Utility vs turning down volume

Interesting question. Ableton is 32 bit float so you can simply just turn down volume with utility if you clipped via EQ8 or other plugins. Distortion plugins and compression etc won't work this way. Generally I would suggest going via the checking if any is clipping to being with and simply turning it down. I would also suggest always setting volume via the kick. That is almost always the loudest track in a mix. If you set that up at -7 ish.. And always work like that then eventually mixing will get easier and easier.

Here is a 45 minute video on why https://youtu.be/_CxSnpbYnhM. I have fallen asleep to this too many times.

Utility vs turning down volume

Comments

Definitely for another video. I start at -7 ish and the feeling of groove for everything else. Leads/vocals get the Freddy mercury treatment

Ok one more: do you have general guidelines like this for other groups? For example drums group hit around -7, synths -8, bass -9, etc? Maybe for another video ha

Master at -7 ish

Follow up Q: you set the kick at -7 going into your drum bus, or do you mean it’s going to the master at -7?
