The old lady's clearly been in the business for a long time. She probably knows better than anyone what happens to courtesans once they're past their prime. She's likely trying to set Pairin up with someone who will take care of her. When her career's ended. I mean the alternatives are end up running a brothel like she does, marrying a loyal client who buys them out (sidenote polygamy was openly practiced in China up into to the 20th century until 1949 when the Communists came to power, so it would be common for a wealthy man to buy out a courtesan in his older age as a second wife) and not much else. The old lady's looking out for Pairin.

Even if turning down the money might not have been the smartest decision, it was a good indication of his character which Maomao could also pass on to Pairin. Also, Maomao creating misunderstandings in her explanations continues to be a thing.
