(Timeline Tuesday #209)
Cactorics are a species whose biology lies somewhere between plant and animal, constructed from cells that are not native to our reality. They are dark green and spherical, and their bodies are covered in spines which are incredibly similar to the cacti of our timeline. The only other visible feature is a singular eye that rests within the creature’s body, staring out at the world with its yellowish iris.
This species needs hot, dry weather to survive, but in the deserts of this reality they will often thrive. Once these creatures establish themselves you can find them rolling across the open plains in large packs, hunting for food. Cactorics are carnivores, their diet consisting of any small creatures they can successfully catch, typically rodents or rabbits. Cactorics hunt their prey by rolling quickly across the ground towards them, then impaling their prey upon one or more of their incredibly sharp spines. These spines are coated with a natural paralytic agent, causing their target to pass out and experience a painless death as the cactoric sucks them dry through holes at the tip of their spikes.
Cactorics are known for their incredible, savory taste. While catching this species is quite difficult, those who manage are treated to an incredible, soup-like filling. The creatures can be cracked open to reveal a hollow, wet filling. These halves are then heated over a fire, boiling the contents and resulting in a pair of delicious, well-balanced meals.
