Question

Today I’m doing the 3rd re-recording of the connecter video. I just haven’t felt happy with it since I want to give a pretty much complete rundown of connecter but quite frankly I don’t use all of the features myself, so it’s hard to cover things I’m not very familiar with. However I’ve strucutured it up better now and I hope it can be useful for some of you.

Also there will be a model giveaway from DesignConnected, as well as a 20% coupon code, sponsored by the great team behind Connecter. I’m hoping to upload this tonight, or tomorrow (haven’t got the coupon code yet). That model that is given away to you all for free, I’ll use to make a small project I’ve planned. I want that project to also involve some texture scanning, just have to fix some things with my “rig”.

Now a question for you.

I know some people have asked me to do “reviews” of their images here on Patreon. Before I haven’t really wanted to do that, partly because of my Swedish modesty making it hard to comment on other peoples work as I know that I may not always be right. But mostly because it’s hard to just telling someone how they could improve on something, without having seen anything of the scene or how it’s set up. Also, I know everyone works differently and my workflows may not apply well on other artists.

So I have a similar idea I’d be willing to try if you’re interested. Basically if any one of you would send me a scene you’d want me to review, and I could record when I open it up, trying to understand how it’s made and then do my own thing with it. Not necessarily trying to improve your work, but rather similar to if I’d get a scene from a client that I would set up.

If you’d be interested in it, we’d do it like this:

Of you would be interested in this, I could give you a dropbox link to which you could upload an archived scene package or if you’d want to upload it somewhere else where I can reach it.

Let me know what you think about this idea. If it’s something you’d be interested in seeing and doing.

Comments

I have sent you a message to your inbox. If you are interested please let me know. :)

Awesome, happy to hear you like the idea :-) I have only gotten one scene so far!

That's a nice idea, I love simplicity. That example may be hard to comment on as it doesn't really contain anything, but I'm open to look at anything you throw at me :)

Sure, it's obviously much harder to give suggestions of improvements when I can't see how things are done etc, but I wouldn't mind just reviewing images as well. Just bare in mind that my opinions may not always be the "correct" opinions. :-)

I would love those kind of videos, and I'm going to send you multiple scenes ASAP, so you can choose one you like the most. :)

Thats the link of the project I took as inspiration so you can see what kind of scene/image I mean =)

What about a set of simple scenes? I did one some weeks ago and it was just about one image. Quick evening scene. So my thought about this is, Id also like to get reviews for our images only, but as Johannes would rather prepare some scenes, it might be easier for him getting some simple scenes and improve the lighting getting some more scenes done rather then also redoing all the models and materials on objects in a complex scene? https://atelierordinaire.tumblr.com/post/157568364409

I have the same thoughts Dany Izquierdo and Jonathan Nicholson and my vote as Light / Materials / HDRI / FS Parameters setting of the "Concrete Texture Scan" project. If you show it in a good way, I promise to buy FS and dedicate myself to a study scene and send it to you! Come on JL, big hug!

These are some interesting ideas Johannes! I like the idea of reviews and understand your whole point about it being difficult to comment on other people's work but it sounds like it's worth a try. For the those of us that work in programs other than 3DS Max (Blender, sketchup etc), would you still be interested in reviewing images of people's work? As in people would just send you a few jpgs of a finished scene for you to give your thoughts on. Even though you wouldn't be able to inspect and manipulate a scene file, I think it'd still be valuable to get your opinion on things like lighting, composition, materials etc. Even just a simple yes/no on whether the finished image looks photorealistic. Thanks!

Hi Johannes nice idea!! do you need a scene with textures or just the model?

I honestly don’t mind the repetitiveness! Even better if it’s easier for you. It’s what I love seeing—the process overall for archviz related stuff. I hope to learn more and more from just watching you do the same haha. thank you for the reply!

Id be interested to see this. I love picking apart others scene files to see how they do things.

Seconding what Dany said. The videos I rewatch the most are the ones where you are setting up lighting, and then choosing final camera compositions :)

Dany, thank you for that input. I actually love doing those videos the most and it's easier for me to produce that kind of content with tighter intervals. However I've been a bit afraid of being repetitive and I have noticed it's getting harder and harder to make new content videos, so I do really appreciate this message :)

I’m always curious, as simple as it is, just to see your workflow with lighting. I realize it may just be an hdri most of the time, but seeing the process of the image coming to life is something that really interests me always, no matter how repetitive it is. You always end up learning something new, be it camera setups, texturing...etc. For example, I love the latest set of images you posted on your IG of the Allen Key House and would love to see the process from those images. Also, just seeing how you were able to texture the walls and everything else would be something enjoyable to see. Hopefully we can see something like the old stuff you used to post! I really enjoyed those videos overall, once again I don’t mind the repetitive nature of them! :)

Awesome. If someone would want to send me a scene, a dropbox or wetransfer link or similar in Private messages here on Patreon, or to my email hej@johannesl.se. If you’d like to submit it to me anonymously, just send the scene to my email via wetransfer and enter a fake email adress in wetransfer.

Very good idea! Looking forward to this!

intresting~

Ok, I look forward to your re-remodeling of a scene, I will send you the past, thank you

Sound really good 🥂

I have an exterior project planned for Patreon, I’ve collected reference images and stuff. The reason why I haven’t been focusing on exterior work is because I’m simply no exterior artist. I’ve always preferred to focus my development specializing on one thing really well, rather than doing everything half well. However even though I can’t guarantee making a good job on an exterior scene, I would of course don’t mind trying :-)

Sure sire its good. I have been wanting you to do exterior recording. But since you are always on interiors I have gotten d moral to ask you about exterior visualization. But with the above I can send u an exterior scene so I and other artists who mostly do exteriors can see how we can improve. I always dissatisfied with my exterior jobs. Sire I will love it if u choose. Then I will send a duplex so u can visualise it. Thanks
