I use the built-in Health app on iOS to help with this sort of thing. It handles both routine and as-needed medications, has customizable icons to match the pill shape and colours, and sends a reminder at the scheduled time and then a more urgent reminder after 30min or so if you haven’t logged taking your meds yet. Simple and effective!

until I got my smart speaker giving me verbal reminders at the right times my mum would discord voice call me to check I had taken my meds and I would dm her when I took them. chronic illness, HRT, and AuDHD makes me need help from my mum into my late 40s

no no,,, you’ve got a point.

If this is a medication you take daily or a fixed number of times a day, i.e., per the prescription, and you happen to remember when you filled the script and opened that bottle, you could count the pills and see how many you have left, and then deduce whether or not you have taken that day’s dose. Also, you could read the provided info, if you have it, and have the ability and the time, because sometimes it's a LOT of reading, and often microscopic and confusing to boot, sadly. Failing that, one could contact whoever issued the Rx or the pharmacy, and ask if it's better to double up, potentially, or to miss a dose of any of the medications one is unsure if one took or not on any given day or dose time. In some cases, doubling up may be preferable, especially for meds either with no to low overdose potential or where the dose one is on is WAY below the maximum safe amount. Which way is better for the patient will of course vary from medication to medication, as the difference or distance between the minimum effective dose per person and the maximum safe dose can be either broad or scanty. I understand for example that the minimum therapeutic dose and max safe dose for acetaminophen (generic for Tylenol,) are comparatively close together compared to most other common medications, though I could, of course, be wrong. Best to consult the insert and make sure you observe the dosing information for each different medications. (I am NOT a doctor nor have I ever been. This is just what seems best to me.)

Guess why I know ;)

You can get bottles with timers on them.

I want to add my voice to the chorus praising weekly pill containers. My system for avoiding having this happen involves both a pill reminder box AND a sheet where I write down what I take and when, especially medications that DON’T go in the box… like pain medicines, which I track separately in part because the dosing schedule doesn’t line up perfectly with the AM & PM daily medications. I use a spreadsheet that I created using the Free/Libre OpenSource office suite, LibreOffice for this purpose. (I only mention this here because FL/OSS is better than locked-in proprietary for-money software in that, at the very least, it's legal to redistribute and even modify, provided one does so in compliance with the... terms... of... ...the... Why are you all looking at me like that? I'm sorry, did I slip into FL/OSS evangelism where it doesn't make sense? (LOL) Sorry... I'll show myself to the corner.

Taking no drugs is basically always better than taking double drugs. If you can't remember, it's best not to take drugs.

I use one of those daily pill containers and refill it every week so I don't forget, it's actually so useful cause you can just see if you already took them on whatever day and don't have to guess

This is why I have a day-of-the-week pill sorter. Made me feel old AF having to buy one, but it turns out when you have ADHD, you just need one. Trust me, honey; it’s a necessity.

I have to use an App for that or this happens to me. Sadly the apps are kinda....
