Rain Man (1988) Full Length Reaction

🏆WINNER of the 80's Drama Poll!🏆

I was so happy to see this movie win the 80's Drama Poll, it's been on my must-watch list for so long and it did not disappoint!

I really loved a lot about this movie! The acting was phenomenal, especially Dustin Hoffman as Raymond of course but Tom Cruise was great as well as Charlie Babbit and showed a range throughout the film as his character slowly grew more sensitive and patient. I also liked the girl who played Charlie's girlfriend, I thought she was lovely and subtle and had great chemistry with both Charlie and Raymond.

So many small moments made this film great. My two favourites were: when Charlie found out that Raymond was the "Rain Man" from his childhood; and at the end when Raymond leans his head on Charlie's head and they have such a tender moment together, with that gesture saying more than words ever could.

This really was a touching story of brothers on a road trip together but with the added layer of Raymond's autism and Charlie's journey to understand him better-- and in doing so to understand himself better! I was so happy to see Charlie's character arc resolve with his putting Raymond's needs above his own. And happy to see Raymond being valued for the sweet, gentle soul he is by those around him.

Thanks to those of you who recommended this to me and for voting in the poll. All the movies from that poll that didn't win we will circle back to again because I do want to see them all!

Thanks for watching with me and for your awesome support :)

Thanks Gary! I haven't seen that but will definitely add it to a poll 👍 Would love to see more movies with Dustin Hoffman

I don't know if you've seen Kramer vs. Kramer, but considering how touched you were by this movie, I would highly recommend you giving that a watch as well. It's another Dustin Hoffman family drama, and it's really--in my opinion--one of the best dramas ever made. Either way, this was a great reaction!

I'd not watched this film in a quite a few years before tonight. It's one of my all time favourites. Probably my favourite Tom Cruise film. Having just watched The Samurai, I can now comfortably say that. Both are absolutely fantastic, but this one just pips the top spot for me. It was an important step in bringing autism awareness to a larger audience. I've seen more stuff in recent years that have made further strides. The Netflix series Atypical is one I can think off the top of my head. Another film that comes to mind is •Mercury Rising. But that's more of an action thriller. Although I remember it to be highly entertaining, it's not in the same league as this masterpiece. That one emotional payoff with Charlie and Raymond only works as well as it does, because Charlie is such a unlikeable person in the beginning. That's a credit to Tom's performance for this. But I have seen him do this sort of role a fair bit now. That slightly obnoxious smug douche. Usually with either varrying levels of boyish charm, or someone who's more stoic with that teflon coated persona that he adopts for his current trend of action roles. Depending on the decade he made the film. It feels like his bread and butter, it's is go to performance. I'd say the films •A Few Good Men and •Collateral come in third and forth for my personal picks. This one is a story of character redemption. It's a road movie. A buddy movie. All facets that I enjoy. Which made me think about the film •Twins as I was watching. Another 80's classic!
