Shaowls are a unique species of bird from a distant timeline. Unlike birds from this reality, they are not covered in feathers, but instead sport a coat of ultra-thin metallic scales that shimmer in the light. A shaowl can change the color of these scales at will, shifting them to blend with their surroundings, or to create a fearsome display. While this creature usually tries its best to stay hidden by sporting neutral tones, it will sometimes erupt in a rainbow of colors as a method of scaring away predators.
These creatures have the same size and shape of our timeline’s natural owls, featuring large eyes and a head capable of incredible rotation. Shaowl feet sport large claws, which they use to tightly grip the branches below them. The most unique feature of a shaowl is that their scales are capable of detaching from the creature’s central body, swirling around a shaowl in a shimmering tornado of light and color.
It is unknown how the shards of this creature are capable of floating and drifting through the air, as no psychic energy has ever been recorded during this phenomenon. Some believe shaowls possess some kind of magnetic quality, which they can use to manipulate their shards. Bursts of magnetism have been recorded near shaowls and shaowl nests.
Shaowls are incredibly dangerous creatures. While they do not hunt humans, they will not hesitate to defend themselves. The shards of a shaowl are incredibly sharp, capable of deeply wounding or killing any target these creatures deem a threat. Shaowls will often create a tornado of shards around themselves, but they’ve also been known to hurl shards through the air at a target.
