Shoegaze Chords For That 2010's Sound
Added 2022-06-11 19:21:24 +0000 UTCHey everyone, here's a chord progression that I've attempted to write in the sound of early 2010's Shoegaze music. Below are some techniques that I used in the composition.
1) Heavy usage of Maj7 chords built off of 1-4 in the diatonic scale
2) Preference towards Maj7 shapes that begin with a drop 2 structure (1-5-7)
3) The voicings are usually built on the lowest 3 strings
4) Octave / range is used to help give the chords more millage. For example, you can take any of the shapes in this PDF and move them up an octave to get a different sound
5) The most prevalent chord progression goes from 4-1, or 1-4. If there are other chords, this progression serves as the "skeleton". Other chords can surround these, but they serve as a general framework / building block.
6) If other chords are introduced, they are usually pretty close to the starting chord. For example, you might hear a shift from a Cmaj7 to a C5 power chord. Subtle changes help give a sense of development.
7) Another popular chord to use is the vi minor chord. Other voicings that you might hear too include sus2 chords, minor shell voicings, and power chords.
