Where do you get your b roll footage from? Like all the stock type of footage you use.

Cody Putman

Hello! What kind of watches do you wear?

Sergey Yagodkin

I'm so glad you replied! I sent it through Patreon's DM on Nov 24th! Hope you find the message :)

Joseph Jae Hyuk Lee

wow this is incredible and THANK YOU! i'll take a look!

Johnny Harris

that is so cool to hear!

Johnny Harris

Totally would be up for a YT channel. The Uncharted soundtrack is my deep work playlist. Also fun because I hear those songs in so many other videos now

Ryan Shields

That’s awesome! Anyway that makes it easy to listen is always welcome. I have lots a friends that use YouTube for music.

Cody Putman

We're going to this year, we are also thinking about doing a youtube channel so people can listen while they work - would love your thoughts!

I actually found it on your sound cloud ten minutes after posting my comment. I joined sound cloud just for it so no idea how it works. I can’t figure out how to download it. You and Tom Fox should consider putting your stuff on Spotify! I was chilling at work the other day to Tom fox’s music.

Cody Putman

Hi! I served as an English interpreter at the Ministry of National Defense in South Korea and translated numerous official documents regarding North Korea. I truly loved the video “Why North Korea’s Neighbors Aren’t That Scared of Them”, and believe that it's also a wonderful video for the Koreans to watch. However, even though I want to share the video, the auto-translation is so bad making it impossible to understand. As a result, I spent 3 weeks making a Korean subtitle for the video! I sent a DM with a Google Drive link to the final subtitle file. I hope you check it out someday :)

Joseph Jae Hyuk Lee

drop a link to your channel!

Johnny Harris

i'll let tom know and hopefully we can get it for you!

Johnny Harris

Is there a way to get your sound track from your video “China is erasing its border with Hong Kong”? I believe it’s titled old streets and it’s the end credits song. Been wanting that one since the video first came out.

Cody Putman

What’s the best advice you’ve received, both in regards to video making and in general

Cody Putman

Hey Johnny, your amazingly told stories are a product of several layers of high quality production. I'm interested in the very important and often overlooked aspect of sound design in your videos. I know that you now work with a composer, who does all the amazing work, but before you had that possibility, what resources did you use to find appropriate tracks for your work and how did you approach implementing them into the videos?

Kajetan Przybecki

What's your team look like to output such ornate videos at such high frequency - and what's the production timeline on an average video (2 months per video)? as detailed as possible would be helpful - e.g. # of editors and animators working on Johnny Harris videos at any given time; number of editors and animators on any individual video - e.g. do you have multiple editors divide and conquer on a single video? what's your relationships to these specialists who work on your videos - full time vs. contractors? do you have a full time person just managing those contractors/editors/animators or is this still something Johnny and/or Iz do directly? (for context run a smaller channel - 115K - and want to figure out how to scale over time to where your team is at)

Marc Koenig

Hey Johnny, As a fan of your content and see the way you discovered many untold stories, things that certain country doesn't want people to know and exposed. You have been putting yourself in the spotlight trying to get all this information. Especially since you're not an anonymous writer, or producer who work behind the scene or at a newspaper company, you're a public icon on the internet. Have you ever felt threatened by the way you have been doing stuff? There are many conspiracies and hidden truth that most closed-minded/extreme government doesn't want people to know, yet you step into it and put light onto things for the worldwide population to see the darker side of a certain topic.

Lee Jun Zheng

After watching the Qatar video, i was curious if you had any plans on making a video regarding NEOM, the sheer scale of human rights violations and blood money involved in that project blows my mind.

Shadow Shinigami

Hey Johnny! This might be a bit of a long worded question. I am a studying Journalism in college and I have been watching your videos since high school. During a conversation

johnZ

What are some stories that fascinate you but you can't tell because they aren't fit to share in video form? What are lessons you've learned from your style of storytelling that could be applied to local journalism? If you could erase Mercator from our timeline, would you, and what projection would you replace it with?

Renzo Downey

Hey Johnny! I'm a political reporter living in Florida. I've watched your videos for years. They're fascinating and exactly what I aspire to do with my reporting. Back when you were launching Vox Borders, I remember filling out a Google Form suggesting borders to research. I recall suggesting Haiti/the DR, the latter of which is my mother's homeland. I know it wasn't my doing, but I felt honored when you released it as the inaugural Borders episode. It's still my go-to video to share with friends when trying to explain the dynamics of Hispanola. I'll put my questions for you in another comment so it's easier to screengrab for the Q&A and you don't have to read all my gushing to your viewers... lol. Best, Renzo

Renzo Downey

Hey Johnny, I’m a Naval Officer living in Va. and graduate of the United States Naval Academy with a degree in Political Science. My love for geopolitics is what initially drew me to your channel and your quality/professionalism is what got me to stay. I’ve been creating YouTube videos for the past couple of years and have monetized my channel. I would love to come to DC and offer any services you all may need for free. My goal would be to: 1. Help you and the team out in anyway possible. 2. Learn the thought process/operation behind you and your team’s channel. Thank you for your time.

Cedric Williams II

Good Q!

KJ

1. What's your production timeline? (time estimatees and deadlines for each part of the process: research, scriptwriting, script-editing & fact-checking, video editing, motion graphics, video reviews, sound design, etc) 2. What's your process for managing the production process for multiple videos at once? (do you have specific groups of teams, or are the teams ad hoc?) 3. How many videos in advance do you normally have: a) planned b) in production c) already finished?

Paul Carleton

I’m curious to know more about your writing process: how do you go from idea to script? How do you come up with new ideas and decide whether they are fit for a video or not?

Maxime Lenormand

I'm making the script for the video application for VOX. I have some questions 1. What do they expect from a video editor when hiring? 2. Are they an open company that will consider hiring someone who impresses by submitting a video application? 3. What does the process of video editing look like at vox? Are you reading the script and editing it at the same time? How can you collaborate with an animator? 4. Why all talented producer quit the job and make their own youtube channel?

Anh Phan

Cliché but what does success look or feel like for you?

Suraj Devaraj

Plagiarism vs Inspiration At lot infotainment creators (me included) copy your style or parts of your style. Does this bother you or is imitation the best form of flattery? And did you have trouble with disclosing your process (in a lot of detail) to an audience knowing there’ll be copycats?

Suraj Devaraj

It's coming soon. We will generally post 1 track per month.

Johnny Harris

We're planning to post the link to the livestream on November 30, so keep your eyes peeled for that. If anything goes wrong with that link we will do our best to contact everyone even if you're no longer a patron.

Johnny Harris

I have a few questions: * Which tools are you using throughout your process? From shooting content to sourcing and fact checking, whether it's hardware or software, it's all interesting to know. * What's the entry point to the OSINT community? Where can one lurk to keep a finger on the pulse? * How do you go about establishing, vetting and maintaining access to sources and privileged information? * What are your go-to fact checking sources? * Have you considered setting up a Discord community for patrons and other contributors?

Torkild Dyvik Olsen

How long does it usually take for you to research and film your videos? YouTube is filled with content creators who post sometimes several videos a day, but often I feel at the sacrifice of truly engaging and impactful stories. I know it must take a TON of work, but it has been so refreshing as a viewer to see content like yours that tells a deep and well-planned story.

Sarah Massey

In your videos, you use a ton of photos, artwork, maps, quotes, and news footage. As a beginning filmmaker who is interested in telling stories of my own in a similar style, I was curious: does this type of content fall under the Fair Use category, or do you have to purchase or request rights to these images, quotes, footage, etc?

Sarah Massey

Hey Johnny! I'm really curious what kind of advice you'd give to a new youtuber that wants to get into making the types of videos you do? I'm a long time fan of yours and you've really inspired me to start making my own videos! Keep up the good work 😁

Maj Čučkov

Very basic question but im still interested, whats your favourite video you’ve done?

Philip Bordon

Would you ever do a deep dive into Vikings and all their wars with christians?

Philip Bordon

Has it ever happened to you to start a research and after a few weeks/months realize that it wasn't going nowhere or that it wasn't consistent enough so you decided not to publish it? If so, can you tell us about it? Also, after the telescope and astrophotography video, have you ever photographed the sky again? Keep up the good work!

Ana Prieto

Where is the Tom Fox music Jonhnny?

Rui Junior

how do you deal with burnout? especially when you have a team, it must be harder. and have u ever had a hard time feeling motivated and how did you come back from that?

Dylan Boynukalın

What productivity habits do you use? I’ve heard you talk about the power of work day limits. Any other rules you lean on? (I.e. Do you have a daily writing quota? Time blocking and pomodoros?)

Ryan Shields

I loved Iz's videos, and I miss them so much. I would like to know her role in your channel since I noticed that she is the executive producer on most videos, if not all, later. I will like to know what is the executive producer role. Hi Iz!!

Astrid Thompson

What’s the highest resolution map of the earth that you have in your possession? I am referring to a file.

Tlaloc Lopez-Watermann

I feel like it is right down your ally.

Tlaloc Lopez-Watermann

Have you read the book “Longitude: The True Story of a Lone Genius Who Solved the Greatest Scientific Problem of His Time”

Tlaloc Lopez-Watermann

Would enjoy more comparative research like the Bermuda Triangle piece. Would also enjoy discussing your research algorithms. They apply across disciplines! Thank you for all you do

Scott Gilgallon, EQ-ALL CEO (we are both under construction)

Where does the research start, and how does it progress? So you have an idea or topic - say how bikes changed the way people travel (just throwing something out there) - where do you/the team go next? Find the most credible sources and "chain smoke" the bibliography until a story reveals itself? And then, how is the research organized? It looks like in the BTS vlog, you add notes from all the sources into the script and link the source. Do you all just jot anything down that's interesting during the research phase and then pick and choose what makes it?

Dalton Mabery

is this livestream only for those who will be the member of December month? or if someone being member till end of November he/she can participate?

Sayedul Abrar

How closely linked are successful long form content and community building? Once your long form became successful, did the community begin to organically form? Or were there key moves you made to help it along?

Frank Smith

I’ll be interested to know how you deliver the script to video recording. Line by line, teleprompter, remember the lines or else.

Stan Sabev

What "training" from your time at Vox (and work with NYT) has continued to feel like a superpower compared to those who never got that kind of experience? The scripting? The production pace and coordination? Nothing at all?
