The families of these concubines want their daughters there. Lishu, who was 9 when she was made a concubine was done for political reasons. I just hope the previous emporer never touched her, as I believe that the current emporer hasn't done so. At least I hope so. It is a disgusting system regardless. Lady Lishus soup was poisoned, her taster knew she doesn't like mackerel. She , along with Lishu's othe ladies in waiting think Lishu is just being picky, but she is allergic to a few foods. Her taster here, switched her food with Lady Gyokukyo's food to bully her. She did not put the poison in. She was actually saved by doing so. She would have tasted that soup if she didn't switch the food. The person who tried to poison Lishu wasn't too bright in my opinion. They should know that the food gets tasted before it is given to the concubines
