My DIY rendering rig

Comments

I would never advice anyone to get into debt, what’s best to do depends on everyones unique situation of course. I personally did in fact take a loan on the computer, spending 15k euro in one shot isn’t something I’d be happy to do. In my case I needed the machine to be able to render a series of animations for a client in time as it was a rush. I charged for rendering time and the money from that job easily covered the computer. However I chose not to pay the loan back once the work was complete. Yes I’ll have to pay some extra interest since I keep the loan, but it also means that I’m spreading the cost out over a year instead of wasting every penny right away. It means that I’ll for sure have better liquidity in the company and I’m happy to pay the interest on the loan in exchange to keep more money on my bank account to be used if needed. In case I wouldn’t get more incoming money for the next month, that computer wouldn’t do me any good but having the money on the bank certainly does. Loans aren’t all bad :-)

Im not sure my question will make a lot of sense, but here goes :) So what are your thoughts about spending money on getting a high rig, over saving up for one over the course of a series of paid jobs? Would you see it as a way of enabling you to get better jobs and consequently get the rig, using savings or a loan etc first? I know the question is a bit spurious but im wondering where you see it, priority wise etc, if you know what i mean ;)

Yeah, I was googling for every possible solution and I spent a whole day before giving up and simply removing the fourth GPU. It annoys me to hell, but what to do. Maybe sometime I'll give it another shot but I just wanted to get it running to resume work :P

Oh I really wish I could talk more about this, but honestly this is beyond my expertize. I used to calibrate my Eizo monitor but I always got problem after calibration. Colors in windows didn't match the colors in photoshop, and that in turn didn't match what I saw in browsers so after my so called "calibration", I had no idea what to look at anymore. So since then I actually haven't calibrated my monitors. Instead I usually use my iPad to determine if I like the colors or not since the iPad is way more reliable than most desktop screens.

Hey brother, know that you've got a lot of answers to give, but, quick question: Monitors and calibration. What colour profile do you usually use, and how do you properly calibrate your monitors? (not sure if theres a topic about it already here on patreon) Big Hug.

Did you tried changing in the BIOS the pcie from auto (or gen4) to gen3? I might be wrong but I think there aren't many risers for pcie 4.0 in the market and your motherboard might be acting weird with the rtx 3090. You probably didn't had any issues with the 2080 ti because they're gen3.

I think so too. Was talking to Jeff Mottle and even he reacted on how much people are talking about burn-outs these days. Regarding the rig: I'll make a new post about it. :-)

I think you're perfectly right. I'd be more than happy to make a recorded chat about it. LMK if you're interested :-)

I'd also want to know how do you make the connection. Thanks

I think mental illness will be a great topic, and think it's touching a lot of people actually, not just in our industry. And sometimes I think we don't see this, some people keep this inside an one day blow up everything. Could you put all your Rig material on a text'message, please?

so how are you connecting to the machine through the wall? Long cables?

Mental illness in 3D is really big topic, didn’t expect that you will touch it..., «illness» is not the perfect word, I would say, as it’s more from psychiatry, I guess (or possibly this word just has more particular and narrow meaning in my language). But «creative and professional burnout» is definitely what’s a lot of us gone through (or possibly it’s just I feel that way). It would be really great to hear your thoughts about it and honor share few mine.

Wow that is a dream rig
