Planet of the Apes (1968) Full Length Reaction

Comments

I have watched this movie a zillion times. So glad you reacted to it. (I also like the latest trilogy.) "Our first Article of Faith tells us that the Almighty created the Ape in his own image; that he gave him a soul and a mind; that he set him apart from all the beasts of the jungle, and made him lord of the planet. These sacred truths are self-evident." "Consider the Sacred Scrolls ... the Thirteenth Scroll, which says: 'And Proteus brought the upright beast [man] into the garden and chained him to a tree and the children did make sport of him'." "Let me conclude with the words of the greatest Ape of all, our Lawgiver, in the 29th Scroll, sixth verse: 'Beware the beast Man, for he is the Devil's pawn. Alone among God's primates, he kills for sport or lust or greed. Yea, he will murder his brother to possess his brother's land. Let him not breed in great numbers, for he will make a desert of his home and yours. Shun him; drive him back into his jungle lair, for he is the harbinger of death'."

There is only one really weak one in the whole bunch of originals and that's the last one...but due to lowering budgets each film..one got really creative with budget and is one of the best..the recent remakes with James Franco in the first are excellent.

I know people will want you to watch the old Ape movies before seeing the new ones, and I am normally a die-hard completionist/release-order-fanatic, but my view here is this : if you stop here (for now) and go straight to the new series (ignoring the existence of the 2001 remake), the new "reboot" trilogy actually can serve as a prequel to this movie thanks to a couple of references in the first of the reboot trilogy. Then, go back and watch the rest of the old movies for the old school take on a different future/history for the original Planet of the Apes. Or, just watch the original movies like people say and then take the new trilogy as a completely stand-alone new version with a ton of references to the original.

Lol you know I appreciate the no spoilers!! So glad you enjoyed Daryl :)

Blimey, been a long while since I last saw this classic. I remember making my through some of the sequels, but I don't think I ever watched them all. So I would be happy to revisit them again and complete the run. I also never finished the latest trilogy, so that would be good when we get to them. I'm not sure if this was a hint placed in the story or if it was just an unintentional anachronism that got over looked. They used what looked like a pressure hose on Taylor and Nova. Was this there to suggest that their society was based on an previously more advanced one? Because I wouldn't have thought they would likely have developed such equipment based on their apparent state of development. That was the only thing that stood out to me in that regard. Now I could just be wrong and it was in keeping. Or perhaps it was intended, which I hope so, cuz I do love clues placed in a story. Glad you hadn't had the ending ruined for you. As others have said, it's one of those famous endings in film. I almost wanna give other examples, but then you'd know they have a surprise at the end, which would kinda defeat the purpose I guess. So best I 🤐

Daryl

Ya I can see that, though the imagery of it upright is stunning. Since we dont see the bottom I kind of assumed the top half had broken off, maybe even floated up onto the beach, but I guess ya it probably wouldn't be upright

Jen M

When I first saw the surprise ending to this movie, my first thought was something like, "How did New York Harbor get covered with so much sand?" The Statue of Liberty looked weather-beaten, certainly, but it was definitely intact and seemed to be standing perfectly upright. If I had been the director and I wanted to convey an image of New York City after a nuclear war, I would have had the Statue appear more severely damaged and would have had the surviving portion jutting out of the sand at an angle or maybe even positioned face-down in the sand.

John Walters

I would like to see react to all five original Ape movies before you watch the reboot movies.

Lee Pitman

Definitely would like to see the sequels!

Jen M

I'd definitely love to see your reactions to sequels. I pretty like all of them to differing degrees but still like them (or at least remember them fondly). (Maybe some rose-colored glasses here I will admit though.) The only sequel I don't have any strong memories of is the last one (#5: Battle for the Planet of the Apes).

Ron

That's right! Hopefully now I'll recognize him if I see him!

Jen M

Oh my goodness that's right. Well at least now I'll know him if I see him in a cameo!

Jen M

Actually the third time you saw Charlton Heston, he had two scenes in True Lies as the eye patch wearing boss.

Andrew Roach

Oh you're right, I forgot about True Lies!

Paul G

Third. He also played Spencer Trillby. Omega Sector's head in "True Lies".

Miles E Coburn

I'm SO glad I didn't know, I got the tip to avoid looking up anything, even posters, before I saw it. It's crazy they put the spoiler right on the poster!

Jen M

Oh yes, true!!!

Jen M

Wow, it's great to see someone that didn't know the ending to Planet of the Apes. Sometimes DVD covers, posters, etc. have the Statue right on the cover, spoiling it. It's very annoying. So glad you didn't know the twist until the end. It's probably one of the most famous twist endings in movie history.

Negative

The surprise ending of this movie was spoiled for me before I had seen it but despite that it’s still a great flick. It keeps you on the edge the whole time! Jen, quick note about Charlton Heston, this is technically the second film you’ve seen with him in it. He actually had a very small cameo role in Tombstone as Henry Hooker, the owner of the ranch Wyatt and Doc rest at before the final shootout with Ringo.

Paul G

I say work your way through. These are my long time favorites! There is so much story here. So glad you enjoyed it. Will be watching it tonight!
