What We Did This Week + Genetics Info and Poll

Hi there! How are you doing?

Postcards are in the mail

Two days ago, we sent postcards to all the Patrons who were on the Hero and Legend tiers on August 1. That's almost 500 postcards to write and sign! It was a really fun thing to prepare and we can't wait for you to see the original artwork Léa made for it. Tell us in the comments below if you already received yours! It might take a few weeks for you to get it depending on where you are in the world. Also, feel free to share your postcards on social media, if you want :)

Christine has completed her internship

When Christine joined us at the start of the summer, it was for a 4 months part time internship. It just came to an end and we really love having her with us on the team so she is now a full time employee! We're so happy about that! Recently, Christine worked on preparing the postcards, improving our Steam page (new description and banners), compiling the answers to the LGBTQIA+ diversity survey and more.

Character improvements

We collected a lot of feedback following the reveal of Maggie and Sebastian so this week, Alice and Léa worked on some improvements. This includes tweaking different proportions of the body, improving the shapes and making our character model easier to animate. For instance, one of the change Léa made this week is improving the hands. As some people mentioned, the hands (and feet) were a bit too small and also, the shape and proportions were off. We'll keep improving more character related stuff, thanks everyone for all the feedback!

Also, since Alice, our animator, joined us recently, we are designing the tools that modders will be able to use to integrate their own animations into Paralives. The goal is to let people replace existing animations or add new ones and share them on Steam Workshop for everyone to easily download. That should be pretty fun and I'm looking forward to see what people will do with it!

Build mode improvements

Jérémie is working on improving the build tools in preparation of the integration of the basement and terrain tools. Once we have that, we will be able to showcase complete house building videos. So it's going smoothly so far and we're really excited about the build mode!

Genetics system

As you may know, Anna is a huge science nerd so she's working on the genetics system for Paralives! Here's what she had to say about what she's working on:

The genetics system will include the possibility of linking genotypes to phenotypes, and defining levels of dominance, which means some traits may "skip" a generation. (hey! I'm looking at you, Punnet square geeks!)Take a look at this example below, illustrating the eye color case.

Eye color is defined by two main genes, HERC2 and gey, which both have two alleles (i.e., two possible versions of each gene). A person always get two versions for each gene, one being inherited from each of their biological parents. As a parent also has two versions of each gene, kids will get one or the other randomly. That's why you don't always have the same eye or hair color than your siblings!

Now, the table at the right shows the resulting phenotypes (how your eyes look like) depending on the possible combinations of the versions you get from your parents. We can say that the "brown eyes" phenotype is more dominant that the "green eyes" phenotype, which is more dominant than the "blue eyes" phenotype ; one "B" allele takes over all the other alleles and makes your eyes brown, whatever the other are!
On the left is an example of a possible family tree, which shows that a trait can stay "hidden" for many generations!

Reference: https://genetics.thetech.org/ask/ask316

This genetic system will be moddable, which means you will be able to create your own custom genes for custom traits if you'd like, or modify the existing genetics rules.
Also, the color you choose on the color wheel will be automatically considered as the closest color among the existing preset ones.

More information and explanations on genetics will come later, stay tuned!

But for now, we'd like to have your opinion on something: would you like the unnatural colors to be part of the basic genetic system (your blue hair Paras would pass their blue hair to their kids), or still differentiate the genetics from the "cosmetic" aspects of the Paras?  In any case, there will probably be a setting or cheat for that but tell us what you would prefer by voting in the poll below! Also, in the comments, feel free tell us about features related to genetics you would like to see in Paralives!

Edit: "Unnatural hair color" means colors that are not usually seen in human, like blue or pink hair! There will be an advanced DNA panel accessible from the Paramaker that will allow you to "unlink" your genes from your hair (like if you want your Para to have brunette hair genes, but you want to dye her hair blond)

That's it for today! Take care everyone :)

Alex and the team

Comments

I'm torn. There are times I like my character's natural hair colors to be the unnatural colors lol. Like I may want a Para with naturally purple hair who may dye it brown or blond.

Kymberlee86

I really think dying hair should be an option and so for example if someone wants to die their hair blonde even though they're naturally brown/grey haired, it doesn't get passed to their children as a genetic trait.

I currently have colored hair and in other games, I love when the children inherit it! Makes me feel like I'm playing with fanastys. But there are times when I don't want that trait to be passed down, say for example the rebel of the family. What if there was an option when creating your para to say if that color is inheritable? Or something along the lines of that?

I'd like to make unusual colours the natural hair of some Parafolk n let them be inheritable. Eg. Pink haired Para (pixie, fairie ? Maybe in later games) having a dark pink (brown haired partner)/pink haired kid , but if they die their hair it doesn't pass. Eg. Pink haired Para dyes their hair blue, but next child is still pink/dark pink/brown. But it's be nice if it was optional, for freedom of gameplay

Bohnita Roy Choudhury

wow! I’m a huge biology nerd and this makes me so excited!

julimander

I would love to have the option ingame to choose between the two systems. Both sound great.

It would be nice if their was a distinction between "natural" hair and "dyed" hair. Even if the character changes to a new hair colour that is "natural" but dyed also.

CBaker

As long as genetic hair color and dyed hair color are separated, unnatural hair color should be inheritable if it's set to genetic instead of dyed. Because if people want to make anime characters and such, that's the logic there, they're born with such hair.

I personally hate how custom hair colors are inheritable in the sims.

Meko

Maybe make it an option in game?

Halley Gearhart

I would like for physical appearance to be genetic as well! Like certain facial features or how the body is built. Aka if the parents both, or one of them, have really thick thighs, the kid may get it as well. What would also be really cool, is if traits were inherited as well! These would be able to be changed but like maybe, when the kid is born (or ages up), they get suggested a trait/traits that were passed down by their parents and it’s your choice if you want to use them or not (or maybe this could be toggled/checked on/off. :)

Anna Wendel

There should be hand sliders because I have short and stubby hands and they look like how Maggie's hands originally looked

Mary Breyer

Cela reste un principe de génétique très théorique, ne peut on pas insérer une part d'aléatoire?

My sister is basically a home schooled genius when it comes to horse genetics. I could ask her to apply for a job with them xDD

Desirée Eriksson

Maybe you can "tag" a hair color as genetic *if* you want to? Because I know some people (me included) like to play with paranormal or custom "races", like faeries or aliens etc. It might be more complicated to code, but it also allows people to play the game they want to play it.

Desirée Eriksson

amen to that

eloeden

I'd love for the genetics to be more related to the genetic line/tree. So super naturals obviously have "unnatural" colours suiting to the species that pass on, however, mortal/average humans pass on simply natural traits.

El Susano-o

I personally prefer unnatural things to remain custom. I've coloured my hair many colours and love the option to have that on the characters, but I'd love it if it was treated as a dye. I'd love for the game to skew towards simulating real life and for a lot of solid basics to be present in the initial game. For more "out there" things (example supernaturals) to be an optional DLC. Just the opinion of one life sim fan though. :)

Ilona

I was so excited to receive my postcard today!! I'm all the way in New Zealand so was surprised it arrived a lot sooner than I had expected! I love my card! You guys are doing A-MA-ZING and its an absolute pleasure supporting you through the development process 🖤🖤

Maybe for stretch goals there can be some occult stuff added, like ghosts and aliens, or maybe castle/ palace/ secret passage building stuff. Or maybe you can make some places that are planned to be rabbitholes full buildings?

IdrilPuck

Can you add hazel eyes, amber eyes and grey eyes

Love the customization mentioned in the Advanced DNA panel! I really like the option to link/unlink certain traits. What would improve that even more is the ability to setup a kind of individually made “preset” with all the genetic info and stuff that you like to play with, with different options you can build as a kind of quickstart to the rules you’d like to play with :)

Nightshade Nova

I think the option would be perfect. Because sometimes you want the kid to have that color and others you don’t. But whenever I make a sim I want to have hair like that the kids always have normal hair. It’s something I’ve missed from previous games so much!

Sable Szczeklik-Silvius

Also give us the option to have each eye be a different color!

The Noobest Girl

I like that idea! It's like having 2 layers where the bottom natural is inherent but if you choose to color the hair on top of that it's dominant in the sense that it's showing but it's not inherent.

The Noobest Girl

Hope you see this : It would be cool if the same genes systems will be implemented in the pets too, although I can see that being rather complex because there are a lot of breeds in every category (dogs, cats, horses). Either way, at least make the color genes for pets like they are irl. Idk much about cats and dogs (apart from that calico cats are always females), but I do have some knowledge in horse colorings and can advise you on those.

The Noobest Girl

Basement and terrain tools!? 😱. A complete house build!? Oh wow, very exciting.

Joralyd

I got mine and OMG it's adorable! Thank you so much! So excited to sponsor this amazing project.

Yeah me too, its beautiful the art of Léa.

Cláudio Costa

I am in need of an upate. Just a short video clip anything. This is what happens when you binge watch everything Paralives!!🙋🏾💻

Miesha Smith

I got mine today! Thank you so much ☺️☺️

Not sure how difficult this would be, but making the hair's root colour the genetics would be cool

I think that options like a on/off toggle in settings are a good compromise to any gameplay aspect. That way it isn't forcing players to use a feature, and it's not stopping you from having that option!

Yay I can’t wait for my postcard 😍😍😍

Laura Vanrooy

Maybe there could be an option in settings to turn on inheritable unnatural colors? (:

Jenny Heller

I think for hair color it can be a choise in setting ?

Léa Bourreau

I got my postcard! Thank you so much! ❤

I just thought about glitches in Paralives 😱😱😱

My post is coming today, what a historic moment! xoxo

Simday1

Everybody want all colours. They simply want the realism of paras not inherit blue hair. No human has blue hair naturally. It has nothing to do with not including someone.

Please can you share it on Discord and use #postcard so that the Devs can find it?

Bianca J

Hâte de voir tout cela

Ludivine

Moment of appreciation for the continued transparency of this family

NaJa Jackson

I GOT MY POSTCARD, I SUPER LOVE, THANK YOU ♥️😍

If there was an option to set a base colour that is their natural hair colour, and we can set it for any kind of hair colour we want, say their natural hair is pink. And then if we decide a dyed hair colour for them, say brown. their natural hair (pink) would be passed down instead of brown(dyed)

MARVIN RED BJD

I would like to simply have a check box when you set the hair/eye/skin color to set whether it's the Para's natural color, and if that's checked then the color would be heritable. You could go with "closest preset color determines where it falls in the dominance order" by default, but also have a button that opens a UI interface that lets you customize that order on the spot. When I play Sims I like to give my family founder weird genetic colors and see how many of them survive the generations; I'd prefer not to have to do a lot of work to do this in Paralives.

Aaryn Goodwin

I agree!!

Bethany

I think it would be nice to have the 'Unnatural inherited colors' as an option in the settings (as you stated) But for the game to be first set to only natural colors being inherited :)

Only natural colors, this is a 'life simulation' game after all, it would kill the immersion for me if tonns of people randomly walked around with green hair and purple eyes. Having it unnatural colors in genetics would be great as a cheat or feature you can turn on though, for the off-time that you decide to set up an alien world or scy-fi steampunk universe or whatever.

Maddalena Segato

It kinda ruins it for me if my kid is born with green hair... Let it be something you can turn on or off at least.

I selected all hair collours, because i would prefer to have the option to select a para's 'natural' Hair color, but also dye it later in whatever colour they want. That way, you could inherit whatever colour you want. However, if tht would mean townies could Spawn with the most crazy unnatural haircolorous as their 'natural' hair, i would much rather prefer only 'natural' colours to be inheritable.

A thought that came to me yesterday was that it'd be cool if some paras could have a special gene or trait to have some paras who are in the middle aged to elderly age range to age slower than others probably would. Like they'd not look their age compared to other paras in that age range. Or Maybe it could be a trait they could acquire or it could be a random genetic gene given that you'd have to pick in paramaker.

S&M Gonzalez

considering how everyone on the patreon has been banging on about inclusion etc, i’m surprised that the majority do not want all colours included in the genes..

Perhaps when we create the para we can have a section where we pick their "natural hair colour" and then the normal hair colour creator section. That way if people want a para with naturally green hair, then they create the hair ant it's dyed red, their offspring can inherent green hair.

I like making fantasy characters like elves, so I want more creative color options for genetics, same for making anime characters

IdrilPuck

Maybe the differentiation shouldn't be between "natural" & "unnatural" but the colour a character is born with vs what they change it to later in life, ie what is THAT para's "natural" colour, even if that is bright purple.

Morgan LF

Quoting from the post : "Also, the color you choose on the color wheel will be automatically considered as the closest color among the existing preset ones."

moonlightsimmer

I hope there is an option to have genetic green, blue, purple hair because that's how I like my characters to look on TS3

AyLaHa

Would prefer only natural colours being inhertiable but how would that work with the colour wheel?

Nicole Penny

I think I'd want different rules for hair and eyes. I find normal that eye color, regardless of rarity, could be passed on. But hair should prioritize natural colors. Blue hair are a dyed color (cosmetic change that has no impact on genes), while purple eyes are a rare genetic mutation (and will most likely be recessive). There's a difference to me. Then again that'd be only the default genetic model, but if we can customize our own genetic rules, then as long as I can customize eyes and hair separately, it doesn't matter what the default is.

ladyteruki

I voted unnatural to be allowed, too, since there are 'unnatural colorings that happen in real nature, such as people who have 2 different eye colors and people who are albino with pink eyes, as example. I believe nature is capable of many different colorings which could easily be labeled 'unnatural.

tey711

But ideally you should be able to change their genetic hair colour as well, even if it's with a "special unlock", like fullcasedit in Sims.

CheckerDuck

I love the idea of being able to "unlink" inheritable colours, so one para could have blue hair as hereditary, and another could have naturally brown hair but is dyeing it blonde or pink, but its children will get the natural brown hair.

CheckerDuck

I don't want pink or blue hair in my game. Can we have the option to block unnatural colors when we start our game?

KittyPara

Thanks Alex and the team for improving the hands ! they are much better now :)

KittyPara

I always like life simulation because of aspects like this like I want my para to have natural pink or blue hair they can pass down to their kids it just makes things more fun for me

Yessss

whenever i play sims i immediately have to edit the kids hair bc they come out with the moms “dyed” pink hair. maybe an option to choose “natural hair color” and “dyed hair color” kind of like how in sims you can choose to set the eyebrow color to match hair or not

My ideal: all Parafolk have a birth hair colour, can be natural or unnatural colour. This is what they pass on genetically. When Parafolk change their hair it doesn't change their base genetic hair colour, it's purely cosmetic.

By default I want it to be natural colors only, but there should be options to have it be inherited, both for whole neighborhoods AND for individual paras. Maybe I want to make one magical Para that has natural pink hair that is genetic, but don't want other paras to pass down their hair dye. Maybe it would be easier to just pick the natural hair and dyed hair separately, and we can just choose ourselves which colors we consider natural and genetic or not. Similarly, maybe there could be contacts if we want to change eye color without changing genetics, and Costume makeup could change skin color without changing genetics. That way the chosen colors are just always genetic, and we choose something separate if we want to change colors without changing genetics. Easy to understand, and I'd think easier to implement as you won't have to figure out exceptions or decide what an unnatural color is or anything weird like that. And then we could also do things like dye paras hairs natural colors without it becoming genetic.

Aster Lea

Exited to see how it work.

Aaaaaah... I just remember being so disappointed when the Sims 4 didn't let my characters inheret their mom's purple hair. I'd love to do a challenge where I make all the NPCs crazy colors and see what happens with the world so I'd really like it to be genetic.

Only natural but of course Maybe a check so you can choose if a color can be inheritable. for the people who choose to have colored hair to be "Natural"

Unbentdime

I'm sorry this may be asking for too much since you wanted us to decide... but I just can't so I'll let others for it for me!

justyourfan

I'd love to vote but I really can't decide - my first though was "only natural" because it's more realistic. But then, I used to play a Targaryen legacy in Sims 3 where people had silver hair and purple eyes... then again in a realistic playthrough i wouldn't want my alternative teen mom to have a blue haired baby... is there a way to make it toggleable?

justyourfan

I really hope that dyeing of the hair is implemented... And in a realistic way like going to the salon. I really think that's something that is missing as of now in game development.

Bree

natural hair colours only as the default, but with a way to turn unnatural colours on in settings!

currently imagining paras getting roots because their dyed hair is growing out... :D

Maybe make it toggleable? Might be a nightmare in code though hahaha

Anthony

I love this 🥰can't wait to receive my postcard

Similicious

I don't think it should necessarily count as contacts/a dye when we change it; maybe we've just changed our mind about what eye/hair colour we'd like the character to have but we still want the new colour to be inheritable!

I picked natural hair only, BUT for folks who love supernatural creatures maybe make a default "natural hair colors" for their parafolks (if paralives go into the realm of supernatural stuff) . I would like to see an inheritance of dimples, freckles, vertilago(sp?), height, widow's peak... that's all I got lol THANK YOU FOR ALWAYS LISTENING TO OUR FEEDBACK! <3

Diamond Nicole

I would love if unnatural eye colours could be passed down, but not unnatural hairs I think. Would be fun to have weird eye colours being a quirky family trait!

I LOVE this! Genetics were my all time favorite subject in biology class and I loved it when NRAAS mods made this way better in Sims 3. So, if this is coming to Paralives as an (important) part of the game, I’m even more excited. :D

Maskra

Maybe only natural colors are inheritable as befault but we can link them if want to make more cosmic or fantastic paras

Also, genetic pattern should include hair types and skin tone!

I guess that, if we have choosen the colour whem creating the para, should count as a natural colour. If after that we can still change it that should count as contacts, if that makes sense.

curl pattern in hair should be genetic too!

ranine hay

Hmm as for other features related to genetics. 1. Attached earlobe vs unattached 2. Dimples vs no dimples 3. Cleft chin vs no cleft 4. Widows peak vs no widows peak 5. Right vs left handed Those are the only ones I can think of at the moment lol I’m also interested in seeing how you will tackle skin tone and hair texture when it comes to genetics. For example a biracial person who’s half black and half white can come out a million different ways. They could either favor both parents equally and have a skin tone and hair texture that’s in the middle or could favor one parent over the other. Or have the skin tone of their white parent but the hair texture of their black parent and Vice versa.

Simmons

My heart dropped for a second lol, I’m happy Christine is a full time employee now! ❤️ I love how you explained what everyone is working on. It really gets me excited to see the progress 💕 As for the poll I choose only natural colors can be inherited. It’s more realistic and makes you excited to see what the kids will inherit from who.

Simmons

Inheriting unnatural hair colors could be a mod later on - I agree that for now, it should only be natural hair colors.

I'd be happy with natural hair only being inherited because that way its more realistic and in the end you can always change/dye their hair colour if you want it to be different.

I agree, as long as there is a switch then I am happy. Cos in one save you might have it more realistic and another you might want crazy colours to be the norm!

Hi! Not a dev but, the only people who get a post card are those who have been on the $50usd tier, for about two months. The legend tier (50usd) is the only tier that get exclusive deliveries from the devs. We also get a choice to put our selves in-game! Hope this helps.

That's not what it says. It says that you will be able to 'unlink' a Para's genes with respect to their hair. That just enables dyed hair for that character uninheritable. That's not the same as not having unnatural colours inheritable.

Fran Smith

I chose natural only as inheritable, because that actually has the potential for providing more choice for everyone. I'm assuming that all sorts of colours can be given to Paras in Paramaker as hair dyes and coloured lenses. With coloured lenses, I'm wondering if things like these could actually be animated (possibly in the future or with mods), so that the Paras actually put them in. I'm imagining that Paras learning to put coloured lenses into their eyes could be hilarious. It certainly was when I learned to do it. I'm also thinking that hair dye could also be animated, both at a hairdresser (obviously) and at home. Home dying could also be hilarious, with possibilities for it to go wrong (just like in real life) - blonde ending up yellow or orange or green etc - it could even be timed in-game as a method of determining how dark or light the colour dye is. I know that from personal experience, blonde hair dyes can make your hair yellowish or even orangeish. Of course, we could also have animation for necklaces and earrings too...

Fran Smith

My first thought was regarding aliens and other supernaturals! If my fairy family has pink hair, I wouldn't want their baby to be a burnette. But maybe different races would have different "naturals" as their base. I really love y'all including us in the game creation! It's quite awesome, it makes me wish all gaming companies did something similar. I have more examples than I would like of games that could've been way better if they had just asked their target audience (not naming no names) 😅

I would say stick to natural hair color but totally have mods allow us to change that if we're role-playing or whatnot. it's a good idea :)

McCatto

Your English is amazing. If you hadn't said you were a second language speaker, I wouldn't have known. And I'm an English as a second language teacher. :-)

Fran Smith

Hello, So i haven't spoken much because i cant seem to get my Discord to work, but i have a few questions, First, being on tier 1$ for the last year and a half, (that is now, no longer available), Do i get a post card? Second, i see you have mentioned Mods, I run a CC group for Sims so i hope that means there will be able to have CC in the game? Y/N? And last question, Are there going to be supernatural characters in your game? This is my favorite thing about the sims! I really hope so! please let me know these few things, id love to hear back from you. And great job on the eyes, i really hope that all colors are passed down , but looks like i am outvoted, which seems like every vote lol

XXXTigger

I’d definitely prefer if unnatural genetics could be passed down, especially as I prefer to play with colourful occult sims (or just regular sims who are bright pink anyway) - but a switch of sorts to turn unnatural genetics on and off would probably be the best bet! That way everyone wins :)

I just think it will be more realistic

Sorry for my bad English, I'm not a native and I'm still learning haha. All this is amazing, all these details, the proportions of the body, the genuine genetics and having the option of being able to modify that is a simply amazing plus. I am very excited to see the results, best wishes always, it was definitely an excellent decision to sponsor this project!

Great job guys, the improvements on the hands look positively artistic and I love the reality and scientific basis of the genetics system. Keep going, we're all rooting for you!

JessIsMore

Considering I'm in a biotech major I'm extremely hyped, and so glad Anna is implementing genotypes and phenotype. Skin color will also be interesting, because it has multiple genes affecting a particular skin color trait not just one.

Olyvion

I think that it would be cool to have different settings for “natural” and “dyed” hair colours, but also to have the option to make typically unnatural colours be considered natural - ie a world where people have blue or green hair like in anime.

Amy Wallis

Lets make it real. Normal colours inheritable, but you can always Dye your hair into whatever colour you want, and/or wear coloured Contact Lenses, like the ones people wear at Comicon.

Daniel 'DazzaJay' Fitzgerald

i agree with a lot of these comments! since natural/dyed hair are separate, children should inherit the natural hair, but we should have the option to make the para’s natural hair color something unnatural like blue or white! for different gameplay styles i guess

I think only the parent's natural hair should be inheretable. If a parent has green hair as natural hair, then that could be inhereted, but if the parent's natural hair is blond, but dyed blue, then the blue shouldn't be inheretable.

Vegard Myklebust

If I remember correctly, it's possible to select a Para's actual hair color as well as a hair dye color, so I think it would make the most sense to have it so that their actual hair color is inheritable. If someone wants only natural hair colors to be inheritable, they can use the hair dye option to have a naturally brown-haired character who has their hair dyed blue pass down brown hair to their child. But if someone wants a character to naturally have blue hair, they can choose that for the actual hair color and not use the hair dye option.

Kirby Tardos

Adding to the "being able to choose". I think if I make my para in the creator and give her brown hair, that is locked to her genetics, and if she dyes it pink later, that will not affect it. But if I make her with pink hair, that is locked and regardless if I then make her hair green, black, or red, pink is the genetic color.

Bitey

This!

Nida Kamran

I think all hair should be inheritable. Maybe make it an option for people to chose what they want? If I made a sim bron with pink hair I would want it to be passed down. :)

Nida Kamran

I think all colours should be inheritable. I love the genetics system and I think that's a cool way to implement a real world element to the game, but I don't see why we have to stick to natural colours. Give players the options to play the game they want to play - unnatural or natural or both!

I LOVE the details of the genetics so far, and how all of the different aspects of the game are being treated with so much care and consideration! Anna, you're my hero 🙌🏽🙌🏽 I am definitely a huge fan of the way The Sims 2 handled genetics with only dominant hair colours being passed down and then having the option to "dye" hair. But as I'm reading from many others here, it would make sense if we had colourful occult sims passing on their own "natural" colouring :)

Bethy Grace

I voted for "only natural" but like others have said, having the option to decide would be much better! Also thinking down the road about occults/supernaturals, they should definitely have a way to toggle on "unnatural colors!"

LadyJ

I definitely think only natural colours should be inheritable, with the exception of supernatural para types (if/when they’re released), since I’m assuming a fairy with naturally pink skin and purple hair isn’t much of a stretch lol. But as long as there’s a cheat or a toggle, I’d be happy with either one as default :)

Aaron

What I'm concerned about if only natural colours are inheritable, is where the line between 'natural' and 'unnatural' would be drawn exactly? What some people may consider as 'natural' blonde, may be be considered by others to be 'unnatural' yellow. The same issue can happen with 'natural' black hair with a blueish glow to it: because the blue shade could be considered 'unnatural' by the game's mechanics, a 'realistic' hair colour might suddenly get excluded out of the gene pool just for being of a slightly too 'unnatural' shade. I believe it gives people more freedom to create the world they want if all hair colours can be inherited. Putting restrictions on that feels to me like it goes against the nature of Paralives. I'd also like to give a shoutout to this suggestion by Blackberry Cupcake: "It should have the option to create a para with an unnatural hair color and a box to select their natural hair's color, so it would be inheritable from that box, not the unnatural one." I'd really love that addition, maybe add the option to pick a Para's dominant and recessive hair colour as well. If we get to pick a Para's 1) dominant hair colour; 2) recessive hair colour; and 3) eventual dyed hair colour in the Paramaker, I'd be a happy camper.

M13Vulpecula XIII, ruler of Vulpeculand

I love the option to unlink the hair color from their genetics, so someone could start with brown hair in their genes, then dye it blue and the genes would ignore that.

I like that idea of having a box to check for which colour is the para's natural colour!

I love the idea too! Would be great as an option that maybe could be switched on or off in settings or something, then everyone wins :)

All colors should be inheritable for occult sims

Yep this!!! Exactly how I feel too

I voted "only natural colors" but honestly I'd like the option to classify an unnatural hair color as heritable in certain circumstances. The ability to toggle between the two would would be ideal.

Mercury Starlight

So glad to see true genetics being implemented! I've always found genetics fun. I like how you're handling it too, with color wheel colors being referenced to the nearest preset color. That's a good idea! One of my characters has violet eyes, and it always drives me crazy on video games when I have to give her blue instead. I'm glad you guys are putting so much thought into everything!

I think only natural colors should be inheritable because it's so weird to see a toddler with pink hair because their mom has a pink hair. It should have the option to create a para with an unnatural hair color and a box to select their natural hair's color, so it would be inheritable from that box, not the unnatural one. And I'm not even a fan of realistic play

I'm honestly not sure why anyone would vote for only natural colors, but if you just want it to be realistic, why not give us the option to turn off unnatural inheritance, if someone doesn't want that?

Elizabeth Gonzales

I think all colors should be inheritable because players who only want natural hairs can just use natural hair colors and people who want unnatural inheritance can both get there way and have their own playstyle. I'd also like to suggest if there was like layers to the hair kind of like in photoshop - to elaborate, layer 1 could be the natural hair and layer 2 could be colored, and maybe it would were off over time? or if there was a setting to let it fade?

Fisher Simmons

I would love it if unnatural hair, eyes & skin colours were inheritable because I love to play multi generational games and see my characters spread throughout the community, so their unique appearance makes them easy to spot around town. My ultimate goal is always to populate the entire town with multiple generations of my in game born characters!

Morgan LF

I’m glad to hear the team is doing well! 😊 As much as I love realism, I think that all colors should be inheritable since not everyone likes to play as normal humans and play as supernaturals instead

Stermatical

Congrats Christine! 😁 It may seem simple, but I'm super impressed by that hand upgrade, they look awesome Léa 😊 I like the idea of unnatural hair being inheritable. But, it looks like the majority feels the other way, which is totally fine seeing how open the modding is going to be, so it'll happen anyways 🙂 Great work team!

I think that only natural hair should be passed down, but if we get occults/supernatural then maybe that could change? I love making witches with “unnatural” hair that they get genetically

I feel like maybe there should be an option to choose if something is inheritable or not, because soemtimes i want to only have natural colours and sometimes i want crazy rainbow colours.

Amy

I think there should be a system where any hair color (natural or unnatural) can be passed down BUT the game should distinguish between natural and dyed hair color (where the para’s natural hair color will be passed down, not the dyed color).

So; I feel like I'd want unnatural eyes to be inheritable because then I am probably playing a specific style of para? But hair I could go either way. Thank you guys for all the awesome work!!

Maybe the unnatural colors could be a mod?

I really want to see some realistic freckles in this game! As someone who has freckles, I almost never find any version of freckles that feel real in a game, so not only would I like to see freckles aesthetically improved, but also have then available to be on different areas of the face. I think genetically, it would be cool to see certain Para's have a predisposition towards having freckles, and perhaps having genetics play a role in how many freckles they get, and where.

Stacey Dunnachie

It would be nice if all hairs were inheritable, it would leave the option for someone to play as if their Paras aren't human (How I play a lot of times)

For emersions sake I'd want natural hair colors to be inherited then color them if I choose later. Edit: or there could be a toggle to turn off or on natural and unnatural hair color inheritance so everyone is happy. Default would be natural then in settings flip a switch to allow all colors. Idk just a thought.

That's what I was thinking. I love playing as if my characters are of another race or world entirely!

I like the idea of all hair colors being inheritable. So if you decide your character's of a not-quite human race, their children can still inherit their traits.

Tabatha A Becker

More research needs to be done for the hair texture/type, but I'm on it! Thanks for your input

Anna

You're right, we're simplifying the real-life science because genetics are usually more complicated than one or two genes for a trait. I think we still don't know how many melanin-related genes there are, and how they all contribute to the skin color, hair color and eyes... If you want to make a more realistic up-to-date 100 genes system, you can with our modding system! :P We're still brainstorming how we can put all the different types of heterochromia in the game and in the genetics system! Thank you for your input though, it's interesting!

Anna

I think there should be a selected natural hair color, and then the ability to get you hair dyed. Maybe even have your hair dye expire over a certain period of time and return to natural. Idk. All good thing those. Interested to see where this goes.

Synthia Hubbard

I think people didn't read the full post. You will be able to unlink unnatural hair colors from the genetics! So I think all colors should be inheritable.

Draconicrose

I second this! I'd also say that should work vice-versa: so for a wild example, a player could say they've got a family of [fae/aliens/whatever] whose natural colours are in the range of blues and greens, and that family dyes it 'natural' human colours to blend in with their neighbourhood of human friends. Their kids should inherit the blues and greens, not the brown/blonde/red/black the parents dyed it to.

I think the new research about eye color is not on the 2 genes type anymore. There is more genes responsible for the colors of the eyes. I have central heterochromia, my mum has blue eyes and my dad hazel eyes, my sisters have gray eyes and blue eyes and I have a mix of gray, blue, yellow for the outer part and the central part is brown/hazel. We don't have gray eyes in my family only blue green on my mum's side and brown, hazel and blue on my dad's side. In a 2 genes system this could not be possible even with a receive gene. But for a game it's more simple^^ how would you put heterochromia in the game? Will it have different forms or only 2 eyes different one?

We don't die our irises, but we wear contacts, so that could be an option!

Blaven

I’m not into unnatural hair colors passing down but I’m into unnatural eye colors passing down lol I don’t know what to choose

Yes, everything that can have a gene for it can be possibly skipped for a generation! We don't know yet for the facial features (like the size of the nose, space between eyes, etc). We'll have to simplify it a little bit, as in real life they're controlled by hundreds of genes and most likely environment variables too, but they will be some kind of inheritance system for these, one way or the other!

Anna

Awwww I love the vote for this and I’m so so happy to see the post cards all ready!! Happy days 🤗😩❤️🙏🏻 great post as ever guys 🌸

Becky

I honestly prefer natural hair colors to be a part of the genetic system, and unnatural colors to remain as that cosmetic because I feel it might get annoying if I randomly generated a para who did have purple hair it’d be coded in the PNA (paradna lol). Then it makes me think about townies NPCs having unnatural hair colors as well through town which would bother me a bit,. Also for phenotype would it be possible to have hair type inherited? In this case hairstyles, like a parent who has straight hair parent and a curly haired parent which would be dominant , could have children who would inherit the same hairstyles? Or have them inherit something slightly in the middle? For example my cousin has Both parents one with straight hair and one with tight curly hair, he on the other hand ended up having a wavy/curly pattern and not a tight curly hair patterned as his mom , while his sister on the other hand inherited a much tighter curly hair pattern

S&M Gonzalez

" modders will be able to use to integrate their own animations into Paralives." --All I could think of was 'Wicked whims' while reading this. The impending doom, that we won't be able to prevent :O Also this line: "I'm looking forward to see what people will do with it!"--This is just too pure! Gotta protect Alex and the team!

Bea

I don’t know how possible it would be but I feel like it would be cool to have it be a setting! Like you can choose in settings if unnatural hair colors can be genetic or not, that way you can turn it on/off so if you do want to do like the berry challenge you can but if you want to play and only have natural colors be genetic you can do that too!

Stephanie

Same Im so excited and can’t wait to learn about it more!

S&M Gonzalez

It would be more simple (and preferable to me) if only natural hair was inheritable. It will be easy to change afterwards! Plus, I think that birthing a blue-haired baby would be quite a shock 🤣

I love the science of everything as a bit of a science nerd too, it’s so interesting to see in a paralives and I’m so happy to see it get implemented in detail for paras this way :) also to add on to my previous question about phenotypes and hair type inheritance, will beauty marks and facial features be able to skip a generation as well? Like a child would end up looking like the grandmother or grandfather? I feel this might be too complicated but I must ask Would it be possible to go that complex in paras having genetics in this way? What I mean is certain noses, lips, eyes, etc, would be dominate or recessive in this manner and passed on to different para offspring.

S&M Gonzalez

That makes total sense, but we may want to go for an "advanced dna panel" that is accessible from the PAM, rather than putting it directly on the hair color picker, so that the UI is not too full, but we're still testing this. Thanks for your idea!

Anna

I'm really torn between the two, but a really interesting option would be to be able to choose the natural color and afterwards be able to select an unnatural one if wanted.

It could be another gene related to the eyes colors too!

Anna

Such Martians genetic rules, different from the human ones, could be possible to do with the mod system!

Anna

Since we have a height slider (*squee*) I want height to be genetic.

Megan Santucci

I voted for only natural - BUT - I think it might be good if the player could choose one or more colour that would be unnatural in real life and adopt them as natural in their imaginary world. For example if the player wanted to think of Martians as being real in their game, and Martians are presumed to be green, then green would be chosen by them as being an inheritable colour. I do think a clear distinction should be observed between the hair colour a para was born with, and anything they might do later about dying their hair - I'd not want to see acquired colouring passed on genetically.

I JONES

I think there should be a switch when you are making Para, where you choose if the color that para has when creating is dyed(and then you also get to choose natural color) or natural. Unnatural colors should be allowed as genetic colors for unnatural creatures(aliens, fairies etc) if/when they will be in the game. Also, will there be heterochromia? That would be great, especially if para with heterochromia could pass either color, or with small chance both :)

Blaven

I honestly wouldn’t mind either, but I’d prefer natural.

Nazly Sabet

I’m not sure how difficult it would be but it would be cool to be able to turn off/on the unnatural heritance except for aliens (if they’re in the game) I think that should stay natural!

Madison Rains

So like you have in the Maggie video where has a natural hair section and an unnatural hair section. You should always pick your character natural hair color and that is what is genetic (people can add pink or whatever to the natural hair section) and then you pick a color from the unnatural color that is not genetic, the one you picked for your natural color is (again you could choose black as your unnatural hair color but have brown natural hair which is what would be genetically passed down) if that makes sense??

Macayla

IIRC gray eyes are genetically indistinguishable from blue eyes (at least as far as the major genes go) so I imagine they would be at the same dominance level.

Megan Santucci

I think it would be cool to have inheritable unnatural colored hair. Just think, if we were to do a berry para family, you could pass on those berry genes!!

Paige Fletcher

I think it would be neat (and kind of useful) is if you choose a natural hair color, and then choose the option to dye it to an unnatural color. So if your parafolk has blue hair and has a child, rather than just picking a random color for that child, it will consider the parents natural hair color.

BroSkittles

I totally agree!

You could make it so the game doesn't automatically generate parafolk with unnatural genetic hair colours. So the only way they can start populating your game would be if you specifically decided to create parafolk in pam that have unnatural coloured hair as their genetic hair.

Dizzardy

I love that idea! It would be a great middle ground, I think.

Jesslynn

Love reading these diaries, you guys are awesome - and the depth... I'm in love. I had a small idea, actually (might have to email you guys?) about having letterboxes alongside mailboxes. In the EU we have letterboxes and I think that would be a cool detail to have your letters go through your door (via the postman) rather than having to go outside and get it like in America. If anyone else would like this? Either way, congrats Christine on the new full-time position! :)

I'm for unnatural colors as long as we can "unlink" certain things. That way if you want silver hair to be genetic it can be, but the para that dyes their hair purple won't pass that on to their kids because it's not their genetic makeup.

Christine Harvey

Just saw the edit: nevermind my idea then haha 😆

We're considering it! Maybe having grey hair could be a genetic trait too, like some Para may have a chance to get grayer hair with age, and some do not.

Anna

Personally I like the idea of all hair colours being inheritable (or at least including a toggle that allowed you to make it possible)....but only if they were chosen as a "birth" hair colour in the paramaker. Obviously it would be weird if a parafolk dyed their hair in-game and it was inheritable. I'm thinking it would be helpful creating certain anime characters. (I assume they're not all just dyeing their hair....)

Dizzardy

Okay I'm voting for unnatural colours, just because you can unlink it and I'd love the option of at least inheriting odd eye colours

Bianca J

We're considering it, that could be cool!

Anna

We added a paragraph to clarify this, this will be possible!

Anna

I like this idea! I have a "that nose" kind of family too :D

Anna

Yes we're sending postcards everywhere in the world :)

Anna

Could we have heterochromia in the game???? :))

We're considering this. It's a cool idea!

Anna

We added a paragraph to clarify this!

Anna

for me it depends on a couple things. for hair colors, I would only want the genetic color passed on. even if a para has died their hair a different natural color, I would want their actual genes passed on, not the color they've died their hair, because that's reflective of real life. I would expect a para's eye color to be passed on regardless because we don't die our irises...I know there are colored contacts but very few people wear those every day. and of course skin color I would expect to be passed on regardless. also I would expect supernatural paras, if we get those at some point, to pass on whatever is in their genes, which presumably could be different to natural human coloring. in that respect, having a way to designate genetic traits would be optimal. I just don't really want to pass on strange colors of hair because my paras happened to get pregnant while their hair was 'dyed'. I would want the kids to reflect the para's genetic hair color.

We added a paragraph to clarify this, this will be possible!

Anna

Congrats Christine on the new position! Love that Alice and Léa have been remodeling some body features to make it more realistic and that animations will be moddable! Looking forward to seeing the full build mode when Jérémie is finished with his final tweaks. I'm thrilled that there's going to be an actual genetic systems and vote for natural hair/eye/skin colors as inheritable only. I suspect the majority of players would prefer it and those who don't, would be able to mod the genetic system to their preferences. I'd also like it if hair texture, moles, freckles, body features (height, body/facial hair, length/widht of limbs if they're adjustable, facial features, etc) and personalities/'talents' are inheritable to a degree, but even if they're not I'm already very pleased with hair, eye and skin color.

Zedef

Not sure about this yet. We don't have a single preset brown though, we have a lot of shades for each of the preset color, to generate a bit of randomized diversity! But we're considering the fact that some traits could be exactly like their parents traits.

Anna

OMG the edit. I vote we crown Anna queen of all the geeks.

Megan Santucci

I like the idea of passing down all hair colours to children (whether it's blond, blue, pink, brown, green, etc.), but I understand the need to differentiate between the colour assigned genetically to a Para and the colour they choose later (for cosmetic reasons). A good middle ground solution could be the following: when making a Para in the Paramaker, there could be a line/clickable box further down, after you chose your colours for the whole haircut with the colour wheel, that says: "Is the colour/Are the colours selected a genetically assigned hair colour?" And then you would have two boxes "Yes" or "No" that you could click on. When you click on yes, it means that whatever colour you have selected will be treated as a hair colour that you can pass to your children. If you say "No", it means the hair colour you chose is only considered as a cosmetic preference and therefore, that it will NOT be passed down to children. After clicking "No", the player could be presented with another box/window/line that asks them to then choose the hair colour for the Para (by opening the colour wheel/menu for hair colours) that will be used in the genetics system. The same could be done with eye colours. What do you guys think? P.S.: I am not sure if the Paralives team reads all the comments on their posts so I will be posting this in the Community tab (for Patreons only to keep it secret) as well. :)

an option to have them inherited in the setting would be great!

Victoria Garcia

Like the idea of root color being the genetic color

I think the first one is good if the "natural" colour is the one you choose when you create your para, be it brown or blue, and the "unnatural" one is when you dye your hair later on. Because it's possible that the naturals hair colours in the world you imagined for this party are, for example, blue, purple and red.

Morgane PERRAUT

And I love the idea of being able to set a genetic hair color for your para and then dye their hair

It would be cool if there was a way to set the Paras "natural hair color" and then add a "dye color" option some how. Then, whatever the natural color is would be the one that would affect genetics. So you could have a pink haired Para whose natural color is, say, brown; rather than their offspring inheriting the pink, they would inherit the brown. Or, on the other hand, if you're making some sort of fantasy or alien Para, you could set the natural color to orange or whatever, and that color would be passed down through genetics. Either way, I'm extremely excited for this game!

LapeyLou

I loved the fact that there will be the possibility of modding animations!!Think of all the fun stuff modders will be able to do!!!It's really exciting. I also can't wait to see the build mode. And custom genes!!!!that sounds super good.

Mari R.

Hi Parateam! I’m happy to hear of your progress with building tools, which is my favorite part of life sims (I like to imagine walking through my dream house to relax me as I fall asleep). For my two cents, only natural hair colors should be inheritable; otherwise it would break immersion for those of us who prefer to simulate real life. Keep up the good work. :)

Sean McDorman

wth??? This genetics system is insane so detailed geese i'm excited! So cool.

Hillary Mullins

I would love eye colors to always be genetic, because variations in eye colors irl will make me want to use the color wheel

I really like having unatural colours as I like to play challenges where you add in a different colour to the gentics every generation. Maybe a setting that you could turn on or off depending on play style.

Maybe make it a setting that can be turned off or on

Chloe & Warren B

Whenever unnatural hair is passed down I find myself never giving my character unnatural hair colors because I do not want their children to have them. Like if my character has brown hair and changes it to blue, I want their kid to have brown hair, not blue.

Macayla

To me, I feel like unnatural colours would make sense especially if I ever wanted to create more "supernatural" looking paras, for example, if I make a para with green skin and blue hair, I might want their kids to look like that too. I saw someone comment something about the "root" colour being the one you inherit which I think makes the most sense!!

Dixie

I think that's how Fallout 4 handled your child, Shaun. I'd changed my character several times throughout the course of the game, but when I found him he still had the shocking white hair I started with. I thought it was neat.

The first option definitely! I hate playing the s*ms 3 and having a toddler age up with bright blue or violet hair lol

Aleksandra

I like seeing the unnatural colors being inherited because I like playing Legacy Games and seeing my characters' descendants with purple eyes makes me really happy. Especially if Paralives will have the "NPC" or just people I "kick out" continue their lives and have children and grandchildren.

Grace Sivils

Thanks!!!!!! This is awesome and great news

Ooh adding my vote for curly hair genetics!

Megan Santucci

Maybe it could work like eye colors, where parafolk get a copy of the gene for facial features from each parent. Maybe a player can set them as dominant or recessive, or better yet, give them a spot on a spectrum between dominant and recessive. That was how genes worked in TS2. I might like to see rare mutations where a para inherits a modified version of the family feature- say their nose is longer or wider

I think it would also be cool if I could create an elder who has gray or white hair but their genetic hair color is something different. I don't know if that would be too complicated, though.

Megan Santucci

Hi ! First of all, I'm happy that the whole team is doing well and that things are going so well. I'm really excited by this news especially on the build mode because it is really the aspect that I prefer in this kind of game: creating and in the sims, building houses is really what I like the most. It's nice that the team includes us so much in the creation process. For my part, I prefer that only natural colors are inheritable and then we can dye our hair according to our mood :) I will surely take my tier to the next level! thank you so much ! take care xx

Virginie M.

I believe natural human hair colors would be more befitting as long as there no supernatural aspects in the game.

I am so happy that a system like real life genetics is considered to be put in a game like this. That makes it so detailed and enjoyable. But I would prefer to define the "natural" paramteres in the para as well

Like others here, I want my para to have a genetic hair color (even if that color is unnatural, lol!) but not have post-creation changes change the genotype. So a Para created with blue hair would have blue-haired babies, but a Para created with brown hair who later changed to blond would have brown-haired babies. If that makes sense?

Megan Santucci

I think everything should be inheritable. If you don't want unnatural colors, it would be easy to just not use them.

I think the root colour is what should be inheritable. so if the root is blue, the blue gets passed down, but if the root is brown and the rest of the hair is blue, the brown gets passed down.

Maya Appavoo

Love the genetics system you're all working on! Reminds me of the one in the Sims 2. Definitely can't wait to see what you guys come up with.

Maggie

I would love it if they could have each eye be a different color

I think we should have an option to define "genetic" color (natural or unnatural) of hair and then be able to dye hair to a custom color that won't be passed down to children.

SimMattically

You showed us in the Maggie video that the paramaker has two sections for hair color, 'natural' and 'coloring'. I think when you first make a para you must choose their natural hair color and this natural color can not be changed later except with cheats, but of course you can dye their hair in the in-game paramaker. The natural hair color should be the one they pass on, regardless if it's brown or pink.

Scooter

I understand if this is too complicated-- but I would love it if roots began to show after time has passed since dying a para's hair.

I think making it togglable would be best - I really want to be able to have unnatural colors run in the family - I like doing the challenges where you have weird hair color and eye color and you have to have it stay in the family for 10 generations - I hope I can do that in Paralives as well!

Ayla Gwizdak

I love realistic genetics so much! I think natural hair should be passed down and there is a separate function for dyed hair, but that colors like blue and green could be included within "natural" hair so that it can be passed down for the people that want it.

Queen Alyssa

I agree with other comments that it should be an option to switch this on and off. so if we are playing a regular family and I want the mum to have blue hair, I would assume its dyed and not expect a child to be born with blue hair. but if im playing a magical or supernatural family then blue hair would be fine to be naturally inherited for a child of a blue haired 'alien' etc. to be able to turn off eye and hair colour individually would be great too. I might like to have a slightly unnatural piercing blue eye to be genetic but the mums dyed pink not to be a genetic option. God I sound picky haha.

stephanie mulcahy

I would really like if each Para's natural hair color is automatically what is passed down (so if a brunette "dyes" their hair blue then the children would still have brown hair) but if I make a Para with naturally blue hair for some reason that is still able to be passed down.

Chandra Marie

i think it's limiting to only make it "natural" colors. like what if i wanna recreate a fictional character that has blue hair? will that hair not be inheritable bc it's unnatural?

This is so exciting to read about, the genetics description made the biggest smile creep across my face. i love everything so much and i LOVE how accessible you are already mapping it out to be for modders!

mortia

I would really like genetics around facial features to be quite in depth, for me it's one really important aspect of a life sim! It'd be nice if a family could have distinctive features in common. +passed down not just from parents but also grandparents

I think it would be great to have just natural genetics that are inheritable but also have an option to turn on or off cosmetic genetics.

I think it should be "activateable", so one can switch on and off, if unnatural colors shall be inheritable. So one can chose to play realistic or more "magical". =)

Elli Roth

only natural

How about random mutations causing unnatural eye colours?

It would be interesting if in paramaker we had the option of marking colors as inheritable, lets say we have a wheel for the base hair color (aside the ones for dying option we have) from which we choose the inheritable hair color and then we use the dying ones to, well, dying it if we want. Hope it makes sense.

I like the idea that only nature colors are inherited. If I have a brunette sim who dyes her hair blue and purple..I don’t want babies with blue or purple hair 😂

Haley

I would also love if hair had its own genetic thingy! For example, my father has straight hair, and my mother really really curly. My dads sister has wavy hair. I got the same curls as my mother, and my two brothers both got wavy hair and one is a surprise ginger haha!

Adina

It would be awesome if there could be a "genetic memory" of some kind - so for example if a Para is genetically blonde, but then changes their hair color, they still pass on the blonde gene

I would like to see hair texture passed on as well :) if my para has Afrocentric features their babies should not have straight hair! Also personality traits. I know it’s important for paras to be different, but I think it would be cool if certain distinct personality traits would pass down. For example creative parents tend to give birth to creative children. It would also be fun to have a child be born into a family where everyone is creative except them. Thanks for the update you guys are amazing!

Joanna Hinds

Hey if we are playing by game and anime rules that means you’ve birthed yourself a main character 😂

Haley

I am super happy with the improvements already! I am so excited about the build mode & how everything will come together! I love the different color eyes & the science you are putting behind it. It really shows the love in game & how much you guys involve us in this process. Thank you, all of you for everything you are doing for us to give us all the game we have wanted and we deserve! *praises*

only natural colors, but it would be nice if characters based on anime characters inherited every colors.

Felipe Garbagnati

I AM SO EXCITED!!!! i love genetics and this has me truly hype

Coral Montgomery

I wouldn’t want to dye a Paras hair and then their child is born with it. So to remain consistent I think natural colors only for eyes and hair would be best. However, it could be the players choice on what is a natural color. Create a custom preset eye, hair,or skin that becomes natural for all Paras that would result in a funky Avatar like alien world.

sour_reads

I think it would be cool to select for each para whether certain genetics can pass down. Even before supernaturals are officially put into the game, we might make a Para that is supposed to be a "supernatural" creature. If they have purple hair and red eyes genetically then you'd want them to have the chance to pass those genes on. However, if a human para dyed their hair that colour you wouldn't want them to pass it on. So if there were switches for each individual para then you have the choice. If the human had a baby with the "supernatural" then the hair could be passed on from the supernatural's side but not the human's. I think that would be the best way of doing it in the advanced customisation section of PAM maybe. If the switch is turned off for the supernatural who has purple hair then they can either pass on a normal colour from their partner, a random one from the selection of natural hair swatches, or a descendant who had normal hair.

KittHaven

I would like to be able to set a trait as dominant for a family line. Like say...everyone in the family has "that nose". etc etc.

that's a great idea that you could choose if your custom colour is natural or not, it would be also good if you could choose if this colour can be picked by randomised townies.

Szymon

Congratulations Christine ❤️❤️

Lenny

You mean if I am a Hero or Legend and I live in Zimbabwe I can receive your postcards too? PS. 1 CONGRATULATION CHRISTINE!!! Now you become one of the LEGEND team!!! PS.2 I will call Jeremie "JeJe" from now on out of cuteness. :)))

OK call me a Dragonball Z nerd, but I love the idea of Trunks having Bulma's blue hair!! :-) Even though he didn't. He should have! lol

Jennifer Huber

Amazing work! So excited for what is coming. I prefer natural colors to be inherited, and the other colors to be a cosmetic thing. Like if my para has brown hair, she/he can go to the saloon and dye its hair. Or dye their hairs at home and maybe ruin their hair lol. It happens

A toggle would be ideal if we can't have all colors be inheritable

ThatOneCamel

I love this all! Genetics are one of my favorites aspects of simulation games! I was actually wanting to ask if there would possibly be a way to include a randomly generated ancestry. I like to think of it as like a family tree, but I could add an option while I create my para, to give them a randomly generated parent or grandparent? They may or may not ever be seen in game, or maybe I could eventually see them randomly, or may just start out deceased or something. Idk I just really love the idea of having a pre done ancestry in my families I create, that way I can focus on creating a single para, without having to create parents or grandparents. It’s weird but I alway did like how the sims 2 was very determined to make their prepare families have a history, as it added to their characters and stories! Sorry to compare with the sims but it was the only example I could think of! Anyway, as always, I’m psyched! You guys never disappoint!

Ewaka Flaka

Dimples and freckles would be fun genetc traits! I prefer having natural hair color be genetic but to still have an option to allow unnatural hair color have genetics. Just for different styles of gameplay

I like the game to be realistic in that aspect, I don't like babies with pink hair.

when you say "natural colors" i assume that means the color that the parafolk is born with? so if a parafolk is born with blue hair then that should be inheritable. but if the parafolk dyed their hair blue that shouldn't be inheritable. with that in mind, i voted that only natural colors should be inheritable. if i'm wrong and a parafolk can't be naturally born with blue hair, then i'd pick the latter.

I vote for only "natural" colors to be inheritable, but hope that other eye colors like grey, amber, hazel, and darker/lighter browns will be included in that. I understand that's more complicated though!

Is it possible we could just have two different “categories” regarding Para hair? Like when we first create a Para, we can decide their genetic hair color, regardless of whether it’s “natural” or “unnatural”, and then any hair changes outside of that initial creation would be considered dyes, wigs, etc. and not be passed down.

I can see the appeal for the natural, but I get so disappointed when a character I create has natural white hair and it is considered unnatural for the child to also receive white hair. So, I say go all in with the unnatural. It's not as if we can't change it if we want! Or, maybe you can do something where if you make your para with an unnatural color, then it counts. Otherwise if you change it after, or maybe allow an option for you to pick whether the unnatural color is considered their natural hair color?

Amazing work guys! Thank you so much.. I’m really excited with the animation tools, 😍😍

The part about the color wheel, does that mean if I give my para a custom shade of brown hair and her baby gets genes for brown hair it would be the preset brown and not the mom's brown?

I saw that you can create a "natural" color with a color wheel so if people really want a naturally blue-haired Parafolk that shouldn't be a problem. I definitely prefer only natural hair being genetically passed down. More realistic.

More like the hair color they are born with is the one that will go through genetics. Like sims 2. Regardless if it’s a natural hair color or something blue or pink

Happy to see Christine as a permanent employee!! Congrats! I like the idea of the unnatural being inheritable, as it adds an element of supernatural/fictional stuff to it. But I can also see a want to have it turned off. Like a switch if you want something else that someone doesn't like. Whatever is chosen will work though, since it will be moddable!

Im leaning natural only but I'm fine either way

I hope you can have heterochromia or sectoral heterochromia!

Natural hair color should be genetic because I like to pretend my character gotten their “hair dyed” or is wearing a “wig”

I desperately hope the unnatural color wins in the poll, I get so tired of having characters I make have children that don’t have their hair color and looks nothing like their parents

Maybe make it an option for unnatural hair colors to be "natural" but also have the option to "dye" their hair other colors?

Does this refer to colors themself? Like for example brown can be inheritable but blue cannot? Or does it mean that a kid can inherit their parents blue hair just because their hair is dyed blue? That seems like it would defeat the purpose of having paras have a natural hair color in the first place, but if people want to make character with natural blue hair they should be able to, but the default natural hair colors of other characters in the town should just be natural colors you would see in real life.

I would like for default unnatural colors be considered dyed hair or contacts, but people could still have it passed down if they wanted to like was mentioned through cheats

so glad christine is permanent!!

I think if there is ever a supernatural component to this game then some non natural colors should be inheritable in that case same with hair as well
