SECRETS (ok really just the May update. One secret)
Added 2016-05-12 22:15:52 +0000 UTCHello you fabulous Patrons! THANK YOU as always for making DTNS possible. Give yourself a hearty handshake, hug, pat on the back, whatever you feel is appropriate. You're the best.
We've got a question FOR you and three Questions FROM you this month, so let's get to it.
Should we change the way we charge?
Patreon just added a new way to charge people who support monthly patrons like DTNS. It essentially charges a new supporter right when they sign up rather than waiting until the end of the month.
The idea is that people can’t sign up, take advantage of getting the insidery posts and business cards etc. and then cancel before they get charged.
I don’t see a whole heck of a lot of you doing this. And the one thing it would mean is that I’d have to make sure I get people into the Slack faster if they signed up at the Analyst level.
But for those of you who are already Patrons, nothing would change.
So what do you think?
OTHER QUESTIONS
Patreon also sent a survey, that I assume some of you filled out, asking what questions you’d like us to answer most. So here goes.
33% of you asked, “What’s something you really care about?”
A: Emergency response. I’ve tried to maintain first aid certification and CPR training throughout my life. I took a course in becoming a First responder and even spent a year volunteering for search and rescue in Alameda County. The people who do that sort of thing for a living have my utmost respect and thanks. And I think all of us benefit from knowning how to act when seconds count.
22% of you asked, “Can you share a sneak peek of something new?”
Sure! Right now we’re looking (once again) at the idea of a headlines-only show for folks who just need the essentials. TheaterMonkey does an edit of the show and the feed is available on the Subscribe page (http://www.dailytechnewsshow.com/subscribe/) But we’re kicking around doing something more formal.
22% of you asked “what are you working on next?” Well see above I guess, ha. Also heading to Scott Johnson’s in June to see Warcraft with him and a bunch of Frogpants fans. Then off to CreateCon with Garrett Weinzerl in July!
There you go! That was fun. Hope Patreon does it again.
Let us know what you thought!
Cheers,
Tom

We do get a small amount of pocket change from YouTube Red based on time spent viewing. It's not a huge amount but it's something.

2016-05-20 16:56:19 +0000 UTCKeep life simple and stay as you are. On a related topic (show not being ripped off) YouTube RED has just become available in Australia and I've subscribed. I tend to watch the video via the video RSS feed but does DTNS actually get anything from views via YouTube red? Is that an avenue worth looking at?

2016-05-18 05:22:08 +0000 UTCkeep the current way to charge, as long as the "exploits" are such a miniscule problem

2016-05-16 18:54:53 +0000 UTCMy personal management philosophy has always been: "Make it easy by rule, and deal with the exceptions as exceptions". Under this philosophy, you should just ignore the evil-doers who are taking advantage of the system and concentrate your energy on providing the best product for the true supporters who contribute their fair share. The alternative seems to create a lot of new work for you that has nothing to do with your reason for creating.

2016-05-16 18:18:32 +0000 UTCI wouldn't change it. People may sign up by mistake or enter an incorrect amount by mistake. Unless you can give refunds in those cases?

2016-05-16 07:41:05 +0000 UTCAgreed. Turning a once-a-month reward activity for you into a once-a-day activity seems like a lot of work. I'd live it alone unless I could automate the rewards easily.

2016-05-13 23:12:18 +0000 UTCI advise you to do whatever is easiest for you. I'm also kind of in the camp of trying to imagine a somebody being upset with the charge now option ... "Wait, I wanted to support DTNS for $5 a month, just not *right* now."

2016-05-13 21:40:03 +0000 UTCI don't see why you should change something in a way to give yourself more headaches to prevent jerks that you say don't even exist for the most part. Do what you want, I've always preferred a world where we just live and let live. If someone's that desperate for business card templates, but can't afford them, I won't hold you responsible for not triple-dead bolting the door. (-:

2016-05-13 02:42:08 +0000 UTCWhen I signed up, my expectation was that I would be charged as soon as I clicked on the button. I wound up searching to figure out that I would not be charged until the first. The only negative I could see is what happens if someone signs up on the 31st of a month? Do they get charged again the next day for the new month?

2016-05-12 23:30:16 +0000 UTCIn answer to the question about the way you charge, I think you should do whatever is easier for you. I don't think it will have much of an impact one way or another with regards to revenue.
