Introducing Our Babies and Toddlers

Alice, Chloé, Léa and I are very excited to finally show you what we’ve been working on for the past month: babies and toddlers! This post concerns the visuals of babies and toddlers. Details regarding our plans for the gameplay related to them will come at a later time!
It was very wholesome to gather so many references of cute toddlers wearing adorable clothes and walking around all funny... Our work on the Parafolks is always very inspired by the talented Lesly Oh’s illustrations. Here’s the one she did to help us with the design of our toddler:

I could show you a lot of other adorable baby and toddler reference pics that helped us but I’m sure you care more about seeing the results so here are some screenshots:

Here’s a look at how children could look when growing up from babies to toddlers. How exciting is that? We still can’t confirm how aging will work or if it will be gradual though, stay tuned!
There are 2 different textures, one for the baby and one for the toddler. The two will share a lot of clothing with one another.
More hairstyles, clothes and facial presets will be available in the future, so you’ll be able to fully customize your babies and toddlers!
We hope you like how they look so far and that it fills your heart with cuteness!

2023-05-26 05:30:52 +0000 UTCOh my, I admire the crawling, it looks super complex :o I think babies should have bigger eyes and maybe smaller nose, also all babies have their nose a little "up" so they could breathe while breastfed so maybe that's something to work with :) But I am very excited ♥ The carpet is also super cute, btw ♥

Maybe spacing the eyes out slightly more and scaling them up a bit would work too, but that might just be a matter of different taste-I think I'd prefer them to fit with the art style over being overly cutesy! **Also editing to agree with the earlier comment about moving the nose up!!

2022-11-18 04:03:05 +0000 UTCI'm not sure about the look of their heads/faces right now, but definitely very exciting early draft and I love how it's going! <3 Whether aging is done gradually or in stages, I think gradual aging from baby to toddler is a good idea. It would allow babies to grow physically and grow mentally/socially/skill-wise at different rates. Essentially having a baby para model that grows bigger and more toddler-shaped over time regardless of milestones or skill progression. Some babies learn to walk and talk faster or slowers than others. Also if the newborn-->baby-->toddler progression was all technically 'one life stage' it gives the player more time to slow down and enjoy that part of the game, progressing their para's skills in any order or at any pace without worrying about "gotta get all the baby stuff done before they turn into a toddler in three days" and "why do I have to wait so long before I can teach you to crawl?"

Also I noticed with the baby crawling it seemed a bit too robotic? babies they kind of stomp with their feet if that makes sense, this feels a bit too smooth so I’d add that bit of heaviness to the animation. I think it would be cute when they’re just learning how to crawl to have them scoot more with their legs lol.

2022-11-12 21:11:15 +0000 UTCSomething extremely cool I noticed in the growing up gif: the child doesn't just get taller but it's body changes a lot too, losing some baby fat and taking on a more defined shape. (most visible in the lower jaw and neck/shoulder area) It isn't just the height slider at work but likely a variety of invisible sliders. That to me is an incredible achievement! I know gradual aging isn't confirmed at this stage but just think of how attached we will get to these characters watching them become a new version of themselves literally as each day passes.

I agree with some of the other comments about the actual baby and toddler being a little uncanny valley though. in direct comparison with the reference pic I'd say it's: the toddler's nose being a little too big, their eyelids not being slim enough, the very separated lashes (I think it's giving a bit of spider leg vibes), and the irises not being big enough (in Lesly's pic they take up much more of the eyes). tweaking the shading of mouth and cheeks probably will also help. if the baby's diaper was more.. round? like with more dimension and kinda more substantial? I think that would help a lot. and the current hair on the baby looks kind of painted on, like it's a doll, not a human baby. maybe having more distinct hair will also make it look more "realistic". of course this is a work in progress! I think overall they are looking awesome and fit the art style of the overall game very well. very much looking forward to seeing the same Parafolk in all different ages!! and seeing babies/toddlers with other skin tones would be great too!

One thing though, especially the baby in the crib, it almost looks like the neck is too thick instead of having "skinrolls" so to say? I dont know if that makes sense. But yes. Not that I don’t enjoy birthday’s but when the aging process occurs in an organic fashion then you see the nuance of change. As my real life children aged I watched as they shifted in looking like one relative after another until they finally settled into the adult they were to become. Fascinating really. Keep up the good work and thank you.☺️

I have to agree with other comments about the baby proportions, the crawling animation being robotic and the eyes are not quite right. I'm not what it is exactly, maybe the lashes? A more defined line and less individual lashes might help? Excited to see more, I love babies. If there is a baby at a family event, I am holding them 👶💜

I'm asking this because that other game (and most games that depict babies) tend to have a 'standard nappy' for all babies, can we have different nappy patterns to choose from (you know: ducks on one, chickens on another, cute dinosaurs, cute bears etc), and perhaps a choice of cloth nappies too for those who remember those? The nappy that you already have is already very, very cute! It would just add some diversity for those of us who play rotation between families.

The body (and playsuit onezie😫) is perfect, but something about the face (eyes?) is a bit off to me, the baby in particular. Then again babies can be really ugly to me irl too! LOL I know they are still in an early stage anyway though PS: I love the plant. Just really love plants and I need this one in my house too

2022-11-11 23:45:35 +0000 UTCit's probably the iris size + thickness of eye fold, if you look at a toddler's face compared to an adult you'll perceive the toddler's eyes as larger (and their eyelids as thinner) because compared to their little faces, it is! Fun fact the eye remains roughly the same size from 3 months onward!

As much as I love these new inclusions, I want to be honest for the sake of giving constructive feedback and the faces still need some work. I believe the eyes may need to be a bit bigger, but the main culprit is the nose - it's too big and too long down on the face. Cover the nose up with your finger and both baby and toddler instantly look more proportional and cute.

(the dancing baby gif gives me nightmares, though, but only if you've seen Ally McBeal do you understand why) I really love the animation in the crib. And the skin details of the baby fat rolls are fantastic (although to be fair I just like to see fat rolls in Paralives :P ). The crawling animation might need a couple of tweaks, as the baby doesn't seem to put any effort in seamlessly moving fast from one side of the screen to the other. Considering how chubby babies often are, not to mention their lack of coordination, I'd expect the movements to show some struggle and/or hesitation, particularly as far as the hands and back are concerned. But obviously, like everything in Paralives, it's going to get improved over time, I have no worry about that !

I did have some feedback on the appearance of the babies though: - In the gif with the baby lying down in the crib, for some reason the arms seem a little short. It might have just been the angle, but it looked like the hands ended right at the hip, instead of the upper thigh region. -In that same gif and this is more of a clarification question, but are the feet in that gif part of the final product or would that be the feet from the dancing baby gif? I would imagine the one from the dancing baby gif is closer to the final look as it looks better and more realistic, but I'm not entirely sure which came first and I really don't like those feet in the gif with the baby just lying in the crib. Overall toddlers and babies look/act amazing!! I can't wait to see more updates on this!

Question: will fat (and muscles ?) be customizable for babies or at least for toddlers? I'm asking because you said there will be a single skin texture for babies and another one for toddlers and I know skin texture plays a role in these settings for adults.

I absolutely adore the baby - the design is gorgeous and the little animations are so detailed. I really really hope gradual aging works out because that transition from baby to toddler is so exciting! In general I just love the idea of gradual aging so fingers crossed... ;) One little thing about the toddler though - it might just be me but there's something that seems a little off about its lower face: jawline, cheeks and mouth. I really can't quite put my finger on what it is, but it somehow doesn't quite seem to fully fit with the rest of the body (in my opinion). It might be that the lighting is a little bit strange there? There seems to be a white line across the face, at the mouth level. But yeah apart from that, just amazing! EDIT: Just was looking back at this again (because oh my god it's sooo cute) and I was wondering if maybe the slight 'off'-ness of the lower face might be due to a lack of shading and depth on the cheeks. I could be totally wrong about this! Obviously the toddlers have been given chubby cheeks, but there isn't as much shading on the cheeks - so instead of coming across as 'chubby' it can make the face seem a bit over-large and out of proportion. Maybe adding some highlights to the upper parts of the cheeks and darker shading to the lower curves of the cheek might help the face look 'chubby' rather than slightly out of proportion? Again, not an expert so I could be totally off the mark but just thought I'd mention!

Thrilled to see the baby crawling and basically going from baby to toddler, rather than just a baby that only sleeps, feeds, cries and needs diapers that suddenly turns into a toddler. Two minor things: the skin texture (or is it the shade?) looks a bit weird on the ribs on the crawling baby and the diaper seems a tad too high on baby for both belly button and leg/hip area. But they are so adorable and as someone who basically only plays huge families (rotating between different ones and different generations) I can't wait to get to discover all that you've come up with for these cute miniature paras!

The art style is definitely growing on me. :) I hope babies and toddlers will share the same (but accurately adjusted to their age) face presets so they can have a consistent look when growing up. One note: I'm using iOS app and gifs are playing for me with no problem!
