I have been travelling through Malaysia going on 2 weeks now. There wasn't any particular reason we decided we would pin point the start of our travels here, it was just easy to fly into and even easier to travel out of.
We knew the laws on homosexuality before we arrived, but there's only so much you can mentally prepare yourself for your romantic lover to become your platonic friend.
Same sex sexual activity is criminalised in Malaysia with a penalty of upto 20 years in jail with whipping with beatings also tolerated. So in short, it's illegal to be gay.
Alot of people don't know this but over 63% of the population are Islamic faith, so it comes to question the blurred line between politics and religion.
My anxiety levels have risen quite exponentially these past few weeks. I've personally found the places I have been not only don't accept gay people but have not been overly tourist friendly.
But none the less, here I am. Ticking a goal off my list that has been lingering for 7 years. I am here with an open mind and an open heart, experiencing a culture that is not my own, watching the lives of people that I will never know.
And hopefully I'll learn something new about myself along the way 🌿
