A unique probiotic for ‘protein farts’ and FODMAP intolerance.

Bacillus coagulans is a specific strain of bacteria that falls under the broad category of ‘spore formers’. Sporeforming bacteria are particularly resilient due to the endospore coating they use to protect themselves from the stomach acid. This makes them viable options for recolonizing the gut, as they are not destroyed in the stomach. You might be familiar with it, because it’s one of the spores in the Just thrive probiotic.

This isn’t another article telling you to take the Just Thrive probiotic though (which you absolutely should!) we’re going to discuss a different form of coagulans today, one that’s particularly useful for gas and bloating.

First, let’s break down some necessary distinctions.

To understand the classification of bacteria, we can use a familiar analogy involving dogs. Just as all dogs belong to the group mammals, all bacteria fall under the category monera. This broad classification sets the stage for a more detailed exploration of the various types of organisms within each category.

Within the category of mammals, we have a specific class or order: dogs. This group encompasses domesticated dogs, similar to how the family bacillaceae also includes various types of bacteria.

Next, we can think of dog breeds as analogous to bacterial genera. For example, within the broad category of dogs, we have specific breeds like the labrador and the German Shepherd. In the realm of bacteria, we have the genus of ‘spore forming’ bacillus, which includes several species, such as bacillus coagulans, bacillus subtilis and many of the others found in spore probiotics like JT and MegaSpore.

When we consider the species level, we can look at the specific breeds of dogs. A lab represents one breed, just as coagulans represents a specific species of bacteria. Each breed of dog has its unique traits and characteristics that distinguish it from others within the same category ‘dog’.

Finally, we reach the level of individual characteristics, which can be compared to bacterial strains as well. Just as a lab may have different individual traits—such as being friendly or protective—bacterial species can also have distinct strains and functional characteristics. These strains can exhibit variations in behavior much like how individual dogs can vary in personality and temperament.

This is particularly the case with bacillus coagulans MTCC 5856. Another example is the zenbiome dual product, which contains bifidobacteria longum 1719 (really good for anxiety) , and another strain called bifidobacteria longum 35624 (really good for IBS). Same kind of bacteria, different characteristics and benefits conferred to the host. This is just one example of how specific and targeted probiotics can be, especially once we get down to the species level.

The biology of lacid producing bacteria

Bacillus coagulans (our topic of discussion today) falls under the category of lactic acid producing bacteria. Lactic acid producing bacteria are believed to directly inhibit the growth of putrefactive microorganisms by competitive exclusion and the release of bacteriocins — think of these as targeted, selective antibiotic-like ‘missiles’ released from certain bacteria that only attack ‘bad bugs’.

What’s a putrefactive microorganisms? PM’s play a significant role in the decomposition of organic matter, particularly proteins, which can lead to the release of foul-smelling gases associated with putrefaction. A few common examples include bacteria from the genera clostridium (often associated with infections following antibiotics) enterobacter, and escherichia. These bacteria break down proteins into simpler compounds, producing some nasty byproducts such as amines and sulfides, which contribute to the characteristic ‘foul smelling’ gas or ‘protein farts’.

b coagulans can help mitigate the impact of these microorganisms. BC, particularly the MTCC 5856 strain, helps to directly counteract putrefactive bacteria through competitive exclusion. It also produces beneficial enzymes that can aid in digestion and help break down food more efficiently, which can prevent the buildup of undigested proteins that putrefactive bacteria typically thrive on. BC is also fantastic for supporting the immune system and adding in the digestion of nutrients.

This strain also produce organic acids and other metabolites that create an unfavorable environment for putrefactive bacteria.

Does the just thrive also do this?

The strain of BC in the Just Thrive probiotic is called SC-208. And while it has many similar benefits, the MTCC 5856 strain (sometimes reffered to as LactoSpore) is slightly more targeted for improving gas and bloating. Clinically, it’s well studied

If you’re someone that suffers with a lot of gas and bloating — particularly on the fungal protocol — or have FODMAP intolerances — the addition of the MTCC strain may be useful for you. Another added benefit is that LactoSpore is particularly effective at inhibiting the growth of candida by creating an unfavorable gut micro-environment. This makes it an exellent addition to the fungal protocol.

Dosing —You can purchase an isolated, high-dose of the MTCC strain (aka lactospore) directly and take it IN ADDITION to your Just Thrive probiotic. These can be taken together at the same time, with or without food.

Another collateral benefit of virtually all BC strains is that they do a great job at cleaning up the gut and lowering levels of opportunistic pathogens like candida and SIBO causing bacteria.

Because the brand included bellow has 60 servings at 5 billion colony forming units per serving (as a relatively affordable price I might add), I often have clients with really bad gas and bloating mega-dose this at around 2-3 capsules daily for a month to get symptoms under control. It is important to keep in mind that paradoxical reactions can occur, especially in the beginning. Meaning a transient INCREASE in gas and bloating. For this reason, I’d start with half a capsule or 1 capsule initially. See how you feel for a few days, then gradually increase to 2-3 capsules slowly. Add a capsule or half a capsule every day or every other day depending on your tolerance. Dosing at around 1 capsule daily (or even half a capsule) is also very cost effective, and this is the dosage often used in clinical trials.

You can also find the Just Thrive probiotic bellow, with a 10% discount code using GRANTFOWLER15 at check out. You need to also be on a good broad spectrum spore while using the isolated strain as well. This is NOT a replacement for the Just Thrive. If addition to magnesium and B-vitamins, this is one supplement I think most people should stay on year round
