Live With It: Apple Watch
Added 2022-12-23 02:31:38 +0000 UTCRich Stroffolino and Sarah Lane share their thoughts on what's it like living with the Apple Watch.
Show Notes from Rich Stroffolino:
What I like:
- Have the metal band, it’s great. Love that it can adjust easy
- The whole band swapping system on Apple Watch is so much better than the regular watch world. Not even close.
- Battery life: I never charge it at night, throw it on for maybe 30-40 minutes while I’m getting dressed and starting to work on DTH, that gets me done for the day. Almost never have it dead at the end of the day, that’s good enough
- Health tracking: mostly just use it for walks, but like the tracking, the rings work, definitely got me moving more throughout the day.
- Plays nice with my Beats bluetooth buds
- Camera remote is super useful for making DTH promos
- Favorite Third-party app is Outlook, just a fully fledged email client on my wrist, I love it.
What I don’t like:
- Siri is not just bad, but the worst. Just comes on with no warning. Only ever use Siri for timers.
- Streaming over LTE: I got the LTE version so I could leave my phone at home when I’m out for a walk and mowing the lawn. YouTube Music doesn’t support streaming or downloading content, just never works. Overcast does let you download and stream stuff, but VERY glitchy and bad. Never have it connected over Bluetooth to my car.
- Works okay with Signal but obviously has much better functionality with iMessage, don’t like that I feel pushed in that direction.
- WHY DOES THE WATCH BUZZ EVERY TIME THERE IS ANY DIRECTION IN APPLE MAPS. AHHHHHHHHHHHHH
- News apps suck on it. Every time I get told to read more on my phone, I get pissed. I want this to be more of a standalone device.
- Stock watch face market doesn’t feel vibrant.
- I haven’t looked for a third-party app in months.
Comments
Sarah and Rich, thanks for this conversation! I have been an avid Apple Watch user since series 3. I primarily use it for health tracking - fitness and sleep tracking. Two things from your conversation - as far as charging in your car goes, Apple makes a short watch charging "dongle" (usb A) that I bought specifically for the car. I plug it into a USB port and since it's so short, I'm not wrestling with a long cable if I want to charge my watch. Maps - there is a setting to turn off the pulsing on your wrist when using Apple Maps. I actually shied away from using apple maps while driving because the tapping was so annoying (though in fairness, I also mute the voice prompts and just rely on the screen visuals!) Go to the WATCH app ( not what you might expect), Maps, and under turn alerts, disable with driving and driving with carPlay. I leave it on for walking and cycling. Love the show!
