Lacuna Rambles/Thoughts/Gif Reacts #3: Respect is Earned 👀
Added 2023-07-31 12:30:01 +0000 UTCIn light of "Never Can Say Goodbye" publishing, which features J. Corvin's POV when the MC had to 'depart' Fernweh, I wanted to mention an important character detail.
Have any of you noticed that the Fernweh Gang refers to the TFS grandfather quite differently? This was further hinted at in a line from J's writing. It's below:
"[Grandfather_Name], let [Name] go!"
J isn't looking at your grandfather with anything resembling respect, only a quiet anger that's moderated by their care for you.
There is a certain trend that becomes apparent throughout Book One when the MC's grandfather is mentioned in conversation.
B doesn't tend to talk about him much, almost as if avoiding the subject, but when it's necessary, they are typically respectful with a 'Mr.' B still tends to ask after you or about your feelings rather than pry too much about your grandfather. This suggests that B knows more about the MC's time outside of Fernweh--the emotional impact.
S consistently uses 'Mr. [Surname]', possibly to either show respect or that they still default to what they learned from interacting with him as a child/teen. Due to the friendship that is hinted at in Book One and in Patreon writings (here and here), S kept hold of the image of the grandfather they saw caring for the MC, so the 'old' him or at least before the absence. Keep in mind the Dorrans were close to the TFS grandfather with Mrs. Dorran reaching out, bringing casseroles, and helping to shop for the TFS Dog. There's a history there, one that S prefers to remember fondly.
R uses '[Surname] Senior'. They choose to only refer to him in relation to the MC themself, placing emphasis on your family name rather than the grandfather. It's a tiny thing, some might say inconsequential, but how R often bends or shapes things around the MC is very important to them as both a lover 🖤 and a best friend. 😌
J always refers to him by his first name. 🙃 So, J. Corvin the very well-mannered, courteous, and gentle detective of Fernweh who grew up on a farm with dutiful (strict) parents only uses the first name. That… that seems like a disconnect, right? Well, if you want to know the exact moment this changed—why J changed how they view the MC's grandfather—then read back through 'Never Can Say Goodbye' because that's the night 'Mr. [Surname]' became '[Grandfather_Name]' to them.
Oh, I ended that on an angsty note. Let's just say you don't want to know what Ms. Verner would call the TFS grandfather (here and here). She can hold a grudge. 🥰

This is a character detail that can speak volumes, if you notice why! 💚I hope you enjoyed it.

Oh, I'm looking hard at your last line in particular about Sparrow thinking his grandfather wouldn't want him to attend the ceremony. I can't imagine how he felt standing before the crowd while thinking those thoughts. This adds a nice layer of angst and complicated feelings into the dynamic with the grandfather. 💔😌

2023-08-17 15:36:42 +0000 UTCAH YES, OUR GRAN PAPPY, THE OLD MAN, The absolute conflicted feelings Sparrow has for that man, bitterness tends to win though. Good old Kenneth (yeh I picked that name for him). WHEN I SAY SPARROW HAS COMPLICATED FEELINGS... Sparrow will deny being bitter and upset, but then say something scathing. He's got hella abandonment issues and struggles with his feelings. Sparrow didn't want to go to the memorial because he didn't think his grandfather would want him to go, tbh, but he would deny that.

2023-08-16 13:50:54 +0000 UTC"who won't forgive anyone who hurts MC" <-- 😉💯💚 It's my pleasure! 😻 I've been waiting to mention this detail, so it seemed to be the perfect timing with J's bittersweet writing still fresh. They tend to hold onto the past, but the night of the MC's 'depature' is one they've thought about too many times.

2023-08-01 17:10:33 +0000 UTCAw, thank you! 🥰 I'm so happy that all of the little details I include foster that sense of realness within TFS, especially when it comes to its characters since that's my hope. All of the angst, growth, tenderness, humor, and everything else becomes so much more meaningful when we're able to relate to them. I'm smiling at how Phoebe views J as a "papa/mamma bear", and I know for a fact that they'd wrap her up in a hug after hearing this, possibly a little bashful, but they don't disagree. They have such a big heart despite all they've been through and how there are some walls in place. J cares.💚 You have a great read of them, especially what you mentioned about them not feeling clingy or needy, but deeply caring because that's who they are. :D I didn't realize J was Phoebe's canon bestie aside from B, so I love that too! I'm excited for you to read more scenes between the two that are friendship dependent. 😊

2023-07-31 17:41:21 +0000 UTCLove how much you've thought through thr little details like that - it adds a real level of richness to the world. Makes the characters really feel like real people. I know I'm head over heels for Bee (and Phoebe swoons at all the memories of them being there for all the emotional fallout and supporting then), but J's depth of emotion and loyalty to the MC is just so damn endearing and beautiful. They don't feel clingy or needy, but you can genuinely feel how deeply they have always cared for the MC. Continuing on that note though, they became *the* detective of Fernweh. It's not just Phoebe that treats them as "papa/mamma bear", the whole town does. And they take that job seriously, they're not some jaded cop who wanted authority, they just genuinely do care for the people of Fernweh and want to help them. It's just really sweet and shows how big a heart they have - they're always Phoebe's best friend bar Bee.
