I know, it takes a lot of effort and suspension of disbelief to understand they did not really think this through, and they have no elegant way to back down. Big picture, to me Russia has lost the war already, but I have given up screaming "stop making it worse". They just keep doubling down, and in the process they are doing so much damage to Ukraine. To me the "annexations" were the signal that they are in some kind of parallel universe.
