who would much rather ignore science-based warnings. It's really an excellent show, hard to believe it's only five episodes. The scene with Boris and Valery outside during the recess always gives me a lump in the throat. Both men becoming a little more like the other as the series goes on. Boris becomes more honorable and courageous - Valery becomes more pragmatic and less naive. As always, a great reaction - even if this one isn't exactly the most comfortable of shows. Thanks for watching and giving us your thoughts Jen! (And Banjo is super cute).

It'll be interesting to complete this show for a 2nd time. The science of how it happened is the part I'm most keen to listen to again. The other distressing stuff I'm not. As you asked about other shows based on real events. Two three part Mini Series Dramas based on actual events. One I'd commented before. •Des (Interview of serial killer Dennis Nilsen, chillingly portrayed by David Tennant.) •A Very English Scandal. (Hugh Grant's portrayal of the member of Parliament Jeremy Thorpe and the conspiracy he was involved in.

Daryl

I share your discomfort with the animal thing Jen. If episode 4 doesn’t upset you then you have no soul! There is a nuclear power plant in my town that’s in the process of being decommissioned. The plant stopped generating electricity about two years ago but it will take decades to fully power down and the property itself will be dangerous for centuries. Despite the potential danger nuclear power is actually quite safe though. Between the power plants and nuclear warships there are literally hundreds of reactors operating around the globe and in the 70 or so years since atomic energy was discovered there have only been three (that I can recall) significant incidents; Chernobyl being the most significant by a wide margin.
