Dragon is one of the very many relatively vague references Oda makes to revolutions and especially marxist ones at that. Idk if he is a marxist or if he just finds them really cool in a worldbuilding perspective, but that is certainly his inspiration, at least in spirit instead of them being actually communist. Luffy's birthday is the same as Karl Marx and Oda has a huge poster of Che in his office as other evidence. I think the "for the people" part of it is the big inspiration part in One Piece, as that is practically what he and Luffy by extent are fighting for.

2024-10-17 02:37:25 +0000 UTCSo if you are curious about why Garp wears the dog helmet, most people I know who speak japanese in the One Piece community agree it is most likely an play on a Japanese idiom that translates to "wearing a cat". If you want to look up what it generally means you could probably guess at why it was used, and later in the show when we get to see more of Garp it will maybe become easier to understand.

Even though Garp was already a character we've seen before, nothing about his interactions with Koby and Helmeppo was a clue of who he is (other than a Vice Admiral). Which is why we have flashbacks lol. Flashbacks get such a bad reputation for the pacing of the anime but many times it helps to refresh our memories. Case in point, when we first got "introduced" to Garp and Dragon. At this point, we're 300+ episodes and these two characters have only been seen once or twice, if I remember correctly. Also, Zoro saw Helmeppo's bare ass in the LA only lol.

2024-07-21 21:42:18 +0000 UTCive been waiting for these two episodes for the longest. We have seen Garp before, but it was really early on in the series so i dont blame you for not remembering. He was training Koby and Helmeppo but we never saw his face. Also, i feel like the OPLA was good for what it was, and the actor portraying Garp was amazing, but the original Garp is so much more likable, and as you said, not as serious as OPLA Garp. A lot of lore drop, including stuff about Shanks and the four emperors, and Luffys dad. This is the point where One Piece really takes off, and thats saying something considering we just finished an amazing arc.
