Quick thoughts after the Yankees sign Marcus Stroman (and Luke Weaver)

The Yankees added 40% of a rotation in the span of a few hours Thursday. The big move: Marcus Stroman. The two sides have agreed to a two-year contract worth $37M with an $18M option according to all the trustworthy reporters. As I understand the option terms, Stroman gets a player option if he throws 140 innings in 2025. It’s not a club option and it doesn’t automatically vest. He has the choice.

I said just about everything I had to say about Stroman the other day. He’s a significant upgrade to the rotation and his ground ball ways will fit well in Yankee Stadium and with the infield defense, particularly when Oswald Peraza plays. Stroman’s had injuries the last two years though, and there are subtle signs of decline under the hood. That’s how it goes with soon-to-be 33-year-olds with a lot of miles on their arm. You can find red flags with all of ‘em.

Stroman may not be the most fun player to root for, but I prefer two years (plus maybe a third) of him to long-term deals for Blake Snell and Jordan Montgomery. I don’t love love any of them, so the short-term option is the best option. This contract is more than reasonable too. It’s $750,000 a year less than the Red Sox gave Lucas Giolito, who allowed 41 home runs in 2023. Yeah.

(Earlier in the day Jon Heyman reported the Yankees made Snell an “opening offer,” though they were still far apart. Bob Nightengale says the Yankees pivoted to Stroman when they had trouble bridging the gap with Snell because they didn’t want to wait any longer to add pitching. Nightengale also says Stroman and Brian Cashman met face-to-face at some point, and presumably hashed out their differences.)

As for Weaver, he received a one-year contract worth $2M. There’s a club option worth $2.5M, and bonuses tied to innings can push the total value to $8.25M. Last week I wondered whether the Yankees would try to re-sign Weaver to a minor league deal for depth. This isn't a minor league deal, but it’s cheap enough that it won’t stand in the way of anything else. I mean, if Weaver’s $2M salary handcuffs the Yankees, they’re screwed anyway.

The 30-year-old Weaver had a dreadful season last year, throwing 123.2 innings with a 6.40 ERA (5.61 FIP) for the Reds, Mariners, and Yankees. The Yankees claimed him off waivers when they were desperate for arms in September, and he gave them one good start and two so-so starts. My lasting memory of Weaver’s 2023 will be one of the more absurd look-alikes the YES Network has ever put on my screen:

What are we doing here lol? They look nothing alike! Props to Meredith Marakovits for calling out that nonsense (video). That is the 2023 Yankees of look-alikes.

I mentioned this last week: Weaver brought back his cutter in the middle of last season and the Yankees had him throwing a slightly slower version. They seem to believe there’s something there. Enough to gamble $2M and a 40-man roster spot on it. If Weaver opens the season in the rotation, that ain’t great. As a swingman in the bullpen (essentially what Domingo Germán was supposed to be last year)? Sure, whatever. Figure the rotation lines up like this:

1. RHP Gerrit Cole
2. LHP Carlos Rodón
3. RHP Marcus Stroman
4. LHP Nestor Cortes
5. RHP Clarke Schmidt
6. RHP Luke Weaver
7. RHP Clayton Beeter

That looks much better than it did 24 hours ago. I would be surprised if the Yankees shelled out another big contract for Montgomery or Snell. Will they continue to make a push for Dylan Cease though? They should and I hope so. For what it’s worth, Heyman says the White Sox want Spencer Jones in a Cease trade. Not an unreasonable ask, I don’t think.

The Yankees will need to open two 40-man roster spots for Stroman and Weaver once they pass their physicals. Jasson Domínguez can’t go on the 60-day injured list until Spring Training opens next month, so some combination of Jeter Downs, Oscar Gonzalez, and Bubba Thompson figures to go. Maybe Ben Rortvedt since he seems to be out of options? I bet the Yankees could trade him for something given the lack of decent catching around the league.

I really wish the Yankees had tried harder for Yoshinobu Yamamoto, but what’s done is done. Stroman on a short-term deal is preferable to a long-term deal that locks up Montgomery or Snell deep into their 30s. And, let’s be real, it would not be a huge surprise if Stroman outpitches those two from 2024-25. Weaver as a cheap swingman is fine too. Maybe Matt Blake can work his magic with that cutter.

“He’s definitely got an interesting mix,” Blake said during a YES Network interview last year (video). “He’s kinda evolved over the last few years. He’s kind of worked on the cutter lately, and the changeup’s always been really good.”

“Hello moto. It’s Juan Soto.”

Kevin Carter

Speaking of which, what will Sterling use for his Soto home run call?

DocBob

He won’t be our #5. If he were, we’d be good. More like our #2 or 3. (When he’s not throwing fits or injured himself or both.) Whole season riding on Cortez or Rodon, which is scary. They should be competing for #4 and 5. Nestor hasn’t started since I believe the first half (but check me) and rotator cuff not easy to come back from, had horrible command last year and it’s a surgery where pitchers often lose their mechanics (there’s a piece on this in Pinstripe Alley). Rodón might be ok, might not but his last start of the season against KC where he gave up 8 runs without getting an out is hard to forget. They should have added more quantity if not quality (Giolito too, or look at what KC did, adding Seth Lugo and Michael Wacha). And the toxicity of the new players is foreboding. Meanwhile they gave up the farm to get Soto in a massive overpay. Says to me they don’t know what they’re doing. Mike wrote, If they got Soto for one year this has to mean they’re playing to go all the way. Which means, not have a rebuild transition year unlike our neighbors across the river. I keep seeing headlines on the Mets having a youth plan, a rotation plan. This team has no plan except mollify fans and make as much money as possible. They’re not set up to win the division which requires winning 100 games. So their plan to make the playoffs out of the gate is via a wild card. Where are the wins or innings pitched coming from to improve upon 82-80? Healthy Rodon and Stromon? What is the likelihood of 4 starters making 32 starts? Too much of a “high variable” rotation, yes. So if Storman pitches 32 starts which is iffy, that’s something. Schmidt is a five inning starter, at best. Soto adds wins with his bat. But who is in the playoff rotation? It won’t matter bc there might not be one.

I've been working on rotation nicknames and landed on "Cole and the roll (of the dice)". Mike, feel free to use that one for no cost.

John

The Yankees aren't going anywhere unless Cortes and Rodon bounceback in a real way. That being said, Stroman being their only "big" pitching acquisition isn't great, but give that it is a short term deal, it's a lesser of two evils I suppose. They still have time to address pitching during the season.

Isn’t $297M the “Cohen tax line” that thou, I mean Hal, shall not pass?

MikeD

Same way as Ohtani actually. He’s young enough that he’ll be tied to the bonus pool as opposed to true free agency.

Bernard Ozarowski

I don’t like him, he’s good pitcher when/if healthy and we’re better than yesterday, whatever. Let’s the games start, ball don’t lie.

Max P.

The rotation feels too 'high variance' for a team hoping to contend. The last few years have been high variance rosters, and they have resulted in a lot of disappointment. I still think it's better than Snell or Monty on a huge contract. As for wishing "the Yankees had tried harder for Yoshinobu Yamamoto", I don't think they could have beaten the Dodgers - seems like he just used a lot of teams as leverage to get an insanely good deal from the team he always wanted to sign with.

DZB

I suspect Stroman will give us some highlights along an emotional roller coaster ride. They’ll be times the fans love him, but they’ll also be happy to see him leave after 2025. Overall, he strengthens the rotation as he consistently has above average seasons.

MikeD

Unfortunately I fear it will be exactly the same way: with Sasaki going to the Dodgers. But all signs point to yes on him getting posted. It's not a guarantee, but he requested it this offseason, which means it will probably happen next offseason.

Michael Nelson

If we are, it's not because of Stroman. If he's our #5, that's a good rotation. But that requires Rodon being a #2 and Nestor being a #3.

Michael Nelson

On paper that’s a decent rotation. Depth still scares me given all the question marks. Maybe they’ll add at the trade deadline if things go south

Dan G

I'm very happy with this but we really need one more pitcher (at least) and I'm not confident we'll get one. Feels like another half-measure. But in a vacuum, this is a good deal, and I can (and will) root for Stroman. I'll also kinda be holding my breath here, because he seems to have a very mercurial relationship with just about everyone.

Michael Nelson

Thanks for the response!

Justin Sanchez

Don't really care about his off field stuff for the most part. Not sure how great a fit Stroman's stuff is in the AL East at this point but they needed someone and I prefer a shorter deal here than a longer deal for Monty.

Mackenzie Kraemer

You should see someone to unpack all that rage about stuff that hasn’t happened yet. Jeez dude.

Zack

Payroll is about $297M. The tax bill on that would be roughly $39M.

Michael Axisa

Any chance you can calculate the projected tax bill as it stands?

Justin Sanchez

We’re f***d

Leonard Kohen

Will roki be posted next yr the same way as Yamamoto?

vincent gagliano

First Verdugo and now Stroman, who is without question the biggest douchebag in the sport. How can anyone possibly think this won't end badly? He's been an enormous pain in the ass everywhere he's ever been. That's going to change as he starts to break down? I put the over under at 7 starts before he's booed off the mound holding his hip and spends the following week telling us all on twitter how racist we are. Then he'll skip half the season resting up for his option vesting year in '25 (like when he took 2020 off out of pretend fear of COVID). Then he'll spend all of '25 stomping his feet and flaming the team when they try to keep him from getting his 140 innings. That, too, will be racism. Why not just go full dark side and sign Bauer, Donaldson, German and Chapman while we're at it. The one ray of hope is that this might finally be the fiasco that gets Cashman fired.

pkmuldy

Beside yankees shouldn't sign home run prone starters, ground ball starters leads to less runs and more double plays

ramez hanna

Decent starter when healthy,1/2of starters in mlb hits the injured list at least once a year

ramez hanna

Feeling a lot better now. I was just getting worried they were literally going to do nothing, so this is a big step up.
