july update! + new work setup

now it's july so i have an update for you! this is what i'm working on this month.

*part of the reason i'm behind is that actually i've been having really bad hand/wrist pain lately, which is also the reason for my new work setup which you can see in the photo above! (excuse the mess... i'm still sorting things out.)

i'm trying out a tented split keyboard and a trackball mouse plus uh actually having an external monitor instead of being hunched over my laptop... i'm hoping this helps, but it's making my dev much slower currently since it hurts to type.

for july and august because i'm behind i will be focussing solely on dev for a pet shop after dark (so no jam games) but i think you'll really enjoy the game when it's done!! to be honest i'm a bit nervous since it's the first game i've personally paid in advance for translations for (thank you for your support on patreon which helped me pay for it) and i am scared that i'll have put money into the game but nobody will play it or people will play it but everyone will hate it... but i'm going to put my all into it to make it the best game i can regardless (:

hope you all have a happy july!

There's apps for the computer that show a pop-up every so often reminding/forcing you to take breaks! I use Stretchly, it's pretty hands-off and customizable

Thember

i actually haven't but this reminded me to set up a pomodoro timer so i'll stretch after every 25 minutes, so thank you!!! it's one of those things i feel like i should definitely be doing but it's hard to remember to put into my routine

yeah i'm trying to take better care of my joints now that i'm getting older and it's definitely taking a toll! thank you.

i've had a bunch of different ones recommended to me by friends so i'm going to share the names of them just in case it helps! ergodox > this is definitely an expensive and big option but another game dev friend swears by it and the keys are all customisable kinesis > more economical and more of a conventional keyboard so easier to adjust to lily58 > this is the one i'm using - much smaller keyboard so you pretty much have to use layers to switch keys but for me the small space it takes up is very nice! you will probably have to mess around quite a bit though since it's more of a diy thing! i've customised the keys to work the way i like them ergodash / ergodash mini > this is the other keyboard i was considering but ultimately went with lily58. i think these two are fairly similar in use case though

I'm glad you took the time to try a more ergonomic setup! I can't believe you made all these things in the past on your laptop screen only! Hope the new things lighten the strain on your body~

also I absolutely *love* the logo on the little display, that is so cool

oh wow that keyboard is amazing! I really need a better keyboard, I spend too much time on my computers and have definitely damaged my wrists too :(

Alan Hardman

Take care of your wrists kc!! I hope you're using one of those apps that reminds you to take breaks and stretch your hands/wrists!
