Talents and Livestreams | Patreon Weekly #74
Added 2020-11-02 16:21:12 +0000 UTCHey Patrons!
Firstly, there’s a new poll out! Since we’ve now hit the $250 milestone, and are doing pretty well on progress towards $400, I need to start committing to what Patreon expansions will happen at $400 and beyond. So, I’ve decided to put some options to a vote!
For this weekly, I’m going to talk a bit about work I’ve done on talents this week, and then give some info on Q&A livestreams. There’s a poll at the end of this post for stream times, so make sure to vote in it!
Food Talent Changes and Additions
As mentioned in my recent Shattered Pixel Blog Post, I’m looking to make a few changes to talents at tier 1, primarily to remove some of the worst offenders when it comes to talents scaling into the lategame. I think a great place to start here is with food-based talents, so I’m making some significant design changes there:
- The Warrior isn’t getting any major changes to his T1 food talent (though I may nerf it slightly). For T2, I’m considering letting the warrior get a temporary +1 to strength when he eats, so that he might be able to use higher tier gear for brief periods of time.
- The Mage’s T1 food talent is being moved to Tier 2. I’m doing this partly as wand charge scales well, and also to give the mage a T1 talent that helps him out a bit more in the short term. At T1 the mage will get a talent that gives him bonus damage on his next few wand zaps whenever he eats. This boost in killing power should serve the mage better in the early stages of the game.
- For the rogue, I’m keeping the theme of bonus satiety at T1, but implementing it in a way that doesn’t scale. The rogue will be able to find a set number of small ration caches in the dungeon as he explores in the earlygame. At T2, I’m considering giving the rogue artifact recharging, though probably with some limits when combined with the horn of plenty.
- The Huntress’ T1 food talent is also being moved to T2, as it scales well into the lategame. In compensation, I’m considering giving the huntress a T1 talent that lets her find food in the environment as well, but tieing the theme into nature instead of food caches. She would be able to find a set number of berries in high grass in the early game, which would provide satiety and another small bonus I haven’t decided on yet.
Q&A Livestreams!
Now that we’ve passed $250, it’s time to get those livestreams started! Here is my rough plan for how the Q&A livestreams will be structured:
- The stream will be around the middle of every month, probably on a Friday.
- The stream will be announced on the Weekly at the start of the week of the stream. Patrons can ask questions on that weekly or on Discord.
- The stream will be hosted on Youtube and will be accessible only via link. $5+ patrons will get a link to the livestream shortly before it starts, all patrons will get a link to the VOD in the next weekly.
- Streams will last at least 1 or 2 hours, and I will take questions from chat while they run. If all questions get answered and there’s still time, I can do something else that chat wants, such as play a game or do some coding.
- There will be no webcam to start, but I will probably add one once we’re a few streams in.
I haven’t yet decided what would be the best time to start the stream, so I’ve added a poll to this weekly. Please vote for every time slot that works for you! All times are in EST, so make sure to convert them to your timezone. If none of these times work for you, or Friday in general doesn’t, let me know in the comments.

Come on, this is an excellent time to give huntress ADRENALINE from eating :) :) There's no reason to beat around the bush, this is what huntress deserves. Even if it's only given at low hp, it would be really damn sweet. Would make up for the incoming sniper nerf courtesy of the removal of invigorating meal.... What am I supposed to invest in now for t1? Intuition and Follow Up strike?? I'm not interested in more grass interactions. I agree with Pett, bonus strength from eating does not sound appealing to me, though my ideal solution would be a second hearty meal in t2 so I can get 7/9 hp from food if I invest in both t1 and t2 hearty meal. Rogue has plenty of invisible interactions, I don't see why we have to draw the line at talents. We have bonus secret rooms, bonus evasion from freerunner momentum, the rate of recharge from cloak, and the satiety perk. I don't really see how "bonus food appears" is going to be much more visible, but I suppose that's a different argument.....

Just giving him bonus damage isn't nearly as interactive as more strength though. Regarding the extra food talents, they would be phrased to the player something like this: "The rogue is aware of some caches of small rations hidden in the early parts of the dungeon. He is able to find 4|6 of them in total." or "The huntress can find small berries in grass located in the earlier parts of the dungeon. She can find 6|9 of these berries in total." It would be possibly for the player to find these items in the lategame if they purposefully wait until spending their talent points, but in the vast majority of cases these drops would be consistent and would dry up by the middle or end of the prison. For the rogue in particular, I also like that I'm moving away from a less visible talent that only affect numbers. A talent that reduces starving damage would be even harder to notice than the current one.

2020-11-02 18:09:07 +0000 UTCRegarding talents: * I am not a big fan of being able to equip better gear only for a short while and then having to take it off. You could achieve the same effect by boosting Hero's damage and defense without the player having to put on better gear (if he has it in the first place) and take it off after a few turns. * The rogue's eating talent could recharge just cloak and not other artifacts. * The talents that give the Hero a fixed amount of extra food sound weird. I get that the Hero might gain ability to find berries/hidden food stashes, but how do you explain suddenly loosing that ability after (s)he finds the set amount (and then possibly gaining and losing it again after investing a second point to that talent). Instead: ** Rogue could have a chance to reduce starving damage taken by 1. This would not scale well as starving damage gets larger with level. ** Huntress could possibly get barkskin on eating.
