2024-07-28 22:30:34 +0000 UTCThere is "international sumo", which essentially extracts the sport out from almost all of the tradition and gives it kind of a boxing make-over. There is no gyoji, for example, and instead they have a referee who dresses similar to an MMA or boxing ref. It has weight-classes as well so lighter fighters can take part. It is still very small and niche though but it at least gives a model for how perhaps one day sumo could respectfully be added to the Olympics or other international competition.
