Just adding my British coworker would regularly confuse me asking what I brought for dinner at our lunch break lol. And other comments hawk similar things but if you know it often confuses you you should be clarifying. Where I live now people use “next” like “let’s do this next Monday” differently than where I come from; same with what counts as “half” when referring to the time. So now I just always clarify and ta da, plans are kept and no one gets hurt lol

"Hey, guys let's wait for my wife to start the game".
*Turns to cousin*
"hey man while we wait for my wife why don't you rush out to the gas station and buy $30 of scratch off lottery tickets or something so you can also play. I'm sure Grandma has wrapping paper or a gift back somewhere."

Why is this man in the last story acting like the only access he has to this friend is when his friend is visiting his family for the holidays…. If they are good enough friends you would think some effort would be made throughout the year. Men are lazy friends

Okay, I have to hear more about the fish 🐟 biting Justin’s back! What kind of fish, and why would they bite him, it’s not adding up. Haha
I have never heard of the dice game, looking it up now. This year at the office holiday party white elephant game the gifts I opened were stolen 4 times. It’s was so awkward to have to keep walking up to the front and open another. But alcohol were the big hit items, case of beer, moonshine, and a bottle of Jack Daniel’s.

Thought on blankets for Christmas: have you ever purchased a fire blanket for any white elephant?! It’s silly and also great for safety! And it could be fought over! Could always pair it with a nice adult beverage too!

hi mainer here! lunch is often referred to as dinner with older generations here. my grandparents always called lunch dinner, so i think it’s maybe an older new englander thing?? idk if it’s prevalent elsewhere too tho!

I would be soooo upset if my husband left me and my small children on Christmas. It would be a non-negotiable in my opinion. I can’t even imagine my husband trying to leave me… also I’m impressed the kids will nap on Christmas.

Everyone ends with a gift, everyone had at least 1 opportunity to steal. The person with the least flexibility is Person 2 because they are blindly choosing from the pile or they only have 1 gift as a stealing option (person 1’s gift). Whereas person 3 could steal from Person 1 or 2 so they have more stealing options. And if no one steals Gift 2 from Person 2 then Person 2 never has a 2nd option to steal a gift after (presumably) more people have opened gifts.

The way we play white elephant is everyone brings a gift. If there’s 15 people then we write numbers 1-15 on a pieces of paper and put them in a hat. Everyone picks a number. Whoever is #1 goes to the pile of presents and picks one, then opens it. Next #2 goes and can either pick an unopened gift or steal Person #1’s gift, and then we continue to Person 3, etc. For example, if Person 7 decides to steal Person 2’s gift, then Person 2 can either pick a new gift from the pile or steal an existing gift (that person 1-6 has), but obvs not steal back the gift that person 7 stole from them bc that would negate person 7’s turn. Our only rule is that a gift can’t be stolen more than twice (opened once, stolen once, stolen twice, now with that owner permanently). And after all 15 people have gone, we let Person 1 have the option to keep their gift or steal a gift because as the 1st person their only initial option was to open a gift and they never had the option to steal.

I’m sorry but NEEDING to see this friend on Christmas day is kinda crazy to me. This friend can’t stay an extra day? Like why is he only in this area ON Christmas Day? Moreover, it’s just him and the one friend? Not a friend group? Ngl but that is so weird to me. My mind goes to some…dark places. The husband seems to know that the wife probably doesn’t like the friend bc he was so vague about this Christmas meeting. Why can’t the friend come to stay with the family? They can 100% square off into a different room or anything. This feels like some weird “meet-up” the necessity to be alone and private is giving me some weird vibes.

With the first story, my family has switched to secret Santa a few years ago instead of getting gifts for everyone, especially because I have a big family and it has grown with SOs. Makes Christmas a lot less stressful. Also having a birthday on the 31st with my twin, allows me to focus on gift giving for her as well!

good ole classic reddit misogyny jumping out with all of them voting the wife the asshole in that final story. obviously context matters but at a very basic level, being married to and having children with someone and not telling that person your christmas plans until the day before is asshole behaviour. like, unless there are extreme circumstances that make such a thing necessary (at which point you probably should divorce), it really is just that simple.

Justin’s mom’s response is such a MIL red flag!!!! The husband should’ve mentioned it to his wife. He let his mom steam roll over her. Concerning Justin’s mom condoned that….

On the last story, I don’t see anyone mentioning if OP has an issue with the friend and doesn’t want to bring it up in the post. It kinda makes me wonder what kind of influence this friend is and that’s why the husband didn’t feel comfortable bringing it up at the meetings because she would have shut it down from the start because of the type of friend it is

I have similar feelings about the dice game but I think how we do it for our friend group would probably be a little better. We do a round where we go until all the gifts are taken (people will bring a few things) and then do 15 minutes of stealing. Then everyone unwraps. Its sometimes goofy things or a giant Toblerone. I gifted some of the left over wine from our wedding. Unfortunately the guy who took the large boxes doesn’t drink but we are allowed to to do trades.

The first story is definitely the bfs family using OP for presents, a couple of comments made later made it pretty clear that there is one, a pretty large income disparity, and two debt on the side of bfs family, and sounds like they use credit a lot. That’s why they throw so many parties, to get things to offset the cost of things needed.

Omg no I just finished the episode and he is MAJORLY the asshole. Didn’t mention these plans when they had a planning meeting??? Thought dinner meant lunch??? Is leaving her with children young enough that they still take a 2 hour nap during the day??? Even if they are sleeping if they’re that young he shouldn’t be leaving her! What if they wake up and need to be put back down? Absolutely no big asshole

I think the final story is written SO confusingly! But reading it myself it seems like the wife asked her husband a couple months ago how she could support his friendships and he said letting him see his friends when they are in town. THEN in the present he basically used that hypothetical conversation to be like “you agreed months ago you’d let me see them!!” When he never specifically said he would be seeing friends on Christmas
