JARLARK - TIMELINE #2087911

(Timeline Tuesday #131)

Jarlarks are a species of small, semi-transparent humanoids standing anywhere between two to ten inches in height. They come in a variety of shapes, but the most common forms are cylindrical and cubic. Still, there are several features that remain consistent across the species. Jarlarks have two arms and two legs, each sporting three fingers or toes and featuring a pale blue hue. They have no mouth, nose or ears, but have a pair of orange eyes set against the front of their bodies. The top of a jarlark is always white.

Jarlarks bear a striking resemblance to the common jars of our timeline, small clear receptacles within which someone might place objects or ingredients. In this fashion, jarlarks are perfectly capable of hosting any number of things, filling their bodies after removing the top of their head, then resealing for safe keeping. This process is how jarlarks consume food and gain sustenance. Any edible material placed within this creature will slowly be consumed by the jarlark, although this process takes a very long time. If oats or rice are placed within, approximately two grains a month will be absorbed to keep a jarlark happy and healthy.

In the wild these creatures will gather organic matter and place it within themselves, but currently most of these creatures have been semi-domesticated. High end kitchens make great use of jarlarks, keeping a whole collection of the creatures and allowing them space within the pantry. While the creatures do consume a small about of the food within them, they make up for this by working with a chef to provide speedy access to ingredients. Instead of hunting through a shelf of spices, a human only has to verbally call out their ingredient list to bring the jarlarks running. These creatures are happy to line up in a precise order as needed, then return to the cabinet, so long as they are feed and taken care of.

Because they do not have ears, it is still not entirely understood how jarlarks comprehend and react to verbal commands.
