(Timeline Tuesday #97)
Coffincrawlers are large scavengers from a nearby timeline who—despite their frightening appearance—are relatively harmless and docile creatures. These animals are approximately the size and shape of a wooden coffin, growing throughout their lifecycle until they reach the approximate dimensions of a full grown human. They are always a solid color, their hue ranging between shades of black, white, grey, tan and brown.
This species has six eyes, which glint yellow in the darkness. They have a small mouth lined with sharp teeth, and a set of six long, muscular tentacles which sprout from the bottom of their oblong form. Coffincrawlers also sport a distinct marking on the back of their head, a grey growth that forms in the shape of a human skull.
When hiding, coffincrawlers close their eyes and mouth, tucking their tentacles underneath their bodies and disguising themselves as a normal coffin. They use this method to stay undetected.
As meat-eating scavengers, coffincrawlers find meals by building their homes in places where dead bodies are common (usually cemeteries or morgues), and while the species is not dangerous, they are considered a pest due to the disrespect humans feel when this creature consumes the remains of a loved one. Because of this, coffincrawlers have a very mixed reputation on this timeline.
It is rare for coffincrawlers to be domesticated, but not unheard of. These creatures are a favorite of the goth community, who care for their coffincrawler pets with regular feedings of raw meat from a grocery store.
