We've seen him do this before like in Alabasta when he was "Mr. Prince". Now he, most assuredly, got on the Puffing Tom and is in the best position to do something or at the very least keep an eye on things until the others can catch up somehow. Also, no judgment on the TP. We've all done that multiple times in our lives lol

Also the japanese word for reindeer is tonakai is kinda close in pronunciation to tanuki, so I think it's a bit of japanese word-play humor on Oda's part.
