Weekly Bonus #28

Hi Patrons! Here is the weekly bonus number 28.

I'm deep into the production of future episode 13; a complex and long episode of seven pages with Pepper, Shichimi and Coriander. The episode has the feel of a fantasy quest, and it's a pleasure to draw it, but handling all the action scenes and dialogs with three characters is something really challenging and complex. I'm still in the process of 'penciling' all characters ( the background will be painted , without outlines ). I decided to do it 100% digital this time with Krita and my graphic-pen-tablet. The bonus picture details why I'm switching back to digital drawing ; and what new technology/setup makes me happy with it again.

Many thanks for your support,

-David

( Note: Thanks a lot for all your private messages or email after the shocking events in Paris last week, I'm fine and family is safe. )

Thank you Stephan! True, I had a little down last week-end and on the start of week because of this events. My wife has a week of work in Paris next-week and I decided to go with her. I'll keep working on episode 13 with my laptop at the hotel room in Paris, probably an impossible mission to finish it ; but for the moment I'm trying to keep positive about it and give it a try. Thanks a lot for your feedback about last episode. Have a good end of week!

Hey :-) I hope you'll enjoy to discover Krita and the community around it. Do not hesitate to ping me if you have questions about it.

Hi :) I also have tendency to draw with countless little lines and many random one too , just to keep in rythm in the 'drawing quick dance'. ; I think this type of gesture is good to 'guess' shapes and correct them with a dominant stroke ( making a lot of guess thin and low opacity lines, then when the guess is locked to the good one finishing the gesture with a single, more pressured, more thick stroke ). It has a charm, it's quick, and quickly rewarding , but in my case it creates too much randomness and dirt to clean compare to what I have in mind. So much I usually need to create a new layer above to clean-up the drawing and remove later the sketch/gesture. On this episode I'm trying to slow-down, focus and draw directly small line with this constructive approach; sometime they are shacky, weak and hesitant, but they have (almost) the right path to outline the volume as I want, in a single pass. Then I draw over this line to adjust thickness or give more energy to it and add details, texturing. At the moment, I'm not winning any extra time with this discipline. But I also draw this episode as if it were on a A3 sheet of paper, more details than previous on A4. Maybe speed will happen on long term if I keep this practise and eventually master this direct approach.

Hey :) Good idea! Here is my 'beta' version but very close to final: https://gist.github.com/Deevad/51820854ffd5ea5cd883 It's already tested on my workstation and my laptop with two different tablets and result are satisfying. I hope it will work on other setup as well:

So in precision mode monitor maps to the tablet instead of the tablet mapping to the monitor? I would like to try that on my Tablet. Is there any way you could share your xsetwacom script as a gist on GitHub?

Hello David, I'm reliefed to to hear that you and your family are fine! The latest events where really shocking. I was a little busy so a bit late: I also want to say that ep. 12 was really cool with all the bottles and the black hole and the expressions of the faces! ( i would never want to see pepper angry in real life :-) ) . Your storywork and storytelling is really amazing. There is always a little surprise and thats really cool. And looking at this weekly bonus I can't wait to see the finished comic, I really like this fantasy style!

Thank you for sharing your workflow. I think I need to give Krita a look. :)

Thanks for process steps :). i enjoy reading these. some thing that i am unable to do in traditional setup is countless doodle lines while drawing a unintentional habbit I got after working in only digital for long time.
